I see you’re part of the note taking hardcore massive - you and @jonmoore would probably have a lot to discuss, Maybe you two can share the throne for ‘forum member who has thought most deeply about notetaking and productivity apps’!
Just sharing my experience, might be helpful to someone. The majority of people here probably don’t even need this functionality. 😅
There's always the danger with productivity apps that they breed lack of productivity as people get so bogged down in researching, learning and tweaking their 'system'.
Thankfully, as McD pointed out, what I'm after here is not productivity but sheer writing pleasure!
If it’s just natural media fun you’re after rather than note taking, I’ve been using the Art Set apps for years like that, but they’re very much focused on image making rather than notes… I’m well intrigued by the paper feel screens, I haven’t heard of them until you mentioned them. Has anyone found a magnetic one that’s good to fit to an Air 3? I’m wondering if the ones for the Air 4 would be the same or not, but can’t tell really from Amazon…
One thing is to make a shopping list and sketch some ideas, or makea task list.
But to be able to use and reuse all learning notes, illustrations, charts, diary pages, ideas, development concepts, app info, etc., you really need a few more tricks up your sleeve. 🤓
The real waste of time is when you do the same thing over and over again: long searches for something that should be a few clicks away; relearning instead of refreshing what you already know; reinventing the wheel.
after much internal resistance, i finally picked up a (knock off) pencil, and i have to say it's quite good )
my own rummaging through apps, was then to find that app that output the smallest file size (for website use)
MixOnPix (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/mix-on-pix-text-on-photos/id633281586) is the current front runner, although Affinity Designer is more powerful, and may well win out.
wanted to say thanks for the thread and suggestions within it.
sketchesPro (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tayasui-sketches-pro/id671867510) had been picked up by me in the past, and then later removed (space limitations), but with the addition of the pencil, is really a Lovely thing )
i am of course assuming this is the same sketches pro, mentioned in the thread,,, there are soooo many of the soooo similar apps, with such similar names, and thanks to app store "search", even if you type correctly, apple still seems to "know best" )
hence never finding the Notes+ Gavinski mentions.
pens and paper will still be my Love, but if this is the future, may as well find the best way to swallow it.
and on a Love/hate apple tip, why why why can't i merge my apple note notes, oh apple...
Hi Simon - this is the Notes+ I’m talking about:
https://apps.apple.com/app/notes-note-taking-app/id1609361989
Icon:
Sketches Pro is the one that Apple put on all their iPad Pros in the appstore back in the day to show people how great the pencil was:
https://apps.apple.com/cn/app/tayasui-sketches-pro/id671867510
There is of course a free version of that too.
One thing I have noticed with notetaking apps is that it can pay to buy them early - they often tend to do the upgrade thing for a while, then turn subscription.
Look also at the sales history of Sketches Pro - I’m pretty sure I bought it for next to nothing years ago, but it is now $7.99
Anyone know offhand if any of these apps allow you to use keyboard shortcuts. Eg a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to clear the screen? I know some can allow that with double tap on the pencil btw, but could see keyboard shortcuts being useful
After trying most of the apps mentioned above, I have come to use mostly two apps for writing needs. One, Procreate (though it is a painting app, the amount of flexibility it gives is unmatched) and other being, Whink where my handwriting feels natural.
I picked up a Kindle Scribe on sale just to get that pencil on paper feeling.
I’ll probably get this magnetic overlay when it’s ready to improve the pencil experience.
Thanks @Gavinski for getting such a complete conversation going around the topic of faux penmanship as a perceptual experience. I miss fountain pens and rich drawing instruments. This gorilla glass world has no soul as a tactile connection to the sense of touch. Visually it’s a miracle.
I’m still hoping @lineatlineman gets deep into his ROLI Seaboard because piano keys just hurt my hands and a gentler interface is timely for my physical changes.
Those people who use and love Procreate (me included) need to check out it’s vector counterpart, Amadine. It's a better option for calligraphy and is true to the SVG format for export. I have this along with my Affinity Designer. Amadine has a perfect and user-friendly touch UI, not just a port from the desktop as Designer.
I remember you mentioning your hand arthritis yes. A seaboard would not be that ideal actually, if you want lightness of touch - probably Sensel Morph would be a good choice or Linnstrument if you can afford it. The Sensel Morph might be going cheap now, as they've been discontinued, worth a look online maybe. Need a desktop to edit it which always annoyed the shit out of me. Ymmv!
