nooo. heathens, the lot of y’all. lol idk Loopy is just such a perfect ipad app, i don’t really see the point of the mac version, but i hope it makes Michael a bunch of money and expands Loopy’s base.
My impression is the majority of users do all they can to not touch the screen by mapping hardware controllers to do as much as possible. That could be a skewed impression because I'm only going by the online questions and discussions, and on-screen control would most likely generate fewer questions.
But it does seem to be the case, so it's natural those not looking to interact with the screen anyway would lust for the additional processing power and stability of a Mac based version.
I'll beta test the heck out of it if/when I get added to that beta test group, but will have little to no use for it after that. I go creatively dead musically as soon as that desktop/notebook OS stares me in the face.
What are the options for User Event Input on a Mac:
Is the keyboard allow to be mapped to events? Like HOT KEYS, essentially. Interesting way to make a MacBook touchable out of the box.
I’m sure Bluetooth devices are easy to integrate and perfect for live work, IMHO… better than poking a lon a screen but real users might say it’s perfect if you get good at it.
Mouse and touch pads are what the typical Mac User likes… Whenever I open my MacBook I start poking the screen for the first few minutes wondering if the app I’m touching is hung up or crashed. A touch screen Mac Book would help… and nice if it had that flip around and lay flat like some of the tablet optional PC’s. Steve Jobs rolls over in his grave at the suggestion, I think. Maybe not.
iPad as an input device using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, that Apple interoperability API called IDAM (Inter-Device Audio and MIDI)… probably best connected over USB cabling with or without a HUB to add extra power for the iPad. Anyone using this now
between instances of DAW’s like LP (Logic Pro… acronym overload).
An outboard Audio gear that bridges various USB capable devices and solves the Master-Hourly Wage issues of USB in a multi-device world like the Metric Halo, apparently.
Loopy Pro has typing keyboard support right out of the box - on iOS too.
Touch screen is great for a lot of things, but a dodgy proposition when performing. It was cool to see Inkie doing a full complex set using just Loopy and the touch screen. Pretty tough for guitar players though. A foot switch is extremely helpful. I guess those weird keyboard players who use both hands at the same time would feel the same.
How do they do that anyway? It just seems so wrong.
I could go for a touchscreen Mac. It'd probably cost a fortune though.
A lot of performers stick to midi controllers for interacting with loopy: pedals, keyboards. Lsunchpadd, MFTs, etc
How many external hardware buttons, Pads, etc do you think make sense for Loopy? Just a general estimate would be useful to me starting out.
I know the answer to all questions is “It depends” but still would an 8 button pedal board prove itself over a 4 button BlueBoard? How about hardware quality of the switches… I would pay more to avoid collecting several cheap ones on the way
to something the best loopers use.
You can get a lot of mileage out of just four buttons with Loopy Pro because of its ability to switch "profiles" so that buttons can do different things based on context. That can take significant setup and understanding of how things work. More buttons are generally better.
MorningStar MC8 Pro is kind of awesome. Eight switches, 128 banks, 3 pages per bank, 8 presets per page, for 3,072 presets total.
TBH, 4 foot switches is about all I can keep track of while playing, and all I really need. I have two 4 switch pedals and have yet to hook them up at the same time.
Keyboard players might prefer lotsa knobs or faders on a key bed over foot switches.
It is entirely a matter of preference. Some like to use a small number of pedals/switches (4 or less) and some like having a lot of pedals (8 or more)
Thinking about your question some more @McD - starting off with a foot switch might be a bit bass-ackwards.
Generally it's easier to get along with foot switches and midi mapping in general if you first set up widgets to do what you want the switches to do, then map the midi messages to activate those widgets. It's a whole lot easier to set up, debug, and test widgets than it is to manage direct bindings, imo.
The intensive work is setting up your workflow and what you want to accomplish eventually with external controllers. Picking the best controller for that is easier once you have more than a vague idea what you need to do.
I went ahead and purchased th M-Wave Chocolate 4 button Bluetooth switch and a Nectar expression pedal. I hate cables and prefer a device that can be re-charged to save the cost of batteries.
Did you get the Chocolate or the newer Chocolate +?
So we're actually getting closer to this being a thing?
Awesome.
It's still gonna be a good while @greatestlengths. But yes, it is getting closer.
It's all good.
How far off is the Windows version?
Just checking in on this thread. @wim - any intel or updates that you can share? I'm so keen to have the Mac version!
nope. no new news. I know it's being worked on, that's all.
Michael is hard at work on it. There won't be any timeline or status updates till release is imminent...though Michael might show some development he is excited about along the way. Loopy 2.0 took us longer than our various estimates and re-estimates. So, we are trying not to guess when we will be done.
Hi , whenever a BETA version of Loopy Pro for MACOS is ready for wider testing I would very much like to be a tester thanks. Using MacBook Air M1 16MB and have TESTFLIGHT installed. Cheers Erik
Not sure this is even on the map. No news is bad news. It used to be, but gone dark it looks like
Michael is working away diligently.
"There is a perennial nobleness, and even sacredness, in work. Were he never so benighted, forgetful of his high calling, there is always hope in a man that actually and earnestly works: in idleness alone there is perpetual despair." —Thomas Carlyle
I just had to say … somehow, I always recognise one of your posts before I check the name. They always make me smile. Well done, and thanks.
it’ll be either @JohnnyGoodyear or Sam Pepys (did he ever have an account on here?)
Not that i need it but Mac and windows are American and i would like to see developers also pivoting away from American Big tech. I have to use the Ipad which is dedicated to music making so that not a real problem but i'm really making an effort to get away from American Big tech. Not a developer myself so i don't know if it is at all possible to develop for Linux?
