WoodValvet by Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio (Released)
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/woodvalvet/id6456797752
WoodValvet is a tube emulated saturator with extra teatures :
- has 3 tube stages each with their own "Drive" control.
each stage can be set to a different tube type
(ECC82, ...).stage 2 & 3 can be set in series or in parallel to create different harmonics.
- stage 1 & 2 are class A circuits, stage 3 is a class AB circuit.
- an input band filter allows to add harmonics on the selected band only.
- a post tube out lowpass filter allows to reduce the higher harmonics.
- a "Constant Level" setting matches the output level with the input level.
- has an LFO to modulate the drive and filter settings.
- side chain input can modulate the drive settings (increase or duck mode).
- has an "Auto Gain Input" mode to automatically bring quiet signals into range.
- has a Stereo spread control.
- has a brick-wall limiter on output
- has a DC blocking output filter
- has an output phase switch.
- has a visual representation of the generated harmonics.

A bit steep buying "unheard". I'll pass till I listened to some demos. Curious though.
Definitely curious about this. The SGA Phoenix app is on sale right now and was thinking about buying it but I am a fan of Woodmans apps. I’ll hold off for a demo but it looks cool.
competitor to 'Valves'!

Indeed! Very similar ballpark I guess. Probably some tone head like @Jamie_Mallender would be the guy to do a youtube comparison vid on these when Valves comes out?
Amazing that this came out the same day as Audiothing Valves. Quite different price tiers unfortunately for Woodman.
I think there’s room for both this and Valves. Bad timing on the release a bit for sure lol but this one looks like a very deep dive into tubes in comparison with Valves. I’ll be getting around to getting both eventually I think but I’d like to hear a demo of this one to hear how well it sounds cos Valves is magnificent sounding
7-minute silent tweaking demo & giveaway (4 copies of ANY Woodman app - details etc in pinned comment)
Seems like Valves is going for a more set it and forget, surface level dive into tube saturation (absolutely nothing wrong with that), whereas this seems quite a bit deeper and better for programming some more complex saturation sounds.
Both could be useful I think and I’ll probably end up getting both eventually.
Yeah bad timing for sure. SGA also just put their tube app on sale lol.
I think both could be and probably will be great. And they seem different enough.
Yes - I posted in the valves thread, but worth mentioning there that my WoodValvet video pinned comment now has a detailed pros / cons comparison of each. They have significantly different strengths and weaknesses, but I agree with your summary, in a nutshell, yes!
I don’t have either but would seriously dig doing that!
You should hit up the devs, dm me if you need contacts
Yes! A Jamie video about tube amps? Sign me up!
Here goes the (not so) dumb question. So what’s the difference between a tube and a valve?.
As for the comparison with Valves, IMO the Woodman’s offering makes more sense. Valves barely makes up for its name as it’s only got 2 valve options and rather scarce controls. For just straightforward valve emulation there’s a ton of options like Saturn. BYOD… and if we include tubes (see question) even more.
@tahiche : found this funny vid explaining it :
Woodman
I was pondering this as well. I feel like I can use Saturn/BYOD along with Speakers to get the same sound and vibe that Valves is giving, but WoodValvet seems to have its own thing going on. Some cool and unique combinations possible and looks great for experimenting with saturation and tube sounds.
Saturn and BYOD are my favorite distortion apps by far, but I feel like WoodValvet is the next closest to adding something new(ish) to what I already have. This and Fusion both.
Tube is what the yanks call valves, which is what the Brits and the euros call them - I guess the first is a visual description of them, while the other describes the functionality…for even more fun, identical models have handy codes which are entirely different between the two sides of the Atlantic ECC8x vs 12Ax7 and such joys, in this case the U.S. system is a bit more informative as it actually describes the voltage you apply to the heaters, although the euro system is handy once you know what the letters mean (generally combinations of triodes and pentodes, I forget now but the first letter might also be something heater related E being 12 and P being 6 I think…)
Oh damn, that is useful!
Tbh, for my personal uses I would probably go with the Woodman one over the AudioThing one if I had to choose and money was not an issue - just a personal choice, mainly based on the inbuilt lfos and the interesting possible lfo destinations. My YT vid linked above explains the pros and cons of each in detail in its pinned comment, and will be a helpful read, I think, for anyone not clear on the similarities and differences between them.
I’m actually having some issues that all seem to originate from the stereo spread knob. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but the minute I start adding some stereo spread I start getting audio cutting out of one side of the headphones, crackling, popping, etc. It also causes 25% of the values for the amp bias drive to stop working and will occasionally lead to loud repetitive squeals. It doesn’t happen all the time and sometimes it works as it should. Other times is all goes haywire. Turning stereo off fixes everything but introducing stereo again will immediately start causing problems.
@HotStrange : ok I'll check the problem with the stereo spread.
Woodman
I tried to replicate that, had no problem. But I can't get sidechain to effect drive 3
I don’t think this or the Audiothing one will be something I am going to use for the stuff I do, but the video done by Gavin on the Woodman sounds very interesting, really experimental.
I use beta of valvet in TestFlight (and now I have a release, of course) and can say, that it’s more inspirational (not only) saturator. You can add it on the master bus for more shiny mix, you can add the warm to tracks, you can use it as experimental clocked overdrive for synths or drums, you can use it as tube distortion (more in gain and less out gain)….
I like Woodman’s plugins for the features. Every effect had more additional creative possibilities. Valvet not an exception.
Agreed. Overall I’m really enjoying this app. Only other ones I have are Woodstepper and Woodsynth but I love them both and am looking forward to trying more.
Do you like weird delays? My favorite Woodman plugin is Woodulator
Easily my fave of his!
Yes! Delays are my favorite kinda of effects and that’s the top effect of his on my list to get next.
Definitely need to watch this later. Isn’t this going for a similar thing as Rainbow Delay, Bleass, etc where it’s a delay and pitch modulator or is it also doing it’s own thing? Some of the demos I’ve heard sound nuts!
Does Bleass do reverse delay too? I don't recall. I see Woodulator in the same territory as the Chase Bliss Thermae delay pedal.
