Does anyone remember SynthScaper?

When I first started this IOS music thing, I was amazed at the variety of synthesizers, and how cheap they were. Twenty years ago the prospect of buying a new synth was a big deal and you spent a lot of time saving up and doing research. Now you can get one for less than lunch money. One of my first was SynthScaper. Like so many others, I bought it and forgot about it. I was reviewing some of my original purchases and rediscovered it the other day. I was pleased to see that Piano Motifs recognized it, so I put together this little piece. It’s mostly just some ambient patterns loosely strung together.

  • Good ambient track man. (I love Glitchscaper, so I’m assuming it’s the same dev….doesn’t get the attention or credit it deserves)

Thank you! I have so many of these that I completely forgot about. Should keep me busy for a while. Happy music making!

  • Cool nice work. SynthScaper LE is AUv3 (this full fat version is not) if you want to do more with mixers and DAWs.

Always wondered why he only made the LE version AU? Less coding I imagine?

Either way I only have that one but even it is great. Sounds fantastic and has just enough control to add a decent amount of variety. Especially if you buy on sale like I did.

On sale? Everything is on sale compared to what we once paid for this stuff. My last hardware keyboard was a Korg 01W. The beauty of IOS is that I can carry dozens of these in a backpack and take them to places I never would have dreamed of. Peace bro!

No doubt! I was hardware only before the iPad, then I went to a mixed setup, and now I’m mostly iPad for everything. Being able to open it up and have access to virtually any kinda synthesis or drum type available is fantastic 👍🏻

  • I only ever used it as standalone, but had a lot of fun with it. Shame it didn’t make it to AUv3.

  • @HotStrange @michael_m I would love to call my old booking agent and start gigging again. I have all my gear in the garage. The only problem is that I am in bed by 10:00. Thank God for the interweb.

Haha I work night shift so I’m up all night but I don’t really got anymore either. I do kinda miss banging on the drums live though

  • @Paulieworld Cool track! You'll be surprised all the stuff that Piano Motifs can drive, you can even send MIDI Out to a hardware synth, maybe even your Korg. Coincidentially I am working on a Piano Motifs tutorial that uses SynthScaper LE which, as mentioned here, is AUv3.

My Korg is in the garage. It’s nice and dry. Piano Motifs is a beautiful piece of work that you should be quite proud of. I wish I wrote it. Peace!

  • Amazing piece of music! :) Makes me want to try Synthscaper again, but only LE is AUv3? Ah, that's why screen record was invented. With Koala as my main workhorse, it's easy to screen record and import.

  • Synthscaper & LE are great! I haven’t gotten round to fully learn them, the interface is v.complex, but just going through the presets, there are some really kool sounds! 👍😺🔊

  • The invaluable @MarkH did a two part, two and a half hour deep dive into SynthScaper. It’s a wonderfully complex beast:

  • (Not to derail)

    But does anyone remember Shoom

Not only do I remember it but I still love and use it today.

  • What a beautiful swirl of sounds! Nice work

  • @jwmmakerofmusic @gdog @Philandering_Bastard @audiblevideo @jdp000 Synthscaper is truly a joy. It's even cool just to look at! I never really got too deep into it. There were just too many others. I was like a kid in a toy store. I haven't looked at Shoom for a long time, so I played around with it last night. I will need to give that one a spin. Thank you all for listening. Have a great week!

  • Sounds amazing @Paulieworld

I remember Synthscaper quite well. I don’t think I’ve ever used it in anything myself. I remember being lost at its UI, but it is a quite capable synth no doubt. Thanks for the reminder!

Yes @audiblevideo Shoom is amazing, and like @HotStrange was just fingering it up just the other day..

  • I used SynthScaper, too. Seems like a long time ago. That’s a beautiful track, Paul. I’m imagining you sitting in your chair making it. I used to pull all nighters in Istanbul. Now, instead of music I’m cooking Indian and Chinese food from recipes (a first). Instead of apps from Apple I’m buying spices off Amazon That’s what love will do to you.

If you don’t have it definitely check out the LE version. It’s an AUV3 and the UI is way more accessible.

I was quite intimidated the interface, but I liked the default sounds. That's what I used in this one. I forget the patch names, but they were pretty cool sounding. Have a good one!

I don't have the LE version, so I might check it out this weekend. There are so many great synth apps out there, and I still have about 250 Gb available space on my iPad!

Love is the greatest. I wish it for everyone. It's like wine in that the good stuff just gets better and better. We found a movie that we both want to see and have a "hot date" for the Saturday matinee. I can't wait! (he says as he rubs his hands in glee) It's a shame that youth has to be wasted on young people. Best wishes for both of you.

Nice. Whatever it is, I hope it brings you happiness!

As a matter of fact, I don’t have that one. At only $4.99, I might have to snag that right now!

Wow, I was just looking at his “SoundScaper” app; talk about an intimidating interface!

  • For actual sound design in the most literal sense, SynthScaper has to be the most underrated and powerful sound tool on iOS. I can see it easily a tool of choice for cinema soundtracks and effects design.

I wish Igor would do a macOS version.

I’m not gonna lie though… if I haven’t used the interface in a while, I have to start out lost again. ;)

Whew I only have 25 lol but I’m upgrading to a 1 tb next month luckily. Lemme know how you like it! It sounds absolutely wonderful, imo.

It’s kinda overlooked at times I think but it’s really underrated for the price. Not a ton of tweaking but enough to still add a lot of variety. Lemme know if you end up getting/liking it!

  • This song did it for me, it was definitely one of the best I heard from you. It brings so many futuristic images to mind when I listen to it. I had a great experience. Thank you for sharing. 🤩

Nice track, @Paulieworld. Well done. I forgot about SynthScaper.

Those Korg 01W were built well. Mine survived getting dropped down an orchestra pit. The corner got cracked but it still played fine. What it didn’t survive was my financial downturn, had to sell it. Regret.

    Love your song posts.
