Quantovox MS Continuum iOS Public Beta.

https://quantovox.com/pro-audio/products/mid-side-continuum/guide/

M/S Continuum extends the definition of mid/side encoding to create a smooth, continuous curve allowing in-between values and gradual changes.
The algorithm used is a true extension of the concept and doesn’t involve any cross-fading or other artificial constructs.

Complimentary pairs

Two M/S Continuum instances can be conveniently linked in a way that the second one cancels out the transformation, restoring the original sound. Once linked, the second plugin will automatically re-align if parameters are changed in the first one, without missing a single sample.

Between these two points, any number of audio effects can be inserted, all of which will receive the transformed signal instead of the original L/R one. This setup can be used in multiple ways: either to just turn any stereo plugin into a M/S one, or to modulate the stereo field of the wet signals (while keeping the dry signal intact) without the need for setting up additional routing, thus keeping the track neatly self-contained.

Ha-ha :) This would have been my question as well :)

  • Derrrrrrrrrr…. ?

This was originally developed for the desktop, and has a lot in common with True Pan. There was one remark on the forum that sometimes the 360-degree full rotation is too much, and incidentally this plugin may fill that gap.

But... for something fun and wholesome, load a delay-based effect between two linked pre/post instances, and fire up the LFO.

  • so you just insert the second one untouched?

No, you need to configure them to be in the same group.
If you do the PRE one first, and the POST one next, you don't need to manually set anything else.

If the setup is good, the second plugin's controls should disappear, and the group number will be green everywhere it's shown.

After setting up, you can focus on the first plugin exclusively for tweaking the effect.

  • Not at all, but i think i read somewhere it compares to "truepan" so i guess it's something to do with panning. My best uneducated guess, it pans to left or right, but not all the way to the left/right, half way, "mid" left/right?? It's okay, i don't need to understand everything, just a curious mofo

Probably going to be clear now:

The plugin shown offers you two stereo settings, L/R and M/S. It's a switch.
With M/S Continuum, you can turn that switch into a fader.
Fun and wholesome things may sometimes happen when you modulate that fader.
And you can use it as an effect on its own, not in conjunction with another plugin, as per the above.

Before September 25, there was absolutely no real way to select any setting besides those two.

Yes, it shares True Pan's property of not squashing the stereo image when "hard panning", though in a sense it does go "all the way", which is demonstrated when you use a centered or mono input. True Pan has an extended range, M/S Continuum works between L/R, more akin to a regular pan control - as far as the controls are concerned.

The head-scratching bit is what on Earth does panning have to do with M/S conversion? Well it turns out the two are equivalent, if you use True Pan's algorithm.

The depicted factory preset, called "Vintage, yet not" is configured for M/S mode. It does not play ball with mono sounds, plus a full-on M/S mode is something that doesn't always sound good in stereo.
If you switch to L/R, the effect changes radically. But you can now try an intermediate setting for what it's worth.

  • Is there a video one could hear this in? My limited understanding is that this is panning, for...things that don't usually pan well? Either way, may it lead to fun stuff for the users

  • its really funny, because there's no way to explain that simple.

There will be videos at one point... no hard promises on the timeline though :|

Regarding panning, one everyday use case is that you can pan fully reverbed sounds (can be super useful if you don't have control over the source material, like in Apple Loops), without losing a bit of audio quality or stereo width.

But sometimes other panning methods are better. If there is a special balance between Mid and Side, you will not perceive the position shift - in very much the same way as you wouldn't be able to tell if a circle is rotated or not. Logic Pro's Steinway Grand is very specially balanced this way (though not the Yamaha one).

Cheers. Doubtless there will be some very interesting demos coming up around release.

On the desktop thread there was a request for sound demos, but since we're obviously going to select the best sounding ones, maybe that would be missing the point of why we're all here in this open beta... So will have to think a bit about that.

As long as it's not labeled or strongly suggestive of being a product review, anything you deem interesting enough to share here is fine with us.

It would be the opposite if anything lol just a run of the mill screen recording. That’s also if I figure it out enough and get the time. Weddings this weekend so it’s a busy week but that doesn’t stop me from making music 😂😅

Busy times... We're also working on 2 plugins and some updates simultaneously right now.
Though things may speed up suddenly for this plugin in the next 3-4 days, maybe including some videos as well.

  • I’ve been playing around with it for the past couple of days and it’s really cool.
It’s stable on my iphone except it comes up with “STANDALONE” when as an auv3.
I don’t know if that’s intentional or not other than that it’s nice for
those who enjoy playing with stereo imaging and more.

Was actually hoping someone would post the solution to the standalone question, but you guys seem to have way too much fun over there in the ambient thread instead :D.

So that's intentional, and refers to this from the user's manual (use the mode switch or the group selector to switch between them):

The plugin can be used in two ways:

    • In standalone mode, as a width-preserving panning effect, or a special modulation effect for spatially balanced sounds
    • In paired mode, allowing other effects to operate anywhere between L/R and M/S modes, with modulation options available

In the meantime, we've had some ideas to reduce the number of taps even further for setting up paired instances. But can get kind of tricky and may interfere with more elaborate workflows of power users.

One idea is the following workflow (requires 1 extra tap. Right now, with automatic mode selection, you need 4 extra taps):
    1. Place the first plugin, and press the MODE switch. A new group will be allocated and set, and the plugin is placed into PRE mode from STANDALONE one
    2. Place the second plugin. The plugin will automatically configure it to be the POST plugin with the correct group setting, recognizing the currently pending setup. But will not work if you place several PRE instances without pairing them with their POST counterparts first.

This can be added post-release, so feedback is not absolutely vital at this point, but of course would benefit everyone to have the best experience from day 1.

So for mode #2 you had have to add them all on a row as you need them right? So 1 pre, then 1 post, etc instead of multiple pre’s first and then adding the post modules after?

Yes, in the proposed workflow for automatic configuration.

I think I may like that implementation better. But as far as option one, once you press MODE and add the second AU, it will be automatically paired?

Currently, the quickest way to pair, is to
    1. add the plugins (you're free to add them in any order, at any step, including for multiple tracks / pairs)
    2. first plugin: tap on the group selector, and pick a free group
    3. second plugin: tap on the group selector, and pick the same group. As an aid, the incomplete group will be highlighted, so it's completely effortless.

In this workflow, there is no need to touch the MODE button at all.

You can do this simultaneously with multiple tracks, but you won't have the benefit at the POST stage to clearly see the group being set up, as multiple groups will be highlighted, so it won't be a completely mentally effortless step.
