Best filter for ambient

  • There is no "best", what ever sounds good to you and has the functionality you need.

  • For me I used to use the Mutable Instruments Ripples and it was smooth and perfect for ambient. I suppose any filter will really do the job really.

    I have the hardware version of that but it is an analog module. Seems like it would not translate exactly to digital.

  • And Volcano would be my “winning” choice, if forced to make a recommendation. Apefilter is a nice complementary, more experimental filter as well.

    Those two should honestly have you set.

    Would love your thoughts. Also recommend picking up the creative bundle (it should be cheap now that you’ve purchased a couple). Twin3 and Timeless are very deep and equally amazing. Those 4 apps make up 4 slots of my top 10 on iOS probably. The effects especially. It doesn’t really feel like a normal delay, saturation, filter, etc. It feels more like making your own from scratch which is awesome.

    I already had Twin 3 so I got the other 3 for 30 bucks. I wasn’t sure how that was possible but I went for it. They all sound amazing and I imagine they’ll all be in every project. Actually I already recorded something with Saturn giving it some distortion and loaded it up in Morphagene.

    I got the same deal, and it’s amazing for what you get. I have a track I’m working on mastering now that uses Saturn and Timeless heavily. It just sounds so good.

    Exactly. With the right sequencer and effects you can make any synth work for ambient. That’s mostly what it relies on anyway. It’s more about the application of the tools than the tools themselves.

    Totally... But certainly things that allow you to do subtle modulation of simple sounds, play with harmonics nicely etc would be useful when it comes to a filter good for ambient. But yes, really it's just about how you use your tools.

    I mean even in terms of reverb, a lot of people might say Alteza, or Blackhole, but who says all ambient needs massive reverbs! I certainly often use room or even smaller reverbs for ambient stuff

    Agreed! In those cases Volcano would be great. Or any filter with exposed parameters + the super slow LFO of mLFO.

    Also agreed on your second point. I’ve made some ambient that sounds somewhat dry before and it can still work really well. Especially with spares instrumentation of a piano or something. Blackhole is definitely great for ambient. I love Alteza but I have to be going for a very certain atmosphere to use it. Blackhole is a bit more versatile albeit a bit less beautiful.

    To be honest most of the the patches I make on my Eurorack system sound fine without any filter at all. Pretty much all of my sound sources have some sort of filter built in even though it’s not labeled as a filter. For example 4ms Ensemble Oscillator I have been using without a filter for a couple years and it sounds great. I think having a filter will be a bonus. To be honest I’ve always wanted to only use my Eurorack system without a computer or the iPad, finally it hit me how many great tools the iPad had. To be honest you could use only MI Rack and get the same results, but there is still something about having real knobs, but that’s a whole other story.
