Tera Pro or Buttersynth

edited August 2023 in General App Discussion

Help me make a choice. I'm not new to synths, I don't use presets, I like to create my own presets from scratch. I came to the conclusion that there are now 2 synths on ios with better sound and deeper features. I do not consider twin 3 because the interface is not for ios. If you have both, what would you choose if you had to choose one? I will be glad to know your opinion

  • I have both and love both. They are both sonic beasts and are highly capable of a wide range of sounds, and have a broad feature set. They are both in my top 5 for sure.

They have many things in common, but they are not the same:

    • if it comes down to UI and immediacy, I find it easier to navigate the Buttersynth UI and do things quickly. More menu diving in Tera Pro just because of the modular architecture, which means it's more powerful and flexible in some ways, but simple things sometimes take a bit longer
    • neither has an UNDO function (grrrr) so save often. Thankfully this is easy in both synths
    • if you want a more modular architecture, Tera Pro is definitely the one, but it presents that in an unusual way, which makes sense once you get it
    • if you want to do sample based work, Buttersynth can both play samples and do granular. Tera Pro has neither
    • both have Wavetable (2x) and FM capability, though Tera Pro offers this as an IAP
    • both have great effect sections
    • Tera Pro has a significantly broader range of oscillator types and options including Karplus (e.g. for modelling), an emulation of BrainZ Eurorack module
    • Tera Pro has a randomiser for creating surprising starting points, and they are often very usable, though this might not be of much use to you if you like to start with blank slate

Tera Pro has been my top synth for a while now, but Buttersynth has muscled its way to the top table very quickly and I'm getting some great results with it.

    Hope that helps a bit.

  • I’d choose buttersynth. @craftycurate points are bang on.
Tera Pro is quite peculiar in how modules only appear when you make a connection to them elsewhere… maybe you would get used to that.
Sample playback, and granular wins it for me! Buttersynth if i could only have one.

But they’re both fantastic, I have both and along with Dagger, they are the most impressive VAs i have heard on IOS. You wouldn’t be wasting cash getting all three.

  • tera pro

    or both

  • I actually prefer Twin 3 over Tera but Buttersynth is my favorite overall. I find it has the best interface and the smallest learning curve. Tera Pro definitely requires you to really dig in and learn its interface as things there are done in a particular way. It’s still a great and very powerful synth and sound wise it may edge out Buttersynth but only slightly. Both are 2 of the best synths on iOS though.

In order I’d say BS, Twin3, Tera Pro.

  • Tera Pro has always peaked my interest until I signed up for the BS beta and then bought the synth after release and often use it.
It seems like Tera Pro with all the IAP modules ends up around twice the cost of BS. Are all the modules essential and is it worth the price?
As I already use BS I don’t want to purchase another synth I’ll take time to learn to use, then never use or worse delete and send it to my synth graveyard.

yes, it's worth the price, also those iap.
tera pro is one of my most used ios synths.

  • Both, although if I HAD to choose, Butter

  • I like the sound of Tera Pro alot, very good. But I got a hard time getting used with its UI. I like to have an overview instead of scrolling/expanding/collapsing. I can have countless hours of fun dialing stuff in synths like Sunrizer, but Tera is something else. The sound is so good it deserves to be played. But the UI.. damn, I need to chew on it some more.

  • The sound examples of tera pro from YouTube are very impressive. I listened to the presets for an hour and it didn't get boring. But buttersynth's interface seems to be friendlier.

  • @Slush +1 to everything you said. One of the best sounding synth both on iPad and desktop, cover everything you expect from Waldorf synth. Constantly added sound modules is cherry on top. UI is not the strongest part, a lot of menu diving, strange connection system, mseg editor unusable and still no undo options. But it's getting better. Buttersynth on the other hand feels more like Serum but it was buggy so I left it to better days.

I’ve been waiting for the Black Friday sales to actually purchase Drambo, I’ve been watching a few videos and reading some posts about it and the system looks great, and has become my wishlist synth.
But since I’ve read this thread i’m thinking I need to push drambo back and get Tera first.

Evidence for personal preferences? That's an odd question. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Maybe we should start doing blind tests on ourselves before we tell people what we like. 😉

  • @ehehehe Well, I have to agree with you, I own Tera Pro, but I have yet to see a demo of BS that sounds better than Tera. But it’s best to judge if you own both I guess.

  • As a result, I took Tera Pro. This sounds great. Now I can afford one iap. Which of the three is more functional and brings more variety to the sound?

I’d say Brainz for sure. You get 16 (I think) different synth modules each with their own unique flavor and focus. It can lead to some crazy stuff. Unless you already have the free Spectrum bundle. In which case, if you don’t want overlap, I’d say the FM.

  • There is a strange issue with Tera Pro. When I start a new project, I can add a few Tera Pro instances with heavy presets, add a few fabfilter plugins with the high quality option enabled, and my ipad (2021 9gen) has no issues and runs smoothly. But if I save the project, exit and reopen, it freezes completely with DSP:MAX. If I turn off all Tera PRO project comes to life. The problem is relevant even if there is only 1 copy of Tera Pro with a light bass preset in the project. Attaching photo

  • Sorry, the latest version released a couple of days ago has a severe saving bug. Just fixed it and is in the AppStore waiting for review. Hope to be available today.

Just out of curiosity in case it is not secret:) VirSyn is one man company ? I mean at least in terms of coding .. from your posts it looks like that :-)

Mad respect ! The quantity and quality of your products is incredible. I can still remember back in 2001 (or somewhere round that that year) when first Tera was released (at least i think TERA was first) i was blown away how it sounds even better than Access Virus which i owned back then ..

Size of your porfolio looks like result of company which employees at least 5-6 devs :)

I tend to believe those 2 guys together will be able to make full blown desktop grade DAW for iOS in under 1 year of dev time

Installed today's update, rebooted the ipad. In my case it didn't help. 16.6

  • @KMTGN : i suggest reporting this to @VirSyn if you have not already.

  • @KMTGN The already saved patch / aim project is damaged, sorry. But if you make a new one it should work.

Brainz is good and it should remain on the BUY list, but today I’d recommend the FM7 iap. You’ll immediately gain thousands of new patches you can work with, if that’s important to you.
