Did IPad OS17 break anything?

  • ipadOS 16.7 broke my appstore on my ipad pro m1. I had the "cannot connect to app store" notification all the time. I was able to update apps but couldn't search for new ones. I didn't actually want to download/purchase anything but it was annoying me. For two days I tried various methods which I found descriptions of on the internet and I was already about to install 17, which would maybe solve the problem. But yesterday I tried "reset all settings" and after a while the app store worked. The downside is that I had to re-set a lot of settings. So 17 will wait a while yet.

I get the following behaviour in Notes. Is this a bug or just a stupid implementation which makes zero sense to me? If I have a long note, and scroll down the note, so that the beginning of the note is not visible, then switch to another app, when I come back, the note has lost its position and has reset itself to the beginning, so I need to scroll manually to resume my previous reading position. I think I remember this happens in other apps too, but am not sure. Either way, I find it highly annoying.

I tried with all my iOS devices, and I can’t replicate that behavior. I’m using Notes on a daily basis. If that happens to me, I will stop using Notes all together. Soon, I'm transferring everything to Obsidian anyway. 😅

Hey @Gavinski Ive been holding off because of the issue you mentioned about the AUBE keyboard. Has that gotten corrected do you know? I’m really dependent on the AUBE keyboard at this point lol.

That resolved itself thank god.not sure if it was because of a restart or what but I checked again just now and the aube keyboard is working fine for me

    Thank you so much!!

Does it happen if Notes is the only app running and then you switch to another fairly light resource app such as Safari (without a million tabs open).

The reason I'm asking is I'm speculating that maybe Notes is being completely unloaded from memory due to iOS deciding other apps need that memory. This would be especially likely for a very large note. What I'm saying is maybe Notes is effectively restarting and Apple doesn't save the current reading position when it does.

I'm a habitual app and Safari tab closer from my old Windows days, but most people aren't used to doing this. I know every time my wife starts to curse weird behavior on her iPad that I find a zillion things open. As soon as I clean things up life goes back to normal until next time.

Haha, tbh Wim I always have tons of tabs in my browsers etc and a fair few apps open. But I just checked again now and - with the same note - that behaviour is no longer happening. Everything about my setup is the same as when I posted about this earlier, have not restarted the ipad or anything

@HotStrange good idea, though I just checked and didn’t see any background refresh setting. I did however realise that, damn, the notes app has a LOT of settings lol

Yeah Notes is surprisingly capable and yet I only use it for the bare necessities lol. Background refresh can be so frustrating sometimes. The App Store app is horrible about that but I always forget to turn refresh off 😅

What’s driving me mad is that you still can’t add things manually to the share sheet - I have a preset pack someone made for Tera Pro that I can’t get into Tera because it just won’t show up in the share sheet no matter what I try. Apple need to fix this, it’s fucking outrageous - excuse the swearing but I really feel strongly about this. In the meantime, given that the share system cannot be trusted to work reliably, all devs should really made sure their apps have internal systems for bulk and individual import and export of files. I have asked Harry from Virsyn to add this to Tera Pro but it seems it is not high up his priority list. If anyone else has run into this problem they might want to ask him to move it up his list a bit.

Haven't noticed any problems despite some initial weirdness with updateable apps not showing on the appstore page that normally shows that, but that issue resolved itself within minutes or hours. Apart from that, it's smooth sailing, but it's not a remotely interesting update for me so far, few if any features I care about, so I wouldn't particularly recommended updating to anyone who's feeling nervous about it.

Yea sometimes I have to pull down on the app update screen a few times to refresh it to catch any missing updates. I’m on 16.6.1 on iPad, 16.7 on iPhone 13 Pro. Will be going to 17 any day now.

I have had to do that for quite a few versions over time. I have never been able to figure out why it sometimes shows updates and other times needs to be refreshed.

You mean when you long press and and hit share to app samples, patches, etc to other apps correct? If so I agree 1000% it’s infuriating. And hard to believe that’s hasn’t been implemented yet. It’s probably one of the biggest pet peeves of iOS I have.

