    Based on use..
    Gadget, AUM and Medusa.
Also Black Hole, Drum Computer, Koala, Spatializer.
Synths outside Gadget.. Aparillo, Factory, Model D and Animoog. Also Fluss and Zeeon.
Best non specialized midi generators would be ZOA, OODA and New Path.
I would like to get good at miRack.

I'm leaning towards buying a max unlock for Zenbeats. Simply because it reminds me of Gadget, and because it can easily use plugins.

I’m actually really enjoying Audio Kit’s AR 909. It’s definitely the best sounding TR909 I’ve come across on IOS. For $3,99 , it’s a no brainer.

As a user of many of these apps I would advise against ZB. It’s just a bit infuriating compared to the slickness of gadget and Koala.

I tried really hard with it because I like aspects of it but when you try to arrive at a final balance and bounce the thing problems often present themselves.

Also paid for max unlock but not sure what I actually got? Some presets? Couldn’t find any new stuff that was remotely useful.

  • NS2
    Drambo
    Cubasis 3

    ButterSynth
    SynthMaster One and 2
    Nambu

    Eventide reverbs
    Fluss
    ODC
    Choric

Few DAWs, few synths, few effects. It’s enough for me.

Plus lots of the Bud and 4 Pockets apps. But honestly, quite a few more too. iOS is such a fun playground.

Looking at comments on YT and elsewhere I think this might be a controversial opinion, but right now I'm really digging TB Lowtone.

Other favorites right now include ID700, Nambu, and TB Flowtones. Perennial favorites include Zeeon, the Moog apps, and Bram Bos's apps. For effects I keep going back to Bleass apps and Caelum apps.

The iOS ecosystem is an embarrassment of riches though, there are so many great apps that I haven't mentioned here.

Are people not liking Lowtone? I’ve mentioned it in my recent favorites as well. I didn’t realize it’s been poorly received. I think it’s fantastic. Love the Bleass and Caelum effects as well.

I saw a couple YT videos where a lot of the comments were to the effect of “meh, it’s just another monosynth with bass presets” which I frankly don’t get. The VCN is almost worth the price of admission itself, the gate function is a ton of fun, the effects section is very serviceable and the oscillators sound great. Not everyone agrees. To be fair I’m a sucker for multi-oscillator monosynths :)

Yeah I know some people genuinely just don’t like or see the point in mono synths but I’m a sucker for a good mono or duophonic synth myself.

And agreed Lowtone is amazing and sounds fantastic.

  • Reading through this thread just shows how amazing and spoiled for choice we are on iOS. I could sit here and just 100 apps that I love and still miss a lot more. That’s why I only included recents in my answer because otherwise I’d go on all day. I’m kinda tempted to do a top 25 later though to add here. I am a sucker for a good list 😂

At the end of the day I’m just thankful for the amount of apps we have at insanely low prices. It’s wonderful.

Hmmm I kinda feel the opposite. I love Zenbeats and it’s been my DAW of choice for over a year now. I wouldn’t compare it to Gadget or Koala though. They’re all 3 going for totally different things.

I think ZB is neck and neck with Logic for the best DAW we have on iPad OS.

Maybe I just had bad luck with it.

It’s a bit more processor hungry than Cubasis which is my go to, but it was mainly the workflow and the interface I couldn’t deal with. Couldn’t really figure out if it was trying to be Ableton or Logic.

I had some bad data loss experiences with it though and on that front Cubasis is rock solid, even if my iPad dies mid track it’s still there as I left it when I boot up. Zb seemed to lose a couple of my projects even after saving them. Might be user error.

  • AUM + pro fx. Patterning 2, Samplr. Animoog, Flytape 2. Turnado, Flux, Sitala, Loopy Pro, iFretlesss Bass. Xequence Keys/Pads, Mammoth, Elastic Drums, Grooverider. Enso. Tardigrain, Strng, Eventide effects, FRMS, Quanta, Spacecraft. Pianoteq.
    Endlesss.

  • ApeMatrix is King of Dawhood. Soundwise, gotta love old farts the noisy-or-delicate Shoom and untameable Beep Boop, and noise-capable new fart Hilda. For unique sound+vision, Borderlands is with few equals.

