@Gavinski Thank you. Finally I purchased Orchestral Dreams instead of London. This feature is also there but in less presets and it is also more controllable. And I'm really satisfied with diversity of instruments in this IAP.

Enjoy! Yes some of these module packs are nice, no question, some less so, to my taste anyway. But I do very much like that they let you trial them for a week. Wish more devs offered that for their apps and iaps

Also Korg lets you use the trial period in the AUV3 so you can test how it’ll fit into your actual music and performance. There’s lots to complain about with Korg but I think they hit the nail on the head with that part.

True, true, good point also. Sugar Bytes apps don't allow that. But, I guess with Sugar Bytes, the upside is that there is no limit to the length of the demo, same with RRS. It's all too easy to download a module pack to trial, fiddle with it for a few mins, then never touch the demo again before it has expired 😂

I’ve been there. Download it and mess with it for a day only to remember it 7 days later and go to demo it again for it to be gone 😂

Both of those you mentioned are also great ideas for demo periods, imo. Sugar Bytes is great because functionally everything is there you just don’t have AUV3 or saving. And RRS just makes you reset the demo period so you can get a the full picture of the app.

Really wish more devs would look into doing demos and trial periods.

Couple questions for those that have tried it: how does it compare to the Orchestral Dreams pack? I don’t use these sounds often enough to justify both, but I definitely do want at least one them.

Also how do you reckon it compares to the GSI Mini Orchestra app? I’ve been eyeballing it as well and I like that you can control the levels of each part.

I was just going to suggest trying GSI Mini Orchestra. If you go to the Genuine Soundware website, you can download and try this software (demo versions) on your Windows or Mac computer. It is a very cool app because you can design your own orchestra. You can select the instruments that you want to include, set the triggering velocity for each, leverage aftertouch (if your keyboard has it), etc.

I don’t have a desktop so I can’t do the trial but the demos sound excellent. The only issue is, I don’t really use those kinds of sounds all that much so it’s hard to justify $20 vs the $6-$7 sale price in Module right now. How do the 2 compare in your opinion? Sound wise that is.

I would genuinely like to see people boycotting apps that don't offer it - but I don't see that happening realistically. It's insulting that people are expected to buy apps without demos. Imagine any dev trying to do that on desktop, almost no one would tolerate it.

Agreed. A lot of devs can get by on their pedigree alone but even then, I still think it should be required or highly incentivized. Especially for any app crossing that $15-$20 threshold.

  • I haven’t tried this new IAP yet, but honestly, nobody talks about the free VCSL and VPO3 free libraries included in AudioLayer which are really great and probably offer more setup options.

The GSI app is very well-designed and sounds very good. It is easy to select the instruments you want and the triggering velocities for each one. Unfortunately, I have never seen a sale on GSI apps, so you have to decide if these sounds are worth the price of the app.

I would also add that the Digital Sound Factory orchestral soundfont packs available to buy in Audio Evolution Mobile Studio are great value for money.

Now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve seen them do a sale either. Thanks for the replies though! For me, I’m not sure it’s worth the $20 but $7 for some great orchestral sounds in Module is good enough for the little I would use it.

You're right, those symphonic libraries for AudioLayer are good. My issue is AudioLayer has not been as stable as other VirSyn plugins on desktop recently. Occasionally causes projects to force quit.

AudioLayer works as an Audio Unit on macOS. You just need to download it using the macOS App Store. A number of VirSyn apps are cross-platform compatible and they are pay-once, get both platforms (and this includes in-app purchases).

I don’t have a desktop though, so I can only use the packs if they’re available on iOS as well. Cool that they’re cross platform though.

Sorry, I misread your comment. Yes, the same packs are available on both iOS and macOS. Check under Settings in the app, then there are free libraries AND paid XinematiX libraries.

  • The new London Symphonic Orchestra pack has the Switch Orchestra patches. These are undoubtedly a brilliant way of giving a huge range of instrumental choices. However, I can’t find a breakdown of what is mapped to what keys on the Korg website? Without this information I can’t help but feel the practical usefulness of this pack for composing is greatly reduced - does anyone know if it’s available anywhere?

This would be good info for me as well. So far my plan/approach has been to go though each patch, note by note, with MIDI tool’s MIDI Curve set to “fixed output” at different values to reverse engineer what’s really happening instead of bashing away & liking how it sounds “orchestral”.

That means for the lower velocity ones I need to bump up the volume with Drambo’s compressor, but it’s kind of a fun(?) treasure hunt.

Yeah, that do-it-yourself approach is of course there but I think I’m leaning more towards not purchasing the pack after the trial ends instead.

surprisingly goooooood, even very very good

  • Here's a tool designed by @wim for the velocity switching Korg module patches.
It also has the note ranges for "classical" stringed instruments to assist in composing.

It's not exactly specific to that IAP but it has some features made for it. It's just a tool to filter out notes that are out of range for orchestral instruments so that you don't play notes that don't exist on, say, a violin. It does have a velocity limiter button that's specific to the Module Orchestral Dreams IAP though. Designed by @Gravitas - I only wrote the script.

    ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTS RANGE LIMITER v1.0
This script allows limiting the midi note range to those of common orchestral instruments. Notes outside the range are rejected.

There is also the possibility to limit note velocity for some applications such as the Korg Orchestral Dreams sound pack which uses velocities over 111 for symphonic drums and below for “normal” string articulations. Tap the last pad to toggle this behavior and enable/disable the range setting knobs.

The Clarinet, Trumpet, and Double Bass pads have more than one sub-type. Tap additional times on the pad to toggle through

Script idea from Audiobus forum member @Gravitas 👏

Ahhhh! Like a pad based orchestration helper. That’s clever. I like that. This might tip me over the edge to get Mozaic finally.
    Thanks for the explanation!

  • After my 7-day trial, I can say this IAP is fantastic for the price. Very inspiring and you can get easily lost in cinematic ambient music. Worth the price, even if introductory sale has just ended.

  • By the way, have you noticed that Korg Module IAP introductory price always ends before your trial period ?? 😂
