Beathawk - worth another demo?

The forum has a lot of strong opinions on things. I'm planning to create a video on BeatHawk and what I like about it and some tips about using it that I feel haven't been covered in other videos. There's a lot of competition out there for sample based apps like BeatHawk, so is there anything that you think I should cover specifically and alternatively, anything that would make it not relevant - for example another app that you think offers similar or better features at a better price?

  • My experience with beathawk is that samples change it's timbre too much so that's a no no for me, it is such a turn off to be playing a melody and one note sounds completely diferently, I just couldn't use it after that

Interesting. Was this with various samples that were part of the included sound packs, or with additional ones? The reason I ask is that I've noticed a wide variation in sample quality between packs and also that some of the newer ones (I compared a list that someone had put in a video from 2018 with today) sound a lot better to my ear.

  • BeatHawk has quite a good choice of samples imo and they still do their job for many.
Garageband with its free sound packs should be on the list too.
I'd also want to mention Gadget and its addons, not the least "Stockholm", the only REX/RX2 loop player on iOS.
Pure Synth Platinum is another interesting one.

Anyway, whenever I wanted a very specific instrument or sound, I had to sample it on my own because the choice of samples on iOS is somewhat limited.

  • I will also add that this piece uses the string packs available in Beathawk.

  • Definitely worth another look. I think some sample packs were made dry on purpose to fit in a mix better. Better mixes means "thinner/dryer" sounds, whereas those "phat" sounds tend to overpower a mix and make it muddy.

    100% agreed.

Cheers mate. The acoustic instruments in this track...

...came from the "Asia" pack in Beathawk as an AUv3.

As a guitarist I would appreciate any review focused to show pros/cons of "real" instruments like drums/percussion, piano, bass, woodwinds and strings. I'm still hesitating what AUv3 workhorse to buy for my first iPad. BeatHawk and Pure Sound Platinum are my favorites for now.

  • I forgot I had BeatHawk

  • I still use BeatHawk pretty extensively as a sound source. I think their drum sounds are quite powerful compared to a lot of other options and don't require much if any additional processing to make them hit hard. I actually wish they had more sound sets including modern drum sounds (a lot of what they have are rather dated and focused on classic/80's/90's/acoustic drum sounds) and include more useful basic loops for various styles. Man, what I wouldn't give for a cinematic drum pack from UVI.

Another great thing about it is that it runs (and runs well) on an iPhone. Many of my other go-to AUv3 drum apps (e.g. Playbeat 3, Splat-to-Clat) will only run on iPad so it's nice to have BeatHawk (along with FAC Drumkit) there for me.

On the downside, on some of my devices, I have experienced sound pack installations that seem to hang and are difficult to resolve.

  • love the electric basses in Beathawk, don’t like the UI though...

  • Bebot loves Beathawk.

  • I love the song arranger in Beathawk , one of the best on IPad OS imo but I’ve moved on…it has potential but I don’t see myself going back to it. If you could load auv3 instruments into it that would definitely make me take another look at it but I don’t see that ever happening. I tried using it as an auv3 inside other Daws but there was always a problem with it remembering what sounds I used so I stopped trying to use it as an auv3.

I've had that same problem. A right proper pain in the bum. I wish UVI would fix that, but doesn't seem like Beathawk will be updated any further sadly outside of maintenance.

100%. I’ve always thought the drums in Beathawk fit way better in a mix than some others. Klevgrands percussion apps as well.

  • I love Beathawk. The groovebox market on iOS has really taken off over the years and I think it got left behind a bit unfortunately. Imo, its real strength is as an instrument. It’s internal sample packs are incredible and it works great as a drum machine, piano, etc.

Wait ... I thought that general rule is that AUv3 state is saved automatically when host preset/patch/project is saved. So it doesn't work in case of BeatHawk? I had intended to use BeatHawk mainly as a sound module in Loopy Pro or GarageBand.

    What’s your issues with Beathawk?

  • edited September 2023

What I don't understand in Beathawk, when I load the whole acoustic drum kit in one instance, I don't have access to the individual samples (like pitch/pan/level/reverb/delay). When I load individual drum samples to the pads, it is possible

Maybe an user error? I tried everything as far as I know.

I don’t think it’s user error. Unless it’s an error on my part as well. I think it’s done that way so you can pick and choose which samples from which packs you want. Maybe someone else can weigh in.

Well it’s been years since I’ve stopped using it, maybe they’ve fixed it since then but at the time I had to remember what I used and reload the kit, I think I would save a song in Beathawk and name it the same title as the song in the Daw I was using but at the end of the day it was just a big pita. But again, I really liked the arranger and if I could load auv3 instruments inside it I definitely would have used it a lot more, and also at the time I was on an IPad Air 2 with 128 gb of space so I wasn’t trying to fill it with samples from Beathawk. I bought a few iap’s and they sounded great but I ended up deleting it.

  • Crazy idea. If everyone in this thread would send feedback to the developer about Beathawk auv3 not remembering what was previously loaded. Maybe we could get a update. It worked in other threads

  • Beathawk and the quality of UVI samples make me consider their Falcon. It just depends on what direction Apple will take with Logic Pro. 😅

-The app is never far from those small bugs
Audition 10 samples , there will be an issue with one . Not a rock steady app

    • customer service very slow
    • Not so great UI/editor . In summary, take a long time to edit
    • Automation not smooth , example simple panning….
    • State saving , not so great in Audiobus/aum
    • Does not play well with midi for other apps, not a team player app , for lack of a better word

This is not to say , you can’t get good results , but the fun quotient/experience of using this app was not enjoyable for me. Also editing was time consuming , hence I regret buying all those packs

The only feature I used a lot was using the set in ableton

As for the original question, I loved Korg Gadget so much I even brought the Mac version.

    +1

  • I genuinely struggle with the work flow for this app.

  • Thanks everyone for the helpful comments so far. I'm going to use this to inform the video that I'm putting together and also my communication with UVI. I got a response from their marketing department and they told me to let them know when the video was posted, so we'll see if anything comes of that. I've only got a few of the sound expansion packs. There are 62 total right now (by my count), and it looks like about 23 of them were released sometime after July 2018, and the newer ones seem to have some better sounds. The last app update was on 9/1/22, so it's conceivable that they may still implement further updates, or at least fixes. I'd love to experiment with all of the packs and post some examples of them in use.
