I tried a different workflow with this. I just started coming up with assorted 4, 8, and 16 bar bits in Dm at 93bpm. As I added parts, I muted everything prior except the most recent bit. It’s sort of like the rumor game where people sit in a circle and whisper to the the next person, but change it slightly. When I had about 25 tracks, I just started dragging then onto the timeline. Most of the pieces were just MIDI phrases created in Piano Motifs or the piano roll, and assorted loops that I had in my library of “stuff”. The highlight was, in my opinion, the guitar part. That came from the Session Band Soul, Jazz, Funk package. I’m sure many would consider this to be cheating. I see it as hiring a session player and having him play until I heard something that I liked. 25 years ago, I would have considered all of this stuff to be cheating. But that was then, this is now.

I really like it. Calming vibes. I like the guitar for sure. Nice work. I moved from linear workflow DAWs a few years ago and do clip-based in Drambo and others now. I don’t know why but for me the clip based approach leads to more creativity.

My first was Texture by Roger Powell, Todd Rundgren’s keyboard player. That was back in the DOS days. Lots of ctrl-this and alt-that. I actually talked to him on the phone once. Cool dude. When Windows came out I went with Cakewalk and Sonar. In 2004 I stopped making music. Long, sad story. Anyway, I just like the linear approach. I’m old school. Actually, I just call it “school”. Thanks for listening.

I like the way the drums and bass sound on this one. Is there a phaser on the bass? I enjoyed it very much.

Honestly, I don’t remember. Probably. I had a few cool, refreshing beverages throughout the whole thing. Thanks for listening. Have a good one.

Thanks for disclosing your process. You keep leading me to new resources like Looperman. Have you invested in Quartet 1 and/or 2 from the SessionBand folks. It generates backing tracks for standards but costs extra to split out the parts as stems.

I used it to practice my GeoShred soloing:

    https://on.soundcloud.com/MNqYf

I’d never produce a solo like that on a flute or a midi keyboard. GeoShred lays out the notes so you can play with more intervals that the keyboard exposes to a novice or a flute fingering chart. Cheating = shortcut to quality avoiding years of required muscle memory. I’m too old to drill scales and patterns… it’s called play.

Absolutely beautiful. I think I saw Thad and Mel at the Jazz Showcase many, many years ago. What a great venue for Jazz. I do remember one night I sat directly in front of Art Blakey, with my big feet literally in his kick drum. He looked at me and said, what are you looking at, white boy?

I don’t mean to bump my old stuff, but these were done with Texture, an 01W, and a 4 track. All of these were from the late 90s, but it ain’t half bad considering what we had to work with at the time.

The next few tracks feature a killer guitar player named Tony Iovino. He dubbed his parts over the base tracks and I dubbed the keys. We were stoned to the bone. BTW, I gave that shit up years ago.

Of course just kidding. They sound great!

This coming from someone that hasn’t given up that sh1t and enjoys the crap out of smoking a joint and making music. How good my music is, well, it’s subjective. My mom says it sounds great. 🤣

It’s legal here now. I did some toking for a while, but it didn’t do it for me. My favorite is a lowball tumbler, 4 ice cubes, a shot of vodka, and top it off with tap water. Cool and refreshing. Peace bro!

  • It’s great to hear from your catalog. The production values are excellent. I love that “James Bond” like use of the Major 7th on the end section of “Iceland”. 7th’s, 9ths all have this power to create tension that just demands/expects/anticipates resolution.

“Rise and Shine” is smoking hot… the groove is infectious. Great solos.

“Cydonia” I dig the repeating pentatonic lick… like a Gamelan orchestra or Chinese Opera loop. Tony can play, for sure.

“Saravasti” Yeah, John McLaughlin like “Mahavishnu Orchestra” odd meter theme. Tasty. Billy Cobham like drum fills.
I saw him with George Duke and it was something of a let down after the high-watt Mahavishnu years. They played some
pretty tame lounge bebop jazz for an hour interspersed with George doing some Zappa inspired scatalogical humor.

I have alaways loved that cymbal bell just banging out on the off beat. That was one of my favorite goto’s in my bar band years
    as a singing drummer.

That was really good music… lot’s of resonances with some amazing music. All on a Teac 4 Track. Wow.

