Did IPad OS17 break anything?
I’m contemplating updating but does anyone know if there are any apps that won’t open or crashes since updating? Are there any reasons I shouldn’t update? Thanks in advance 🙏
Comments
Don’t know about apps, as whatever I have been using are working fine (aum, lumbeat apps, geoshred, pure piano, etc) but auto (display) lock isn’t working at all.
On an older system, Sierra, due to software version requirements. After updating to 17.0.1, iTunes would no longer recognize the iPad Air 5. So impossible to sync/backup/restore from backup. Absolutely insane hoops ending up with wiping the iPad, restoring from a luckily still-signed iOS 6.6.1 ISPW file using iAmazing, (iTunes didn’t see the ISPW), then finally able to restore from the iTunes iOS 16 backup. Which doesn’t reinstall all media files, that takes another batch of hours. Then updated to 16.7.
Nothing for me, but I haven’t tried everything yet. Seems to be a smooth update in general.
Some apps (banking/financial) are facing problems with ios17. It is mainly specific problems to the iPhone 12
It actually fixed my CCK which didn't work on previous version.
Went though quite a few apps tonight and nothing seemed amiss.
Haven't noticed any problems despite some initial weirdness with updateable apps not showing on the appstore page that normally shows that, but that issue resolved itself within minutes or hours. Apart from that, it's smooth sailing, but it's not a remotely interesting update for me so far, few if any features I care about, so I wouldn't particularly recommended updating to anyone who's feeling nervous about it.
Yeah honestly after looking at different videos of the new features nothing about IPad OS17 really moves me either, the only reason I’m considering it is because I went to buy an app the other day and I got a message saying I needed to be on OS17 to buy it, I don’t remember what app it was but I’m guessing Apple might come out with an update for Logic Pro that forces us to update to 17 lol
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I’m still on the fence as of now but if I do update and run into any issues with apps I’ll list them for others , thanks again 🙏
someone did the 16.7 update? anything not working?
I haven’t updated yet and last night after I was done jamming it seemed like my iPhone quite charging with the camera kit adapter thing. Moved some stuff around, unplugged and plugged back in. Might have to update now barring anything else I might’ve missed. Didn’t have much time when I was done, but I switched to the iPad and it appeared to be charging. So possible bug now for iPhone in this scenario if you don’t update, not 100% yet though.
Logic pro Alchemy synth. If you try to use the transform pad (morphing) LP quits unexpectedly. I’ve been struggling with this issue since I updated to 17.
Did they Fix being able to actually edit the list for what to open stuff in? Example: click on a sample i want to open in Beatmaker 3, dumb shit asks Do you want to open it in Other music app, other music app., PDF Editor, SomeOtherUselessApp ? And "edit" just lets you delete one of their dumb choices, but not add in what you want.

This is something worth reporting to Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/logic-pro/
Can you stay on iOS 16 indefinitely if you want ? Like I know it sounds stupid but I found apps won’t work without internet or stuff like that, and I was just curious if like on macOS you can stay on the Same OS X 13 Ventura ? And can you stay on iPadOS/os 16 ? Or will it eventually like automatically download and Install when online?
I’m new to macOS so please pardon my ignorance (I just found some update happen on their own even when I didn’t have automatically download or install on)
Sure you can, you just won’t be able to get new apps that require you to be on IPad OS17 or newer or update apps that require you to be on IPad OS17 or newer. As long as you don’t have automatic updates enabled on your IPad it won’t update unless you do it manually
You can disable automatic updates and delay major version updates indefinitely this way. Eventually updates to some apps will stop being available and eventually you'll miss out on security fixes, but in the short to medium-term I believe that apple will keep shipping critical security updates for iOS 16 for a while, in order to support machines that can't run iOS 17. Same for macOS. I think that by default even if you have automatic updates turned on, you have to explicitly tell it to do a major OS version upgrade.
Oh right duh. I forgot about that major caveat, meaning some newer apps require current iOS
Ok thank you guys
I get the following behaviour in Notes. Is this a bug or just a stupid implementation which makes zero sense to me? If I have a long note, and scroll down the note, so that the beginning of the note is not visible, then switch to another app, when I come back, the note has lost its position and has reset itself to the beginning, so I need to scroll manually to resume my previous reading position. I think I remember this happens in other apps too, but am not sure. Either way, I find it highly annoying.
Is that new though? I think I remember that happening before.
(I just tried it and can’t reproduce that, so maybe it is specific to certain notes?)
Hey @Gavinski Ive been holding off because of the issue you mentioned about the AUBE keyboard. Has that gotten corrected do you know? I’m really dependent on the AUBE keyboard at this point lol.
Yes, I already reported it the next day I faced the issue, but got no feedback. Ok I didn’t really expect any response from Apple but at least I thought the issue is so serious that they fix it quickly. Seems that’s not happening either.
They won't usually respond to bug reports. I have actually managed to have their tech people contact me directly in the past for some serious issues (which have since been fixed) in GarageBand.
That resolved itself thank god.not sure if it was because of a restart or what but I checked again just now and the aube keyboard is working fine for me
Does it happen if Notes is the only app running and then you switch to another fairly light resource app such as Safari (without a million tabs open).
The reason I'm asking is I'm speculating that maybe Notes is being completely unloaded from memory due to iOS deciding other apps need that memory. This would be especially likely for a very large note. What I'm saying is maybe Notes is effectively restarting and Apple doesn't save the current reading position when it does.
I'm a habitual app and Safari tab closer from my old Windows days, but most people aren't used to doing this. I know every time my wife starts to curse weird behavior on her iPad that I find a zillion things open. As soon as I clean things up life goes back to normal until next time.
That’s super annoying. Is background refresh turned on for the notes app in your settings? I don’t even know if the notes app has background refresh but may be worth it to check.
Haha, tbh Wim I always have tons of tabs in my browsers etc and a fair few apps open. But I just checked again now and - with the same note - that behaviour is no longer happening. Everything about my setup is the same as when I posted about this earlier, have not restarted the ipad or anything
@HotStrange good idea, though I just checked and didn’t see any background refresh setting. I did however realise that, damn, the notes app has a LOT of settings lol
My guess is iOS just decided to unload some other resource than Notes so that now Notes isn't restarting. There's no perceivable logic to what iOS decides to unload. Cleanup is always a good thing to avoid weirdness like that. Especially when you use music apps and lots of tabs in Safari. Both tie up lots of memory.
Reminds me of when Books would decide to randomly delete my ebooks and then only allow me to redownload them on WiFi. ItIt drove me mad, switched to Google play books.
Yeah Notes is surprisingly capable and yet I only use it for the bare necessities lol. Background refresh can be so frustrating sometimes. The App Store app is horrible about that but I always forget to turn refresh off 😅
