Update Mazetools Soniface & Mutant

Dear Audiobus Community,
we have updated Mazetools Soniface Lite& Pro and Mazetools Mutant. There are fundamental new features like webcam-based motion tracking, many improvements as well as a detailed revision of the in-app guide in English and German.

As you may have seen, these are now also available for Audiobus. For this we have gone new ways and thanks to our iOS expert Marc Andre Weibezahn we have developed a workflow, which is based on the old Inter-App Audio interface, but simply works. What about AUv3 many will now think, that still takes time - however, we have learned a lot and it is increasingly moving into the realm of possibility.

We have tested the apps extensively, yet there is still a lot of potential for improvement, especially in the buffersize area. Therefore, we have marked the Audiobus feature as experimental in the update notes. We also lack test devices (so far only tested on Ipad 5th, IPad 9th, iPhone 8 & X). Saving AB session is already possible, but we can't guarantee that everything will always run error free, so always remember to save regularly.

After a long development time, we count all the more on the support of the community and constructive feedback. Just have a look, we are looking forward to questions and exciting discussions. We will start the first stream with Q&A and tutorials in the coming weeks.

Many greetings,
Stephan& Jakob

  • Yes! Such fun apps. Thrilled 😁 that the development continues!

  • Glad that the app is alive (again), I've had some great sessions with this app in the past. I was pretty fluent in the old version and must say it's pretty confusing with all the new. I'll get there with time :D

  • ThankS for commenting and letting us know! I was just talking with someone here (maybe you @Pxlhg) about the apps being cool and needing to be updated so that’s great news. Is it Audiobus only or IAA (ie usable in AUM and Cubasis)?

Ah couldn’t remember. Just got off work so im brain fried 😅 thanks for checking! I need to see how much space I have but I may have to redownload. Unless space is too low in that case it’ll just have to wait for now.

Thanks! you can choose within the start up menu between simple (made for small displays) and complex design, which is the regular. But over the time there have been things changed also in this design ;)

Like I see you have the pro version, in this is now also the visual mode implemented, you can select it also within the start up menu. For older devices we recommend the Sound Only mode which turns all visuals off and saves lots of power.
    Best, Jakob

Hiya, yeah I'm getting back into it fairly quick, it's been some time since I used it last.😊
I wonder if you could implement a button* for getting back to a connected "DAW" be it AudioBus, AUM or something similar.
Most IAA apps have this so you don't have to go via home screen.

Also, speaking of visuals, good tip on turning them off while creating but, say you're done and want to record a video with the visuals - you go to fullscreen mode and there I wish it could be completely clean except for a (very) small "x" to take you back.

*here's an example for return button to AUM (Lumbeat Drums)

  • Beautiful apps. Time to use my ipad screen transfer for TV feature ;)

  • Those of you who are fans of Soniface, also check out their Mutant app. It also got an update and is really fun. More like a sound game playing in 3D space, but also a creative tool… also now with Audiobus and IAA. Looks like it’s only $5.99 currently :)

Thank you skiphunt for highlighting mutant again, the app is sometimes overshadowed by big sister soniface ;)

Thanks, also we added the 2. Screen support (airplay) for Soniface with just the visual output, but there is the thing, that it sends also the sound via HDMI, it seems not possible to change the routing, even with a different AVAudioSession Config...but there are tools like HDMI Audio extractors which might be useful in the case...

@Pxlhg put the host button and less buttons in full screen mode on the list ;)

  • @ectoplastic DMed you, cheers!

  • Thanks for the update, should make it easier to sample into other apps.
I have so far been getting some crashes and instability which prevents Soniface pro from starting up, then needing to restart the ipad before it loads again, but I did get it to work initially in IAA mode for a while.

This is what we didnt get ether, sometimes this happens, in this case you can start the app manually and launch afterwards within AB (or any host) and it should automatically initialize with the host.

Yeah, that's what usually is possible in that situation, unfortunately for me often the app won't launch at all until a reboot, it just won't start at all. It will just crash to the home screen, even when not using any host but just as the standalone. I think this only happens after I've tried to use it as an IAA app in a host since booting.

What device do you have? Hopefully that’s not the normal case…

Little announcement: we recently reduced our prices for a bit of time, for all who might have an eye on it ;)

Generally, thank you to all who purchased our apps and keep on following our path, thats great support for us!!

  • Have only briefly checked these out so far, but first impression is that they are really cool - properly playing to the strengths of touch screen instead of just apeing hardware or desktop plugins, a tendency among iOS apps I’m getting increasingly tired of. Kudos to the devs!

Eh I like having both and also being able to work with “normal” plugins. Not sure I’d want every instrument to be made for touch in that way. I don’t have a desktop so having a typical desktop workflow is nice as well. Hope we continue to get both.

All, or even a majority of, apps abandoning desktop/hardware design principles going to happen, so don’t worry! There’s far more risk of the number of touch-first instruments dwindling even further, if recent trends are anything to go by.

I hope they don’t go away completely. Don’t get me wrong, I love touch based apps, I’m just glad we have both. I’d hate to see that go away completely.

That did make me think: what was the last big touch based release we had? Salome and Fluss? The Alexey apps are generally touch focused as well. Not many though that’s for sure.

That would be a good idea for a thead, yeah - a thread focusing on new releases that take advantage of touch screen! Salome was definitely the last, prior to that I'm not sure

Agreed! Would be great if we could pin multiple threads on here.

Another user with nearly the same device and os version reported similar issues and solved by updating to OS 17.

I agree about the importance of an ecosystem of approaches for different situations.

Yeah I increasingly gravitate toward touch instruments like TC-11 and Shoom. Mutant is now on sale and I’m thinking about grabbing it. Just wondering if it has the ability to load audio samples.

Yes. It’s possible to load user audio samples into Mutant

That’s a sweet deal. The interface is quirky and not exactly intuitive, but it’s a blast to experiment with, and once you get the gist of the interface logic, it starts to make more sense.

It also runs on M1 or better macOS

Soniface is the same though the new update vastly improved the UI. I’m tempted to buy at $2.99. How does it compare to Soniface (if you’ve tried both)?
