Recommend au drum synths

Hi all, been away for a while, concentrating on hardware, but have come to the realization that i prefer creating drums on ios, apart from the portability of course, inlove the modular nature of sticking the tons of au fx on individual channels and creating imaginative beats i wouldn’t have come up with otherwise.

Anyways, i have:
Brambos- all ruismakers
Seekbeats
Drambos
Klevgrand shakka and borsta
Synth drum kick
808 stuff
Koala
Patterning 1 (which seems to be broken on my ipad)

Blipbox seems cool, and cheap. Probably getting that. What else should i look at?

  • FAC Drumkit! it‘s highly customisable.
or Fractalbits for random kits and unusual sounds.

  • Blib Box is indeed a very cool one to grab.
    Thumb One is also interesting.

  • I’ll add Hammerhead and pure acid. There both great multi-out drum machines.

  • I'd add Sitala to the list.
Sure it's sample-based but it has enough tweaking tools to shape the sounds further.
Multi-Out can be enabled in the settings and pad will get a separate output.

  • Surprised no one yet said DrumComputer. Remarkable sound design power given the range of techniques (resonator (physical modeling), wavetable, sample, resynthesis) that can be mixed together.

BlipBox is really cool as is fractalbits

I also like Logic’s drum synths.

On iPad a couple of my old favourites are iElectribe and DM-2 but neither are auv3 but that does mean I tend to use them in standalone mode and just play. I love drum machines and just playing a drum machine on it’s own is something I really enjoy.

I also like making drums in synths like iMS20 and making drum kits with the samples.

One thing that lost me a load of time just jamming about was making a beat in iElectribe and then loading that into Logic and putting into the alchemy sampler/beat breaker.

  • BAM (when released) will definitely be a contender :)

Thanks. Had forgotten about fac. Looks great.
    Will be getting

    Can’t find thumbone. What developer?

Hammerhead wasn’t even on my radar. Looks cool. Thanks

Yup. Just checked it out. Looks great

Same. I am mostly just creating cool drum beats alone that i can chain and export to my Octatrack and be able to just be in a creative bubble while i sample in keys and guitar.

Although there are a lot of possibilities with DrumComputer I would like to be able to lock certain parameters when using the randomize function. Most of the time the resonator or resynthesis options don’t give me the results/inspiration I’m looking for. It’s the same with FAC Drumkit, being able to lock or exclude certain parameters with the randomize function i.m.o. could add something.

And I’ve said it before but will say it again: I still miss Wolfram Franke’s Stroke Machine (still have it running on an older iPad). The standard color scheme is pretty funky and it lacks a randomize function but I loved the sound and the options.

Besides the ones you already own I would go for:
    FAC Drumkit
    Fractal Bits
Bram Bos Hammerhead and Noir (since you already own the Ruismakers)

Depending on what you’re looking for:
Check out Goldbaby’s samples. He has some sales now and then. Excellent drumsamples that can be used with f.e. Koala, Hammerhead and Drambo. If you’ve got AudioLayer sometimes you can load the EXS programs (I know it works with the Urban Cookbook series).

I was stunned with Bram’s Hammerhead… after taking some time to explore it… It is a GEM..

Whereas, I never use randomize, my process is a mixture of deliberate IE knowing what I'm trying to dial in and thus glad for the power controls, and experimenting with those dials.

Got noir. Use it a lot. Hammerhead is a definite. Bram is good. That and fac are the 2 at the top of my list. Thanks

Two of my favorites right there.

  • yep, you don't need any more Drum apps when you got these.

  • Lots of good recommendations here. Some I haven’t seen yet that I like would be Triplex Kicker and Snapper, Synth Drum AU and ChowKick, Elastic Drums, Skiiid, 6X806, Axon 2, DrumLab, Perc Synth, Drum 80, Beat Scholar.

Tried to leave out samplers and preset players and focus on drum synthesis.

  • Another vote on Elastic Drums, Skiiid and Axon 2

  • Glitchscaper

  • Is anyone using SKIIID for iPhone? I’m finding the pad triggers a bit hit or miss? Sometimes pressing the pad fails to trigger at all in standalone. It works fine in auv3.

It was fun to use for a while, but it quickly became one of those apps that I couldn’t find a real use for.

  • I read many people saying Axon is so prone to crashing as to be unusable. Is that so?

I’ve wondered this many times. I don’t want to spend the money if it’s unstable and it hasn’t been updated in years.

I’ve never had any major issues with it. I think I’ve had a couples crashes in the time I’ve had it (which is 2 years or so at this point) but it’s definitely not unusable. For me anyway.

I think the problems stem from using multiple instances in one session. I think I remember reading that. I’ve never tried to push it though.

Can confirm. Takes multiple presses to trigger a sound in standalone mode.
