Dark spot on iPad screen

My 2021 iPad Pro has developed a dark spot on the screen - about half to one centimetre in width it looks like a dirty smudge and is most noticeable on white backgrounds. It’s 2 years and 2 months since I bought the iPad new directly from Apple.

Took to Apple Store and they say it’s ‘probably a back light issue’ and essentially it’s irreparable. The options are either swap it for a new 2021 iPad Pro, or trade it in for a new 2023 model, or, the only one that makes sense to me, live with it. At least the dark spot doesn’t show up on Logic Pro with its dark background.

Just wondered if anyone else has come across this dark spot issue? I guess it’s just bad luck, but it sticks in the throat a bit.

  • I personally would back up the current 2021 Pro and swap it for a new 2021 Pro and restore the backup on there. :)

  • Apple told me swapping for a new 2021 iPad Pro would cost me about £800. The option to trade in my existing iPad for the latest iPad Pro was about £1,000, assuming they didn’t deduct anything for the ‘dark spot’. Yes, I wish I had Apple Care - £7.99 per month for my 512GB 12.9inch model.

  • @BillS My iPad 12.9 5th gen has just developed this issue within the past week. Fortunately it looks like I may actually have coverage so hoping I can get it resolved/replaced. It's minor but surprisingly distracting/annoying.

  • Looks like it would be easy to ignore. Meditation will help you ignore lifes more trivial issues.

  • @oddSTAR hope you get it sorted - let us know how you get on. Mine is still there, looks exactly the same as your screenshot. The weird thing is it occasionally disappears- maybe for an hour or so, then unfortunately reappears!

  • Very annoying and hopefully Apple does the right thing here. If you don’t get a satisfactory answer from your local Apple Store, (politely) petition Apple’s corporate headquarters by calling or writing them to explain the situation. If you’re nice about it, they often have the option to go beyond whatever your current coverage limitations might be.

Thanks for the advice. What's funny about that comment is that the 2nd sentence would've been sufficient and seemed even more helpful had it not been preceded by a comment that comes across as implicitly judgmental of my lack of perspective and inferior capacity to cope. We're all a little different and I'm doing my best, man! I know you meant well. Despite being a relatively patient and accepting human, squeaks in my car and apparently dark spots on my iPad screen are clearly a few of my weaknesses. Perhaps meditation is one answer, but I'll come back around to it after I see if Apple will honor their warranty.

For what it's worth @BillS , I did a bit of searching and this seems to be a fairly common issue on some of the later model iPads, typically in the same approximate location. Seems like a potential design flaw so I tend to agree with @NeuM on how to approach getting a satisfactory resolution from Apple in your case.

In the past, I've had instances where specific design or product flaws were the source of my problems with products which were too old and out of my AppleCare coverage, yet Apple bent over backwards to fix the problem. I will say though, in other cases they did not help. So, get a good person at Apple on your side and you just might get this solved.

And believe it or not, shouting or arguing with Apple Genius techs or reps will do nothing to get the problem resolved. Always be polite, always ask questions which the Apple employee can investigate or elevate up the chain of command and do not lose your temper or sense of humor with anyone at the Apple Store level. They deal with irate people all day and they'll respond to politeness.

I teach a French former “genius” and now he works troubleshooting problems with banks involving misplaced millions of euros in various transfers and he says that the worst thing about working Apple customer care was the amount of angry people… says nowadays everyone is much calmer and more polite, which I found interesting considering the magnitude of their problems.

I was very polite during my visit to the Genius Bar! The guy went to ask his manager if there was anything that he could do (maybe because I was nice 😊), but unfortunately there was not. I got a follow up customer satisfaction survey from Apple about my visit to their store, and was once again polite but I also expressed my disappointment that a fault had developed in little over two years on a £1,500 iPad. Not heard anything back - not that I was expecting to.

Any idea - how do I contact corporate HQ or punt it up the line? I’m in the UK.

  • @oddSTAR Just for the record, here’s mine - looks pretty much identical

  • Hope you’re able to get it sorted! My ADHD brain wouldn’t be able to simply ignore that. I definitely recommend apple care though. Sure you may not always need it but for me, it really helps with piece of mind knowing it’s there, and comes in clutch in these situations too.

  • I dropped mine off at Best Buy—closet thing to an Apple Store within 90mins. They mail it off to Apple. Sounds like it will be covered and I should have it back (but more likely a replacement) in about a week. I miss it already…

  • This dark spot issue is scary. Another thing to worry about…
@BillS , @oddSTAR, do you think that there’s a correlation between screen brightness you’ve been using your iPad and the risk of dark spots?
I mean the more brightness, the more load of the LEDs and bigger chance they die.
I mainly use my 2021 Pro indoors at max 30-40% brightess

One occurrence would be an outlier, but the more reports we're seeing about these defective LED backlights indicates there was a flaw in production that went undetected at the factory that made these. Hopefully Apple does the right thing and initiates a recall.

I had a live chat with Apple this afternoon, and the guy arranged a call back from a ‘senior adviser’. Very sympathetic but nothing doing. He suggested I ask my insurance company that provides my home contents insurance if they’d cover it which I thought was a somewhat bizarre fob off - I don’t plan to humiliate myself by doing so.

Ha-ha. Have you ever heard Apple recalled anything? :(

    Yes.
-15” MacBook Pro battery recall in 2019
-13” MacBook Pro screen backlight recall 2019
-Wall adapter power plug recall 2019

2019 was a very bad year for them.

Until the trivial issue becomes a growing issue threatening the integrity of the entire device. It's a heat burn from a defective battery, dimwit.

Apple care is so worth it. Just dropped my latest model (fell out of the Apple folio case…not as magnetic as they used to be) and shattered the screen, took it in on a Tuesday, and I had a brand new replacement by Saturday, at the cost of a $49 fee..not bad considering I get the bonus of a battery health reset. And the Apple Care plan is still good for the new one (really shocked at that part). The crowded Apple store gave me Covid, though, so not all roses. But highly recommend the extra cost. Stuff just happens.

Apple hasn’t typically recalled products (though recalls have happened) more frequently they have quietly replaced units that develop defects or reimbursed repair costs when a lot of units have developed the same problem.

One example was a large run of MacBook Pro's somewhere around 2011 where after 2-3 years the screens would periodically go haywire and then eventually would stop booting. I had one logic board swap while it was under AppleCare and then two years later, the same thing happened. The repair cost was $300...and then a lot of reports of this issue were popping up on Mac-centric forums...and Apple quietly reimbursed people and swapped logic boards for free for a year or two more (until supplies were gone).

There were multiple recalls in 2019, which I posted earlier.

I do not think screen brightness was a factor. I am very conservative with screen brightness and use it a lot in bed at night so the levels are typically set low. I’m inclined to blame another internal component located in that area, possibly the battery as noted earlier tho I cannot confirm that specifically.

If you touch that spot during charge or intensive usage, do you feel it’s warmer than other parts of the display?

Second silliest post on this thread so far. You boys need to understand that if you've got a pro it's doing screen refreshing at 60 fps which makes the batteries drain sooner even if you're not using any intensive apps. If you have apps running in the background and you leave them on while the ipad is plugged in, and you're using dodgy cables and chargers, you're going to get excessive heat. It doesn't mean that one spot is going to be warmer than others, it means there is more electrical energy being used over time which is burning the LCD screen in that area.

My recommendation is pay someone to replace the screen and then try to replace the ipad. Take it back to apple for a buy back and exchange it for a newer one and don't get the pros because the screen refresh rate, while seemingly a nice feature, comes with baggage.
