AUv3 Step Sequencers in 2023. What am I missing?

Need to downsize for a few months and won’t be using any hardware. I usually use a Sequentix Cirklon as my main sequencer (MIDI, CV, USB…). Need something in iOS to hold me over for awhile.

I already have a bunch:

Drambo
MiRack
Riffer
Cykle
Thesys
OODA
Step Bud, Melody Bud, etc..
Rozeta
Probably more I’m forgetting.

Not entirely happy with any of these. While fun, they’re rather basic TBH. Or the the interface is crazy (Thesys).
I’m looking for a more comprehensive solution, along the lines of Five12 Numerology. Would like to run it inside of AUM if possible.

What am I missing? If anything? Or am I destined to use a laptop?

Cheers

  • How are they basic? Drambo is deeper than the Mariana Trench. Haha

Numerology is desktop Mac only, and nothing i'm aware of comes close.

but when it comes to iPad, i use Drambo all the way (either for software and for hybrid setup), and don't really look elsewhere.
besides Drambo, i use Thesys, Senode, Cream, and occasionally Octachron. but could live without any of them.

sequencer module that came with the latest Drambo update insanely rocks, and allows to go really deep if one's not completely happy with regular Drambo sequencer.

another thing that insanely rocks for sequencing is wavetable LFO. have not seen anything comparable elsewhere.

  • LK
    ZOA

Drambo has significant sequencing power when you look at it closely.

  • Was going to say Quantum but it’s not AUv3. You can run it as IAA in AUM though.

  • Yea you would struggle to find a sequencer more capable than Drambo

I don’t like “Elektron” style sequencing either in hardware or software.

Yeah, I really like that one.

Maybe buy an Arturia Beatstep Pro and run it as a hardware sequencer. It runs beautifully with AUM.

  • Atom
    Octachron
    Senode
    StepPolyArp

Drambo really. You don't have to use the step sequencer side tho it is super flexible, use the modular side.

There is nothing on iOS is at Numerology level.

  • +1 to Drambo.

LK and Atom 2. LK was the best before it started freezing but the devs are working on fixing it.

You're saying none of the HY sequencers comes close? Seqund? And then once you get into Max4Live there is a whole 'nother rabbit hole world of sequencers to explore.

  • Strokes is well worth a look

~~I would like to see some functions like in Bitwig, a simple 8-32 steps sequence could be enhanced very easily. Within Bitwig this also works with audio:

    • Retrigger notes. An example: a note could be triggered X-times within a certain length, triggers can be shifted but also velocity.
    • Several options/conditions for a note/event. Some examples: only play note on the 1st or last bar, play a note only on the 2nd and 4th bar etc.

I’m not aware there’s something like this on iOS, what I like up until now are Drambo and Koala (for samples). I think both could benefit from above suggestions.~~

    Drambo!

I don’t know, I just watched a bunch of videos on Numerology and haven’t seen anything that couldn’t be replicated in Drambo with the new sequencer module. Have you gone deep with the sequencer module?

Yeah, I really like that one.

If you like that style of sequencer, check out Midi Dreams (and Midi Drums)

Sadly no. Jim from Five12 had talked about an iOS version years ago but he’s been occupied with his eurorack sequencer Vector.

Looks like I’m doing the laptop. I enjoy iOS 10x more for the user experience though.

Thanks for all the suggestions. A few I haven’t got in there that I’ll check out.

And yes, Drambo is nice. I like it for drums (often use it as s auv3 just for that). Not crazy about it for melodic stuff.

Yeah, I’ve already got a Cirklon. Need a soft seq in iOS thats on that level (have also used Numerology since it first came out).

Drambo's sequencer has a retrig condition, that lets you have up to 8 triggers in one step (whatever that's set to).

    • Several options/conditions for a note/event. Some examples: only play note on the 1st or last bar, play a note only on the 2nd and 4th bar etc.

Sounds like you're describing Drambo's cycle condition.

If you don't know these, watch some tutorials, might be, what you are looking for.

Damn, how could I ever miss that! Thanks a lot, I really like this 👍
    @Apex , definitely Drambo 😉

  • Drambo, Bram Bos Rozeta, and Thesys for me are the best.

Yep, it’s unique .. and MidiSteps… The Key/Scale transposer is precious..
And a new Riffer is pending…

  • edited November 2023

Also Bram’s Hikda can act as a cool sequencer. I really think they could make a beast sequencer if they wanted to, but not sure the demand is there.

  • I’m really really sure that if you get deep into drambo’s step and cycle conditions then theoretically there’s no sequencer function it can’t do. I’m struggling to think of anything sequencer based you can’t replicate in drambo. Did you check the tutorials on YouTube? There’s a LOT beneath the surface there

    +1 for Drambo
+1 for MidiDreams (that’s the one in the videos above)
I love using Drambo for creating sequences before a performance, and then use the clip launcher matrix when playing.
MidiDreams is the ideal live performance / jam sequencer for me: Configurable scales. And the easy readable, analog sequencer style UI with fairly large sliders and buttons make it part of my “staple diet” for Berlin School jams. Ideal if you want to manipulate sequences on the fly.

BTW: You can actually combine both and load MidiDreams inside Drambo. A great combination.

I really like MidiSteps from the same dev as well.

  • i've got a step sequencer with AUv3 support i'm hoping to release before the end of the year. currently in beta. will definitely share it on this forum when i launch

Ooooo man 🤩 Riffer and Chordjam are 2 of my go to midi apps so I’m stoked about this. Thanks for updating us. Is there an ETA for release?
