  • Not an Audio Unit 😞

  • XLN, as in, Addictive Drums XLN??? I'm not interested in this particular plugin, but if they ported Addictive Drums over, my iOS setup would finally be on par with my desktop.

Yes, THAT XLN! This may not be groundbreaking but the fact that they’re now on iOS is!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

  • This looks cool. Your field recordings sync to a plugin in your DAW.

I can’t find the plugin on their site though. And Just Press Record kinda does this if you add its iCloud sync folder to your Ableton places.

  • Can't find any mention of the Life plugin anywhere at the moment...

The iOS app released before the desktop one. It should be out soon

  • Ohhh XLN please port AD and let me be your slave…

    109€ introsale.

    maybe a game changer.... :)

  • XLN is on iOS now! That’s huge

    Indeed it is

  • Think their servers are getting hammered - download speeds are terrible...but I think it might be worth the wait...!

I honestly thought they were the big announcement in may with the “something big is coming to iOS” snippet nugget

This is far more exciting to me than that

OMG if we get addicted drums 2 on iOS, I’m coming right back - and you will FEEL THE METAL FLOW!!!

Oh how I hope they are working on AD2!

  • So it’s a Sample Based Drum Machine with some AI sprinkled in to facilitate Drum sequence creation?

Playbeat3, Atlas and even their own XO and other Drum sequencers can already do this too no? Just import your own found sounds. Or am i missing something?

I guess it helps with the sample based drum machine workflow by optimizing some of the Sample processing.

Uh…So if you’re in the woods and have crappy connection you won’t be able to have access to those cool sounds of you stepping in Moose Crap and running from a Bear?

They should enable local network transferring as an option and sync later.

  • I’m not particularly excited about this; but I meant their entry into iOS means real metal drums are finally coming!!!!!!!

And yes echo, playbeat3 is a hard one to beat, thanks again for putting me on.

  • So saw a preview for the Life Plugin. Looked amazing. Is there an app that can do something like this?

It looked like Patterning meets a sampler with an auto chopper that creates random patterns.

  • I see it as a €100 way to get your iPhone recordings into a desktop DAW, which is cool, but I have recording apps that can save into iCloud, which will cost me nothing extra.

I love they’ve given me the idea to do it though!

  • Don’t have a desktop so it’s of no use to me but it’s cool to see another big player coming to iOS.

  • Instadeleted 🙃

I'm not sure if this means they'll be porting their desktop stuff to ios - the recorder is a pretty simple app that syncs audio recordings to a desktop based beat creator via the cloud.

If you don't have an Internet connection when you record it's saved locally till the cloud is available again and it automatically syncs.

  • But how do you get your samples from your iPhone to your computer? Does it sync locally P2P without needing the cloud to shuttle the files along?

XLN audio have their own cloud service - I don't know anything about it so can't comment on security, capacity etc. When you install the desktop app and plugins you generate a code which you input in the ios or android apps - this links them so recordings made on the phone appear automatically in the list of samples on the desktop.

As I say, it doesn't rely on an Internet connection - if one is available, then the transfer is pretty quick, if not, the recordings sync as soon as the phone is on line again. There doesn't seem to be any other way to transfer recordings and although they seem to be saved locally the location isn't exposed in the Files app.

But it does require an internet connection though to get your files off the iPhone. You can record all day in the wild but those sounds are unusable to you until you have an internet connection.

Seems weird that this is the workflow out of the box as any sort of Remote hunting for sounds will be constrained for working in isolation without a connection. Like being on a Plane or Bus or Train or anywhere you might not have internet access.

Guess you need to sync ahead and then work with those files which have been synced.

I encountered this issue last week on a flight. A plugin required internet access to phone home to iLok and failed to load. That sucked big time.

OK - so yeah, so this is a scenario - you can record all day without an Internet connection - say you're on a plane. The ios app doesn't need the Internet to record stuff - it's just a fairly basic recorder and doesn't need to authenticate with any back end stuff. Any recordings you make get stored till you get back on the Internet when they sync to the XLN cloud and are then available when you fire up the Life app or plugin on your desktop.

Elsewhere someone mentioned loopmix as 'more advanced than Life' ... I have no opinion personally.

Yeah. It’s a neat idea i just have a workflow issue with the sync model to actually use the assets.

Seems like the app should just be on both platforms or at least allow Sharing of Processed audio clips via P2P when an internet connection isn’t available.

I’ll stick with Loopmix and Playbeat3 on both platforms for now.

One last thing from me - the field recorder app isn't the only way to get samples into the desktop app. You can import any content from your desktop (up to 15 seconds per sample) or record directly from your main DAW. So you can use any recording app on your phone and transfer it to your desktop in whatever way possible - then import it.

  • Companion app only, couldn’t get it to work with having desktop version
