    But not beer.

Depends. Buy a beer in Norway and you're broke.

I'm already broke but I can still afford beer in Germany or Poland.

Yes, it differs massively per region.

But generally, we suffer from very high VATs (21% where I live) on top of other taxes and prices that tend to be quite a bit higher than in the US.

That stands to reason. In Germany beer is considered more like a food staple than a recreational beverage. 😉

My first day visiting my company's office in Berlin I was surprised to be handed a liter bottle of strong and delicious German beer at precisely 2:00pm. It was explained to me that beer break was routine and protected by law. They could have been pulling my leg about the law, but the beer was there on my desk every single day. 😂

Move in to Europe. The law here guarantees refunds for 14 days after app purchase.

And you will also get to pay more for every. single. app.

Why would apps cost more, any proof of that?

Tax and Apples currency conversion, I asked for proof the policy of returning apps implements a surcharge for this.

    Got it.

    Here it is:

From the Paid Applications Schedule 2 (Available under "Agreements, Tax, and Banking" in iTunes Connect), 3.8 and 6.3:

"Apple will have the right to retain its commission on the sale of that Licensed Application, notwithstanding the refund of the price to the End-User."

I think, Bram, he is asking about whether the EU refund policy is part of the reason for higher pricing of apps in the EU store vs the US prices, but the quote you supplied is about the - theoretical but seemingly not actually applied - right of Apple to retain their commission.

No, I don't think the refund policy in itself is responsible for the higher pricing of apps. But there is a lot more consumer protection in general in the EU, so that probably accounts indirectly for a part of the higher prices we pay for stuff.

😂 I’ve heard mention of things like this before and I love that. I think Italy has something similar. Maybe not with beer but a protected afternoon break. We need that stateside lol I bet that German beer is tasty 🍺

That's not provable as Apple doesn't reveal details behind its pricing policies, and the return policy wouldn't be the sole driver of higher prices anyway. Higher return rates, cost of complying with regulations, higher corporate taxes, currency hedging and a lot of other factors contribute to higher regional costs of doing business. Companies don't just eat those costs. They pass them along in the form of higher prices.

Don't take what I said to @israelite too literally. It was a generalization and a bit of a light hearted dig, that is all.

I practically didn't drink beer at all for a couple of years when I returned to the US. It just wasn't the same.

Okay I would hate for coffee to be ruined for me lol. I don’t drink often and could live without it. Coffee though. It’s part of my DNA at this point lol.

Is it bad that part of the main reason I want to travel more is to try coffee from around the world? 😂

Not at all. I'm also a huge coffee lover. Make sure you sample the Blue Mountain coffee if you ever make it to Jamaica. One of the best coffees I can remember.

    • I have also never once had a notification from Apple when someone does and why (but perhaps that's a US thing, I'm in Europe?)

There are some new (like 2 years old) notifications about IAP refunds and maybe some additional information about them in the new StoreKit API. But that's for IAPs only and I don't know much more as I don't use those APIs.

Will do. We’re thinking about taking a cruise there next year so if so, I’ll have to grab a cup :)