Whink seems a bit too minimalist for me, unless the 2 year old YT walkthrough I just watched part of (Paperless X, great channel and I love her accent) is out of date - only has ballpoint pen type, only 3 nib thicknesses available, only three types of paper. Definitely wouldn't suit me, personally then, I reckon. Procreate I am getting a really weird experience writing in but I can't figure out why and can't remember if it was like that before. I deleted and reinstalled the app in case I had changed something weird last time I used it, which was a long long time ago, but still no joy. I'll watch a vid on Amadine, thnx @Luxthor
Does anyone actually have Defter Notes? It really looks very cool.
Does it have a fountain pen though, or just sth like a ballpoint?
Does it have a manual? Couldn't find one online.
@Gavinski said:
I'm a Defter Notes user and love it but the pen selection (no fountain pen) is poor and my main criticism of the app. I asked about this and the devs said this is something they really want to expand upon in future updates. As it is right now, the app is certainly not what you are looking for. That said, it is a great app with seemingly dedicated devs, useful updates and cool features.
Thanks! Yeah I actually joined the discord yesterday and could see they were talking about how they were working on this more than a year ago. Guess I'll pass for now but it does look like an incredible app in other ways. Maybe let us know if that feature gets added! Cheers
I watched promo videos. It's a good-looking billboard app, especially the wormhole feature. But I can't see any file management system, data organization, etc. All you can see on the official page is pimping that note billboard.
Yeah... Maybe no manual is an indication that they don't really want people to read through thoroughly and realise, oh damn, it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that...
Blows my mind that after all this time there is not one thorough walkthrough video on this. They should throw that girl from Paperless X a promo code and some $$$... Badly needs a proper spoken walkthrough
That's what I was referring to earlier. So if you see any note taking app with a number after it's name, you'd probably best buy it before it turns subscription. Generally devs don't want to piss off their long-term user base who bought the app in the pre-subscription days. Subscription is another one of those things that will mostly just come back to bite devs. When too many apps go subscription, people really start to dislike the subscription model. Nobody wants to be paying monthly or annually for more than a handful of truly stellar apps
thanks @Gavinski )
seems the Notes+ you recommend is not available in the uk store (
Goodnotes 6 can be purchased for a one-time price of $29, so at least there is that option. I'm still on version 5, I don't think I need to upgrade. I use the app for basic note-taking and to script my comic book, the older version still has everything I need.
Ah damn, that’s a bummer - maybe see if you can get a contact for the devs and ask them why - no reason it wouldn’t do well there, and hell, it’s free anyway!
Btw, I took the plunge on Defter Notes. That sexy was beckoning me, and I am not disappointed! Even though it lacks the fountain pen option, the lack of a proper manual is annoying and I initially ran into a few bugs that have magically resolved themselves.
It is gorgeous though and a pleasure to use. Really shows off what a good touchscreen app can do. At $20 for a one-off purchase, given the mad subscription prices of some notetaking apps, I would highly recommend it.
It's a pretty weird comic
A personal project which I have worked on (on and off) for about ten years. I made a thread about it back in 2020.
You can read it here, at least the parts that I have completed so far:

I update my progress on Instagram (I also sometimes post my music there):

Some sample images from the comic:
I got a matte screen protector for my new iPad 11 Pro M2 a couple months ago. It was just going to be for when I feel like drawing... but honestly, I like it better for everything. I like the tactile feel for browsing, and I actually like the display better with slightly lower contrast and no reflective shine. It feels silly to have an expensive display like this covered by an inexpensive sheet of matte plastic, but I do like it better overall. Haven't taken it off in a couple months.
It really does feel like I'm writing on paper with the Apple pencil.
This is the one I got. It was on sale at the time so I paid about $5 less than this for it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B7NDSWXJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Fantastic.
That looks absolutely brilliant Richard
@skiphunt yeah, that's why it's good to get one that uses magnets, can take the matte screen protector on and off easily. But best to keep a tempered glass screen protector permanently on under that one too anyway. I also like the feel of the matte one though, and I think I've only bothered taking it off once since I got it.
Really cool drawings @richardyot ! You have some amazing multi-talent, are you still active on the Modo scene as well? Personally I miss 3D but it just get's too much (although I've taken up After Effect again after many years absence, great software).
