Thump One by TOYBOX Now Out! Spoken Walkthrough, Demo & Giveaway (See PInned YT Comment)

Thump One by TOYBOX About to Drop! Spoken Walkthrough, Demo & Giveaway (See PInned YT Comment)

Now out in some app stores at least, already:
AppStore link:

Remember to leave the devs a rating and review!

Also remember this is totally free for desktop!:

https://www.toyboxaudio.com/products/thump-one

This video is a detailed spoken walkthrough tutorial, demo and review of Thump One by Toybox, an excellent and fresh new wavetable synth with added 'buzz' oscillators, FM Synthesis capabilities and a layer section based on the legendary Roland Supersaw. The wavetables are mostly derived from real analog 808 kicks, often with analog processing applied, tape saturation etc, so it's highly characterful.

It's free on desktop & cheap on iOS at a mere $3.99. I think this will be VERY popular, and am predicting an almost guaranteed number 1 or at least number 2 in the appstore paid music app charts.

Giveaway details with the chance for 5 people to win a copy of Thump One for iOS can be found in the pinned YouTube comment and winners will be announced 2 days from now:

David from Toybox, and maybe some of the rest of the crew will be in the live chat at the premiere, come join us! Toybox have been making Reaktor Blocks since 2012, they know their stuff.

  • If this is nearly as good quality as the Reaktor blocks, this might inflame our iPads immediately. I hope you had a Fire extinguisher (sorry don‘t know what was wrong with my last cup of coffee)

This is quality, no question! Absolutely epic sound with a pretty and well-thought-out UX and synth architecture. Of course, as with many desktop ports, there are a couple of things that could be improved, which I mention throughout and at the end of the video, but overall it is truly excellent. See you in the live chat hopefully, starting 30 mins from now

OP has been updated with links:

    AppStore link:
    https://apps.apple.com/app/6449721702

    Toybox website: https://www.toyboxaudio.com

The app is now out, in some stores at least, and remember that it is free for desktop!

  • Oh man! This is super insane. Wow. This is so good.

  • Usual question; could I coax “nice” sounds out of this? The phrase “soaring acid leads” makes me want to run a mile…

  • No need to answer that - just realised it's free for desktop, so I've downloaded it....

  • Great demo by Gavinski!

    Bought!
I was on the beta, it’s just GREAT. Can do so many interesting kicks, percussions, basses and what not.
And happy to see some of my presets made it in the Kicks section! B)

And don’t forget to d/l their free 808 pack here: https://www.toyboxaudio.com/pages/sound-store

  • Downloaded the free desktop version, read thru the manual but could not find any 'sustain' point for the envelope which is pretty much essential for lead-type sounds but for other types of sounds it's most likely more than enough and leaving the level envelop at max level it's suitable for drones :sunglasses:

Ah, you made some presets, nice!!!

@Samu dev is super friendly and open, maybe message him? @Freeco

@Morgman73 Fully agree, this will be an absolute smash hit for sure, anyone who liked BlipBox and Phase Monkey will dig this.

By the way, I still can’t figure out, in the new YouTube update, how the hell to slide from the main comments view to the live chat view - it looks like you should be able to swipe but nothing is working for me

Good to know, I really like the BIG UI of the Mac version, makes things super easy to see!
Should I get un-lucky in the give-away I might grab it anyway :sunglasses:

As Legato was perfectly implemented sustain felt like a natural thing to look for.

But in all honestly it's not a 'must have' for this app and it would be tricky to 'get right' considering that the envelope range is not linear.

Even numerical feedback for the envelope segments would be tricky considering the attack and decay knobs scale the envelope times.

With all these technicalities it's easy to forget what this app is all about and it's the SOUND. It's top notch!

    Cheers!

Yes, the sound is incredibly rich - I guess mono / paraphonic synths have their upsides: see Dagger etc

best kick/percussion plugin (when i doesn't count Drambo:) on iOS

Really glad that dev implemented some of my comments, finally something which can substitute ISM Bassizm (desktop plugin)on iOS 👍👍👍👍

  • I LOVE this… Such a little gem. Cheers to @freeco 🍻
    Great stuff!

    High praise!

  • The envelopes on this one are super unique

Ah, is it not available for iPhone? Didn't know that. Tbh though, given how it currently scales, I doubt you could read the text. If it didn't come out as an iPhone app, it's unlikely to become one. As has been discussed many times, the number of people making music on their phone is too small for many devs to be bothered developing apps that work on phone. Perhaps not bothering with that can also keep prices down for iPad users? I fully understand that if you're a phone based musician, you would want every app to be universal, but it seems it's not a realistic ask.

  • Yes because of the way the envelopes work the GUI ended up being too small to be usable on iPhone, so we made the decision to make it iPad only, hopefully will be making some iPhone apps in the future though! :)

Ah yeah, I can understand that. Worth the trade off as the envelopes are excellent!

  • Sounds great. Fantastic UI. It’s pretty resource intensive here on my iPad Air 3. Device heats up a bit while running in stand alone. I can max out on 6 instances in AUM.

I also had a bit of a heating issue sometimes, running in AUM, even just with one instance. A device restart seemed to fix it in my case.

I’ll have to give that a go later after work and report back. Excellent walkthrough Gav.

Cheers Shiloh! As Toybox were good enough to sponsor it, they deserved a deep one!

  • @Freeco what is the AUv3 parameter ‘crosspoint’ controlling? It is listed in the AU parameters list but I neither see nor hear it doing anything when I map it to an LFO, thanks!

  • I've got this thing making some lovely noises, but all of them start with a click. Anyone know how to soften the start? The attack knob doesn't seem to help.

  • Are there other themes for look?

No.. Wonder if that's an option @Freeco would consider adding

Could be cool to tie the UI theme color to the Wavetables wave.

Did a hard reset and It stills gets temps up pretty quickly. Not the end of the world, but it’s pretty noticeable.

Yeah definitely seems like there's room for optimisation. Is it hard on the battery?

Dont have app. Wonder what parameters can automated etc ?

Dont know much about wavetable. If its a wavetable engine. Think wavetable needs full phase ( I guess ) To stop oscilator click. So maybe there needs to be a phase setting.
