Decent Sampler RJS Guitar

Just Decent Sampler RJS Guitar with a bit of reverb, played (with mistakes 🤨) on GeoShred

  • Sounds really nice @GeoTony

I searched for “RJS guitar” in decent sampler and didn’t see anything (?)

  • Decent Sampler and RJS is a very recent discovery for me, and I hadn’t even thought of controlling it through GeoShred. Really, really lovely piece Tony, and as usual kudos for playing it in live. Sounds very guitar like! Bravo.

Can’t believe the app and sample are both free! Isn’t iOS fantastic?!

    Edward, try Pianobook

  • Sorry Edward ( @Edward_Alexander ). I’ve lumped PianoBook and DS together. The sample is from PianoBook but hosted in DS. See attached screenshot.
It made me realise @BillS how ‘real’ this sounded compared with a lot of the GS modelled sounds and I know, free, how can you beat that ?
Thanks both for the listen and comments…

  • Ah, Pianobook! Thx

  • Wow, inspiring. I will have to download this once I get a new ipad that can handle it.

  • What lovely chords and a great sound too. RJS is a new one to me but Pianobook is such a rich source of wonderful samples! Will definitely have to check the RJS sounds out!

  • Lovely choices from sample to GUI to chord choices. Your musical preferences live in the same neighborhood as mine. I think we’re in the same zip code.

  • Lovely. Off to find RJS on Pianobook now...

  • Very calm and soothing piece. Looking at the chords, it seems easier to play on a real guitar than on a small piece of glass. Even on a 12.9 iPad, those triads must require great deal of dexterity. I would get tendinitis playing this with Geoshred, you're an expert, Tony ! I'll stick to my fretboard !

  • Cheers @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr , @AlterEgo_UK , @McD , @belldu and @JanKun .
I’m honoured to be on the same planet @McD 😊
I use two hands @JanKun so it’s not too bad. Arthritis stops me using 5 digits on each hand so the best I can do is probably 3 per hand so it’s a good job there aren’t more than 6 strings. If I’m doing runs using 3NPS then I use one finger on the left hand and 2 on the right.
Here is a slightly different SC version…

  • is there a way to convert that guitar pack to exs24 or sfz?

Sounds great! Which variation are you using? And have you had issues with the feedback and noise presets not making any sound?

  • Also does anyone know if Decent Sampler will work with external storage? That PSP by far take up the most storage on my iPad.

  • No idea @Birdpie , I’m a beginner with samples. Sure somebody else can help though.
@HotStrange , If I try and open the zip file that is downloaded directly then I also get an error. What I had to do was unzip it in Files. This created a folder called RJS Guitar Pianobook Package. Inside this is a file called RJS Guitar (DS).zip. If you open this with DS it works (for me anyway)

That worked for me as well but the included noise and feedback patches wouldn’t work. The rest of them did. Exiting the app and opening back up fixed it.

The one I’m having an issue with is the classic electric by the same person. It won’t load no matter what I try so I just gave up on it.

  • @HotStrange , if I listen to the noise and feedback samples by themselves I can hear a bit of noise but they don’t seem to do anything with one of the main samples. I put that down to my inexperience of using this stuff but perhaps they just don’t work?
I agree about the Classic Electric, I can’t get it to work either. It flashes up a message which I think might have the word Size in it but I’m not sure as it is very brief. No suggestions I’m afraid 🤨

  • Classic Electric works, but has nested zip files. You need to unzip it then find the right ones.

  • Could you give a bit more detail @belldu . I’ve looked and tried again but can’t see any more zip files after the initial zip ? Cheers !

I can hear them making sounds it’s just very quiet. Not sure if that’s an issue or intentional but I wouldn’t imagine a preset called noise is meant to be quiet 😂

I think it probably meant to be string and fret noise which is likely to be quieter then the actual guitar tone.

Maybe so but at least for me, it’s barely even audible. I had to hold me ear up to the speaker to even know any sound was being made at all lol. I mostly got it for the guitar though so I reckon I can’t complain.

I think I’m going to stick with my fretboard as well, but not for the same reasons as you.

I don’t have any issues with “performing” these chords and such on the glass w/GeoShred, but all this renaming, re-zipping, dslibrary this, and all these different files and formats that, just seems like a lot of work to me.

Is there a straight forward set of instructions for this process somewhere? A thread on the specific topic maybe?

    @GeoTony

The most incredible thing I saw recently on YouTube was a guy playing his electric guitar through midi guitar 2 to play the classical guitar inside Pianoteq 8. Well, I mean... it is very cool to be able to do that but, hmmm, 🤔

You mean instructions for downloading and installing the sample packs?

Yeah, but more of the converting the Pianobook stuff (Kontakt files?) for Decent Sampler use I guess.

I know the documentation is out there. Probably right in front of me. I guess I’m just lazy.

There’s this comment, on the “RJS Classic electric” page that made me back off from even trying:

Tricky on IOS, but worth the effort
This guitar sounds fabulous. Alas, there is some effort required to get it working on IOS. The key thing to understand (no pun intended) is to follow the instruction in the ReadMe to the letter, THEN re-zip the package and rename its extension from .zip to .dslibrary. At that point you can tap on the file you just renamed and install it to Decent. Any other way just results in error messages.

    Ok, here are the steps:
    1. Download this
    https://pianobook.co.uk/packs/rjs-classic-electric/

    1. Unzip it
You now have a RJS Classic Electric v1_1 folder. Go into it, and see two subfolders.

    2. Copy 'Electric' and 'Chords' samples from RJS Classic Electric folder to RJS Classic Electric (DS) folder
The samples are in the kontact folder by default, we want them in the DS folder instead...

It should now look like this

    1. Go back one level and Compress the RJS Classic Electric (DS) folder to create a new zip file

    2. Share the zip file into DS

While on the subject of Decent Sampler files. I have found that editing the @dspreset files with an XML editor (I use Textastic that @_Ki recommended for editing Mozaic scripts when he shared his syntax editing meta-files).

XML files open the door to fixing some Decent Sampler limitations in PianoBook projects. Often a Piano Book instrument is only set up for 1 octave and I like to spread the samples across the keyboard completely which can make a simple toy piano sample more powerful. It’s also a way to create multi-layers of samples. Digging into the world of Decent Sampler XML you can learn how effects are added, how the User Interface is layer out and assigned to effects and samples can be round-robben’ed, tied to note or MIDI events. The documentation for Decent Sampler XML lives at:

    https://www.decentsamples.com/docs/format-documentation.html

    There are informational articles at:

    https://www.decentsamples.com/blog/

Decent Sampler recently added micro-tuning support too.
