Any effects app can create IRs. What is special about what they’ve done?

For those that don’t know, you can create IRs by passing an impulse through an effects chain and recording the result. It works better with some effects than others. You can have fun with your favorite time modulators, resonators and eqs.

I mean couldn’t the “nothing special” argument be made about almost any single app release? It’s hard to do anything genuinely novel at this point. It does seem streamlined and way easier to do here and the app as a whole is kinda doing its own thing.

  • Ah, very true. Just record anything and then load it in an IR loader. Yeah, was initially flip flopping about whether this app is cool or not but the more I think about it the more underwhelming it gets, really.

BTW @Slush , imo this is worthy of its own post in Creations 👍

  • Very intrigued by this, or maybe more specifically, creating IRs in general.

What's the best sound to use? As I understand it, the sound should be a quick and loud pop or clap type noise. If anyone has tips on this, please share.

A true impulse is a single maximum amplitude sample followed by silence. It will sound like a click.

You can create one in any audio editor that lets you edit at the sample level.

  • Hoping the lukewarm reception won’t discourage Bastl from further developing in the iOS ecosystem. Kinda disappointing.

I did see them tweet that they were number one in the US music category so they’re probably doing ok…

People are entitled to express their genuine sense of being underwhelmed if that’s what they feel. It’s Bastl’s job to do their research properly, not this forum’s job to coddle them. They’re big boys and they’ve been in the business a while.

That said, once I finally got to try this I liked it a lot, and I think many people here would enjoy it

Right, I don’t think anyone is saying otherwise. The whole situation is a bit disappointing is what I’m getting at. Somewhat negative reception, a slightly less than stellar app, etc. I’m just saying I hope the entire experience doesn’t make them go “ah well we tried” and then walk away. Only time will tell.

Ah, I get you, sorry for misunderstanding! Well, it seems reception has actually been OK, as mentioned above! They've done well in various appstores - they're still number 2 on the US music appstore chart and I imagine they're probably still number 1 in the Czech appstore. These guys have nearly 35k Insta followers, they have a lot of fans who will buy this and enjoy it.

I sent them an email about how good it would be to make auv3 apps, hopefully their next one will be auv3. They're aware of what auv3 is now at least, and of how much ios musicians care about it. They did mention though that they'd been working on this for 2 years, so it might be a while before another one comes out 😂

  • That's it, they know their audience, who are like them, e,g hardware enthusiasts and eurorack makers who won't be that interested in using ipads much. They also aren't a software focused company so these things are complimentary for them, so maybe they will release others but I wouldn't hold my breath :)

Whew if they spent 2 years on this I hope there’s some cool updates coming soon then 😂

I think the app seems great for what it is. Could definitely use some work but I don’t think they completely bombed it. I just got back from my honeymoon so I’m not really buying anything right now unless it’s something I just absolutely must have but I’ll probably get it in a couple weeks. Half to support a cool company and half because of the app itself.

Glad it’s doing well though! Hope this makes other more indie synth manufacturers think about coming to iOS. (Looking at you Dreadbox and Polyend).

Thanks! Been wondering when we would see more demos. Bought it the other night but haven’t been able to properly sit down with it yet.