Not sure if the following describes what you're experiencing here ... This may be a memory limitation issue.

I often have a certain very long Google Document open (you mention your note is long) on my iPad Pro 2017 (I think you have an iPad Pro 2018 or used to, so maybe similar amount of memory?). I switch to another app to grab an image, or copy text, and then return to the Google Document, and it's been closed down and I'm back at the document selection screen in Google Docs.

On shorter Google Docs this almost never happens - it's directly related to the length of the document, or more partiuclarly, how much memory it occupies, as it contains quite a few images.

Does it happen with a shorter note e.g. 2 or 3 screens worth?

I’ll just throw this out there… I hope no one is offended. I’m obviously a big apple fan, especially for music making. I have a love/annoyed relationship with apple, lol. I wanted to believe Logic and a few other things were starting to turn the tide a little bit, and maybe apple was finally giving iOS musicians a little more consideration when making certain decisions. The truth is their revenue was down in certain areas so to continue to make more money, they wanted a share of the very huge subscription service market. So it wasn’t the hat tip to iOS musicians I hoped, just a way for them to generate more profit.

I watched this video about their elaborate corporate tax schemes they use to pay nothing in taxes and actually make money in the process. I don’t know why I’m sharing this here it just seemed like it fit.

    Here’s the video by Vice.

Apple is narrow focused, but more than that they’re arrogant. And we, as customers, seldom take the time to report problems.

Face it, no way are we any way typical customers. Engineers almost always make assumptions about the maximum range of values to expect for any variables and data structures, and size them somewhere they think is reasonable. It's deeply engrained to think things like "No way someone will have more than 200 apps that could import wav files", and size a variable to 256 maximum, thinking that should be plenty. Then because they're Apple and because they know everything, never have it cross their minds to revisit that. On our side we think "Surely they have to realize this problem and are working on a fix," when they don't have a clue because hardly anyone out of their gazillions of users take the time to actually report such a problem.

That’s true and while I definitely do agreed, the fact that they’ve now released Logic Pro tells me they have to be well aware of the progress of music making on iOS and should be aware or taking that into account when it comes to things like these. Then again like you said, they’re arrogant about these things. Maybe we all need to start pestering them relentlessly lol

It’s worse than I’d feared. Just upgraded to a new iPad, which insisted on going to 17 during setup.

    Midiflex:
It sees all four outputs on the MidiFlex, but sends the data that should go to 3 and 4 to 1 and 2.

Weirdly, if I try to use the MidiFlex as a thru box connected to my MOTU M4 interface, the data still doesn’t get through.

    Korg SQ-1:
Sends nothing at all to my Korg SQ-1, which was intended as a MIDI to CV converter as well as a sequencer. Not even clock. The data just doesn’t get sent.

    Korg NTS-1:
Same, no MIDI gets through from the iPad. However, MIDI in works from the NTS keyboard.

This is just rubbish. It all worked perfectly on my iPad 6 running 16.

I’ve tried connecting things directly to the Apple multiport adapter, it’s the same, so it’s not my Anker USB hub.

@os68ng are you connecting the MidiFlex through the Apple multiport adapter, or using a different USB connector?

Tried it with a simple usb-c to usb-a adaptor and also via my usb hub. Same result. I think is has something to do with the hybrid configuration of two of the ports…

  • I'm seeing other glitches in the last iPadOS update, but none with my music apps so far.

TBH! Two out of four ports working beats my other kit, where the outgoing MIDI just disappears into a black hole. The whole thing is crazy, as the devices show up properly in AUM (and NS2), and can send MIDI into the iPad just fine. But nothing gets out to them.

The midi output enters singularity 🤣 In my case port 3 goes into port 1 and port 4 into port 2. Weird.

Same here. Just bizarre. I’ve been meaning to contact Apple Support, but preparations for Christmas and other mundane irritations have basically crowded that out for the moment.
