i just got this on offer adn im really struggling to see the appeal. its kinda cool when its run as an fx, but all the presets are straight drones and noise. is this what this is? i'd like some tamer presets, and some polyphony, am i in the wrong place?
It sounds like yes, you are in the wrong place.
Hilda is monophonic, period. You can easily get tame sounds out of it, but that's not what it's primarily geared toward. If you're not up for experimentation then there are dozens of other synths that are more suitable.
@brambos - It might be helpful to clarify in in the App Store description that Hilda is a monophonic synth.
I mean…not every synth needs to be polyphonic. And maybe harsh but yeah I don’t think the app is for you. It’s somewhat based on west coast synthesis which is experimental in nature and it’s kinda made with noise and drones in mind. Like Wim said, it can definitely be tamed but there are so many other synths that can get you there way easier. If you’re not wanting experimental, you probably won’t gel with this.
I'm adding rotation as we speak. Should be in an update later this week. It was a frequently requested feature, so let's do it.
Ooooo sweet 🤩
To me it seems like there is always a bit of pitch glide happening, even if I turn glide to zero. Otherwise I love Hilda, even more so the Music Easel Edition, but I just can´t stand that phantom glide. Am I the only one hallucinating this or is this a thing? And if so, can anything be done about it?
Yes I noticed that as well, it never goes to zero, would love it if I can turn it off when needed.
Great!
Add me on. Looking forward etc.
Ok, so I´m not the only one.
If you want a polyphonic synth, this isn’t for you. The example presets tend in a direction that demonstrate strengths that set it apart from the huge number of synths in the App Store. It can tamer sounds, too…it is up to you to set them up.
I’d recommend checking out video demos and tutorials of synths before purchasing them to make sure that they do what you want.
Awesome news..
I needed this just yesterday on a random sequence.. I saved it + now I can adjust it.. Thanks
It’s gone now when glide is set to 0
Hey, this is great!
You’re genuinely awesome 😄
Yeah I saw plenty of videos and have all of other brams other offers. I’m well aware it’s built in east coast synthesis. I like it as an Fx module! And plus I buy synths as investments to make preset banks in, not so much because I like the included factory presets. I’ve mapped all the live pad finger putting to buttons and the buttons mapped to sliders in Drambo and can now use them statically rather constantly tethering my finger to it. Reminds me of Shards or Diytape a bit. Maybe I’ll post on patchstorage
Hi @brambos is there any way the lowest note on the sequencer can become the selected root note on the scale?
I understand that you were irked by the OP's misunderstanding of where Hilda fits in the universe of synthesis options. But I'm not sure if it's true that West Coast style synthesis options are only for Krell like drones and a plethora of other clangorous soundscape experimentation.
There's a wealth of timbres that fit more "traditional" music styles that are only possible with West Coast approaches to synthesis. e.g. The combination of wave shaping/folding and low pass gates are super useful for creating percussive synth timbres that are very difficult to create using traditional subtractive synthesis approaches.
Hilda is one of my favourite releases of the last 12 months, but I haven't made a single drone patch in the many hours I've spent in her company.
Fluss on the hand, now that's where I lose myself in soundscape heaven (or hell, dependent on my mood).
I agree with this overall but I also agree that this app may not be exactly what the OP was after. It does seem to be geared slightly more towards experimental and as much as I adore this app, it wouldn’t be the first I’d recommend if someone asked me for an app that’s good for typical leads and basses lol. It’s definitely capable of that though. I’ve made some killer bass lines with it.
Irked?? Not at all. If I communicated that tone then it was totally unintentional.
I was just answering the question, which had two parts. Firstly, the poster was looking for polyphony. I was clarifying that there's no chance of it. So if polyphony is needed, then Hilda isn't for them.
I was also pointing out that the focus of Hilda isn't bread 'n butter type sounds. The poster mentioned there not being enough "tamer" presets. You may note that I said "You can easily get tame sounds out of it," But in answer to the question "Am I in the right place?" It seemed appropriate to say that in comparison to what it sounds like they're after, there are many choices that seem like they'd be better for that poster in terms of polyphony and presets.
You may note that a few posts later I mentioned that I had a great time after writing that coming up with just that ... lots and lots of nice, traditional, tame patches. It's actually super fast and easy with Hilda.
Anyway ... just clarifying where I was coming from since you brought it up. I can see how my terseness could be interpreted as irritation, but I wasn't in the least. I don't see how you squeezed the idea out of that post that I was saying anything at all about West Coast synthesis, Krell patches (which I don't even know what they are.😂), etc.
Yes, I do often need to take more time to fluff up and disclaimerateize my delivery. Noted. 😎
Indeed. I enjoy coming up with whacko patches, but I honestly never find a use for them. After my follow-up session with Hilda making "tame" patches, my fondness for it increased several-fold. Once you understand the layout, it's a terrifically fun and convenient place to make traditional synth sounds but spice them up subtly or terribly, and give them breath and life. Hilda is one of my favorite's for sure, even more so now.
@wim All good, I wasn't having a dig.
My comments weren't personal to your comments. It was more the case that often with apps that don't follow the typical subtractive synthesis boiler plate, there is often general feedback in forums that suggest those apps are in the main useful for experimental music genres. With that in mind I was simply attempting to redress the balance, as it would be a pity if potential users would self- deselect themselves from being future customers.
I'm in complete agreement with @HotStrange in that the likes of Hilda aren't first choice recommendations for artists more used to traditional subtractive synthesis. But of all the iOS/iPadOS apps that have features inspired by West Coast tech, I find Hilda to be the most approachable (once you've grokked the signal flow).
This. ^
That's what I love about this forum. Questions and comments lead me back to synths I haven't explored enough and I discover new things all the time. I'm happy with Hilda in a way that I never was before just from being pushed back to it from a new perspective. It's going to get way more use from me now.
Haven’t tried designing percussive patches, thanks for the insight!
Thank you so much!
But...
...that only works in the standalone version.
When using Hilda in AUM there´s still no escaping the glide.
Would be fantastic if that were fixed!
Best
No it should work everywhere because I changed the plugin, not the standalone. Are you sure you set it all the way to zero?
It works in all cases for me. Did you make sure it’s dialed all the way down?
Hey @brambos. I was just using Hilda in a piece when i stumbled on a potential workflow problem.
The synth doesn’t seem to display the name of the currently loaded patch anywhere - it doesn’t even highlight the currently loaded preset name when the presets interface is opened. Is this correct or am i missing something?
So, I’m using one of my own presets, but i don’t remember which one and the synth doesn’t tell me anywhere?
Could this be a feature request please? It’d be really useful, even if it’s only displayed in the presets dialog. Cheers.
Could you maybe demo or share some of the tame patches?
