BASTL instruments OUTSIDIFY out now.

BASTL instruments just released their first app. I’ve been playing around with it this morning, having fun creating lots of noise. It’s basically a feedback creator with a built in loop player and recorder. Also creates IR files: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/outsidify/id6466588903

    You first 😂

  • One tip. Turn up the volume of your speaker for more feedback. Probably obvious to most.

Could be fun to load some of these into my Iridium…

  • Nice! although I feel this is also something you can build in AUM too but it's nice to have a dedicated thing. :)

  • 5.99 lmao for this..

I had the same reaction. Great price to simplify a task I do a lot of.

I don’t think $5.99 is a terrible price. The IR creator/export of any space anywhere is cool and I don’t mind paying for a cool app to support an, imo, really cool and forward thinking company.

Has anyone tried it yet? Thinking about taking the punt on it.

  • Uhhhh... interesting but.....
I need feedback, but not some random place; I need the kind you get when you turn your 78 custom Les Paul into a stack of Marshall stacks. SERIOUSLY, I'm looking for an app that I can 'trigger' and control by expression pedal and/or pitch and/or envelop filter to create a stage feedback sound.

If you’re willing to go desktop, Blue Cat AcouFiend does that.

NO WAY!!!!!....... this thing ROCKS!!! If there was one for iOS, they've just GOT my $$ already

I don’t know if the Softube one has improved since I last heard a demo of it, but theirs really fell short compared to the Blue Cat one (which I own as it is fantastic).

bought it to support. played with it, pretty dissatisfied. I would expect much more from them. I have a few of their gadgets, and love them, but this app is weakkkkk. this is like some 2014 level iphone app. i got some cool drones after resampling over and over and pitching down and down and down, but yah, i hope this is just them testing the waters of ios app building and they come knock us over the head..

editing to add, i did make some ir's with it as well. the quality of the mic is just meh,, so your ir's are just meh as well. i did my oven, bathroom, piggy bank, etc. They are useable for lofi and weird tone shaping, but nothing incredible. still cool.

    Good review, nice one 🙌

  • adding more,, this app does have a lot of potential. If they put an effect section in the feedback loop, with various effects, beat repeaters, bit crushers, verb, filters etc, it would take this thing to an extremely cool level.

Where it stands now, its just meh. I dont think its worth 5.99. By all means, buy it and decide for yourself and prove me wrong, or buy it to support them and write them with suggestions like i plan on doing haha.

Thanks for the review. I kinda figured this was the case after being underwhelmed by the demo video posted above. Will probably buy to support because I love the company, and I hope that support will mean either more/better apps in the future or some massive improvements to this one.

I think we'd all agree that there's really a problem with many desktop devs not even realising that there's a whole fairly well developed ecosystem on iOS of daws, Auv3s etc. You'd think companies would do the research but it seems sometimes they really just haven't done that. Not sure if that's the case here. But yes, that's an excellent suggestion. IOS musicians do need to let devs understand their needs and what is possible on the platform. It's important for several reasons.

    1. If desktop or hardware devs make things that are underwhelming for hardcore iOS users, they're missing out on potential sales to them. And / or risking bad reviews. So they may not bother making another foray into the iOS world and instead just go back to making their hardware, plugins, whatever. That's both our loss and theirs.

    2. It can leave other desktop musicians - who are often equally or even more ignorant - with the (totally wrong) impression that phones and ipads are just for novelty apps. This is damaging to the reputation of the platform. These people may in future ignore iOS releases completely. Again, that is both our loss and theirs.

So - whether they have researched the platform or not, it's fairly clear desktop or hardware devs making their first entry into iOS often don't understand it properly. Whether people feel a duty to support is up to them, but definitely anyone who finds a release underwhelming is actually benefitting the devs themselves by being honest about their disappointment, ideally by emailing them.

It is what is is, nothing wrong with an app aimed more at people who don't use iOS much as a main part of their workflow. There's a colorful tapestry of different production workflows out there and that's how it should be :)

Didn't know these guys are based in Brno, cool place! I visited last year and made an installation in the underground water reservoir there, wonder if they saw it.

  • I can dig this , as Long as they update and auv3 etc. it’s a start. I have faith if they look at some creative iOS apps and then they put their unique twist on it. Or go even more nuts like a digital castle!
    Cheers

💯 spot on with both points.

There’s lots of potential for this app, so I’m hoping they will look more into the ecosystem and make some updates accordingly. The IR creator is pretty cool and the app overall is a decent idea, so if they really go for it, they could have something super cool on their hands.

If they had some of their hardware on iOS I’d buy in heartbeat. An iOS Microgranny would be amazing as well. Or Kastle Drum.

  • yes to all of this, im glad it seems most of us are on the same page, and hoping to encourage them to look further into the ecosystem.

I did some more irs this morning, and got some fun stuff. I load them into ableton to trim and clean artefacts, and load them into abletons IR reverb which is very basic, but still a great ir loader. Once loaded you can adjust the decay and size which can lead to some very interesting and useable tones. super cool on drum breaks, but also great for adding interesting texture and color to synths and vocals.

Thanks for pointing that out. IR creation would be great, but I certainly wouldn’t want to just create IRS that are limited to lo-fi and “weird tone shaping”.

Cool! Have you tried loading any of them into iOS? THAFKNAR or something?

  • Any effects app can create IRs. What is special about what they’ve done?

For those that don’t know, you can create IRs by passing an impulse through an effects chain and recording the result. It works better with some effects than others. You can have fun with your favorite time modulators, resonators and eqs.

nothin special really. its just simplified / streamlined with a timer, so you can put it in your oven or whatever and capture that.
