Best filter for ambient

What do you ambient folk like using as a filter? There are so many different options but I want to only have one.

  • Download MixBox. Lots of filter options to choose from and then you can find your favorite.

If you have Hilda, remember you can use it as an fx, and the filters are lovely!

The JAF filters are excellent too and you get a lot of types, like really a lot, with built in modulation, saturation etc

  • I’d suggest something with lots of automation parameters. Slowly evolving ambient music could make good use of that automation.

  • True... Fab Filter Volcano is a good choice in that regard > @michael_m said:

  • Filterjam is worth a look (free!), and can be automated with LFOs. Or there are loads of options in MiRack.

  • Wow. Thx for all the ideas. I do have MI Rack so maybe I should start there.

  • Volcano is my personal favorite but yes there are tons out there. MiRack, iVCS3 is great as an effect, Bleass, TB DualFilter, etc.

I actually just picked up Volcano and also Saturn! Looking forward to explore.

  • How about Flux the free version and Pro

  • Seems like you have miRack, and you can insert that as an effect in AUM. It doesn't require any know-how of clocks and MIDI and such to use miRack as a simple effects rack (the reverbs in miRack are great choices for Ambient, especially the Plateau reverb). BUT here's the cool thing - if you know how to use clocks to drive LFOs and know how to hook all those up, you can have a modular effects rack driven by many LFOs, including all the filters within miRack.

I've been learning to use miRack and modular synthesis in general this past week. I haven't released any new generative Ambient yet, but my plan is to start small and use miRack as an effects rack first within AUM, and then as a simple modular synth environment next, and then to keep making things more and more complex as I keep learning and practicing.

Volcano 3 from FabFilters is the best filter app, as others already pointed out.

Edit: removed my philosophy about ‘there is no best filter out there’ ;) sry.

Yep I have MI Rack and I also have a real Eurorack but I have no filter in it. I picked up the expert sleepers es-9 so I can route my system into my iPad for mixing and eq, filters, additional modulation and all the cool sequencers the iPad offers.
Really looking forward to using MI Rack with it the hardware as well. All those Mutable Instruments stuff. I love the Plateau reverb!

  • Hilda is very high up on my list. Probably first. Mainly cause it’s a Bram app and sounds great but also because it does triple duty… Synth, Audio FX, Midi FX.

Filters just like most synths/sounds/etc can be a very personal taste.
    That being said…

    Volcano
    TB Dual VCF
JAX/JAF makes a nice sounding filter
    Rhymdigare has a filter.

    Some Free Filters

    BlamSoft Filter
    Audiothing Filterjam
    Audio Modern Filterstep

Mooch used to have a filter that I loved but it’s not in the App Store anymore. That’s a real bummer cause I loved that thing.

  • I would also recommend:

    Farbfilter - Volcano
    ToneBoosters - Dual VCF

    love these both

  • I’ve been testing some of the digi filters I have over the past few days and out of the Arturia MS-20, Volcano 2, Mixbox, and Wow 2 ones, Wow 2 is a clear winner to my ears with the best sounding resonance. I’m betting Volcano 3 sounds as good, if not better though. Sticking your apps through a decent real analog is pretty unbeatable though.

  • AUM’s built-in filters usually suffice.

Would love your thoughts. Also recommend picking up the creative bundle (it should be cheap now that you’ve purchased a couple). Twin3 and Timeless are very deep and equally amazing. Those 4 apps make up 4 slots of my top 10 on iOS probably. The effects especially. It doesn’t really feel like a normal delay, saturation, filter, etc. It feels more like making your own from scratch which is awesome.

I already had Twin 3 so I got the other 3 for 30 bucks. I wasn’t sure how that was possible but I went for it. They all sound amazing and I imagine they’ll all be in every project. Actually I already recorded something with Saturn giving it some distortion and loaded it up in Morphagene.
    Cheers!

That's a crazy bargain. You won't regret it.

  • Seriously good deal... All 4 for what, 40 bucks?! Crazy good

It’s unreal how far the iPad has come over the last couple years.

  • This thread has made me very curious.

What characteristics of a filter make it especially suitable for ambient? I mean, I get it for delays and reverbs, but can't relate a genre to filters. Any enlightenment offered would be great.