Logic is definitely what I would compare Zenbeats to. Very very similar workflow and feature sets. The UI polish, the step sequencer, and the built in instruments and effects put Logic in a higher tier in my mind, but if you are working with all AUv3's ZB definitely has its appeal. I keep it around on my iPad even though Logic is now my main DAW.

They’re neck and neck for me. I love the built in fx in Logic Pro for mastering the stems I record in AUM. Also love the studio strings and horns, sculpture, and drum synth a lot. Also, throwing a bunch of drones and loops into the clip launcher and running the master bus through the remix or step effects is super fun and makes it feel like a decent replacement for Launchpad (if I had to).

With Zenbeats I definitely prefer working with AUs there. Also love how easy it is to quickly record loops for the clip launcher. And you can record the performance directly to the timeline to create a fleshed out and more completed track. Also the pre and post mix knobs for effects is super useful. Also synth wise I may actually prefer ZB. Sampleverse and ZC1 are fantastic. But Sculpture in Logic beats everything I just wish the UI didn’t suck lol.

So yeah it’d be hard for me to chose so for now I’m keeping both. I think they’ve both earned their place. Sadly Cubasis 3 is not getting any use from me anymore. ZB and Logic are just more powerful and easier to use (imo of course).

ZB has come a long way with its updates, when did you last try it? Luckily I haven’t had any of those issues.

I can’t fault anyone for choosing one DAW over another though. It’s all subjective at the end of the day. Especially with DAWs as everyone has their own workflow that works best for them. Cubasis has been my go to from the original up until 3. In fact I only switched to ZB a year ago. Now I only use ZB and Logic. I still can’t bring myself to delete C3 though. I still think it’s a really great DAW it just can’t compete with the other 2 (for me).

    Top 50 here we go!

I laughed, thinking for sure you were joking, then glad to see that you weren’t! The short description of the apps is super helpful. Many apps I hadn’t even heard of. I’ve been creating iOS music since I got an iPhone 3GS, but I can’t keep up with all the apps that keep coming out and I can’t be the only one. A list like this would be a helpful addition to the AB Wiki.
    Thanks for the post!

Exactly. Most of the time I just open my AUM template and just scroll and choose random apps and have fun. Which makes it even harder to make a list because I’ll go back and use a different one and remember how much I loved it 😂

    Koala

There's some things I need that I don't have covered, or do but haven't learned
A way to have awesome drums
Any kind of guitar FX, especially something geared towards acoustic guitar

I love a lot of what I have and need to learn a lot about.. everything.. so I can use it live and for writing and recording.
I think I would benefit immensely from having a versatile analogue hardware synth that I can record audio from straight into the iPad. I know it would make a lot of the synths obsolete, but I as a songwriter would benefit immensely as it would help me get a move on.. I'm not hugely into plugins and MIDI etc, I'd really like to use the iPad mostly as just the place I use for live looping and for home recordings and mix/master songs on.. not so much the place I'm getting all my sounds etc as well - that side of things kinda annoys me.

I'd love to have the iPad more as my "DAW"/looper so to speak, maybe narrow in on just learning 1 DAW and a sampler and use hardware or 'real' instruments for most sounds.

With that in mind, I feel like Loopy Pro can probably do everything I want.

  • HOLY CRAP!!! That is an impressive database. Thanks, but I probably shouldn’t thank you since that list will likely consume my retirement fund (joking - I don’t have a retirement fund).
Funny thing is, I randomly selected an app that I had never heard of, and I already had it. 🤦‍♂️

Regarding zenbeats, I’ve tried it long ago, was not terribly impressed, but so much has happened since, and I see so many praises that I want to give it another go.

I’m just confused about the pricing model. I read the appstore description but if someone could break it down for me minus the roland-speak that would be great.

What limitations are in the free version? (I get essentials, what does it mean? Can I export audio? Save projects?)

What are the cloud IAPs good for? Sync across devices? Does it not have an iCloud files folder?

Why do store points get more expensive the more you buy? And what can they be redeemed for?

I could just try it myself but it would take time and effort and storage space so I was rather hoping someone could help with my laziness, because I’ve been wondering for some time