Thanks bud. I have many more but they are from the days I produced on Mac. I had a whole bunch of them on SoundCloud but I got scammed on there and completely deleted everything I had on social media. I actually deleted my accounts. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I completely stopped producing for about a year.

The iPad brought me back to life.

Thank you for the encouragement. I will definitely be posting more going forward.

  • Good stuff! I’ve never looked into the session apps much but it sounds really good here! Cool idea for a workflow as well. Which DAW/Timeline are you using?

  • Cool track, we have a few tings in common regarding drugs, they don't do it for me either, anymore. I do include alcohol in that statement though and I really love that it's pretty much out of my life (I can drink I just don't want to). Only thing I have left is vaping (just tobacco taste and low content nicotine) fittingly enough to this song😁

I’m sober now as well. Occasionally eat a THC gummy and I do drink a pot of coffee a day lol. I quit tobacco about 6 months ago. That was maybe the hardest one lol

I’m sorry to hear that. Regarding SoundCloud, I get a lot of hits from some really hot girls. They are most likely dorky looking dweebs (like me). I just ignore them. Make cool music and post it.

I just use Cubasis. I tried using AUM, but for me it was like spinning plates on sticks. I like the linear approach, but that’s just me. Whatever works.

The Session Band apps are great if you are good with “hiring” session players. The output is limited, but you can cut it up and have your way with it. It’s relatively cheap and they have some nice licks. I thought the guitar player did some nice riffs.

Thanks. May pick a couple off next sale they have. They seem to go on sale somewhat often luckily.

I use Cubasis as my main DAW as well. Most is done in AUM but when it’s time to master or I just feel like using a DAW, C3 it is.

I work night shift so my 7-11 is more like 2-6/7 and that’s when I drink most of mine. Starbucks is good but I prefer Dunkin personally.

But at home, I love Cafe Bustelo. Cheap but damn is it good, especially if you like dark brews. Gevalia is also really good. Im also a sucker for a really good Blonde or Colombian roast.

  • @HotStrange Cafe Bustelo! That’s what my wife gets. I love the dark roast. I’ll have to try Gevalia. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks, man. That made my day! I was thinking about these and I just remembered that we did Rise and Shine, and Sarasvati on a 4-track, hard disk recorder. It was one of the first, called Turtle Beach Quad. Here is an article about it - https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/turtle-beach-quad. We still had to do a lot of bouncing, just like on a 40-4, but the sound quality was much better, and we didn't have to wait for the tape to rewind!

I had high hopes for Tony. Unfortunately, he was very unpredictable, and "he had a problem with his poisons". One of the last times I saw him was when we went to see John McLaughlin at The Cubby Bear Lounge in Chicago. We got there about 2 hours early and with General Admission, we got great seats. It was a trio with Dennis Chambers and Joey DeFrancesco. I think Tony was every bit as good as McLaughlin, Malmsteen, Vai, or any of the other shredders. He just needed a manager to keep it under control. I had hoped that would be me, but he just disappeared one day. The last I heard, he was playing for handouts on Santa Monica Beach.

    Oh well...

  • That’s good old stuff, Paul. You must have been very happy to be a part of it. If you devote your life to banking or sonesuch, you can’t devote it to music. If you devote it to music you gotta be satisfied with the risk your life will go nowhere… except for the music. That’s all you can count on. If that’s enough and it’s in your blood to make music life will have been worth living, though it may be lonely or sad.
    If you gotta you gotta.

I can’t complain. I’m not rich and famous, but I’m neither lonely nor sad. I guess I’m somewhere in the middle, like most folks. I had my 15 minutes, and… as James Dean once said, “I’m cute, too”.

I still have a ton of stuff I did with Tony, but it’s on cassette and mostly beyond salvage. I did actually post one of those a while ago. I tried to clean it up, but you can still hear the tape hiss. I tell myself… it’s the ocean. As I recall, he was pretty much incoherent at the time. I probably was a bit, too. I called it Crazy Man Without A Shirt. @McD check this one out.

  • @Paulieworld put those cassette tapes through Brusfri. It might lower the noise floor significantly.

The thing I love about this iOS stuff is that you can just make up a process on the fly. I doesn’t always work, but it’s always fun. The few times I went into a studio, I always felt under pressure, especially when the engineer kept looking at his watch. Thanks for listening.

Looks like you got that embedding thing figured out.
