Song Of The Month Club - December 2023
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and__ improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
Without you what’s left of me?
Without the things you help me see
And all the way from a to b
Well there is nowhere I’d rather be
Without you
The world won’t spin
There’s just a void
Inside my skin
What you know the things you feel
And what you show what you conceal
Well here we are, what’s left to say?
Without the tears to wipe away
And all the problems in our way
Will have to wait for another day
Without you
The world won’t spin
There’s just a void
Inside my skin
What you know the things you feel
And what you show what you conceal
Bringing this back up as it was posted a bit earlier than usual.
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Nucleus for the English horn, violin, and cello; Solo for the bassoon, oboe, and flute; Dolce for the basses; and Omnisphere, ZebraHZ, and Alchemy for the other instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled The Dream.
Enjoyed this months entry Richard, something about the feel / vibe that I liked 🤨
Thanks very much for listening 🙏❤️
A lovely calm and slowly evolving meditation.
Cool track. The production sounds like a step up. I like the additional synths and effects and vocal samples/pads which create a nice trebly ambience.
Definitely a more polished production. Really good.
Here's mine:
I want to support Klownshed , now , thanks to his suggestion and participation and I also always wanted to add my song of the month but I didn’t feel like I had anything good enough to submit so I only wish to start with my best piece .. this thread also encapsulates the spirit of my idea proposal to Gavin
This was just a creation I wanted to add but never did. It was done with boss drum machine and Roland DAW hardware from 2000. obviously the guitars and bass are played by me, I meant drums are digital . Else analog….I tried to remaster using Klevgrand suite and tools
@richardyot your music is new to me. I like your vocal style. You have a very calm soft rock sound. It’s really polished and I like your ambient and synth sounds you layered with it. It goes in between spa type relaxing music to a soft rock. Great drums.
@DavidEnglish always likes your classical sounds . Very calming piece and very traditional , nice .
@klownshed i elaborated in your post in creations but just to repeat, you have a lot of talent in the score department.
Very atmospheric and cinematic, and so many different moods are evoked all in the one piece, love it, it really takes you on a journey.
Impressively tight guitar playing and I found the lead part very melodic. My only crit is that I would have liked to hear more variation in the overall dynamics of the track, with maybe some quieter parts and a sense of ebb and flow. But technically it is very accomplished.
Thanks for the kind words.
Very accomplished playing on your track. I think the mix could be cleaned up a bit by cutting the low mids (300-400Hz ish maybe?) but it charges along nicely.
I don’t really listen music with technical guitar solos so I am probably completely wrong as it’s not a genre I’m at all familiar with, but the actual playing sounds spot on to my ears.
You can clearly shred. Which I am absolutely incapable of :-) my left fingers struggle with one note a bar at 100 bpm lol.
@klownshed thanks dude. Yeah shred metal WAS my thing but unless you have a really tight drummer and tight rhythm player, it’s too hard of a genre to self produce. (I couldn’t get anywhere without the producer/engineer that helped me with the boss machine I had. He wanted to charge more for mixing and mastering so I just told him to give me what I had, I couldn’t afford anymore at the time.) And I also appreciate you telling me which frequencies to hit, I’m going to adjust it (just for myself I meant)
@richardyot thanks man. I think you’re right. I think my verse 1 packed a hard punch, but verse 2 was lazy and I sound a little bored. I remember doing the second verse take was very annoying because of a sound /mic issue … so I just improvised the second verse lol
The rhythm, bass, drums, and main riffs/chorus/bridge were all structured. Verse 1 was pretty well rehearsed but like I said when I got to the end of the third hour I just said let’s just “roll dude” and the lack of dynamics is more of me trying not to screw up the melody otherwise yes, I should’ve employed a lot more , dynamics with attack as well as rhythm
Thanks for the compliments and the honest critiques . I’m glad you guys like the song even if shred metal isn’t your cup of tea
Two great tracks @klownshed and @dreamcartel . Couldn’t be more different but both really good.
Particularly enjoyed some of the violin sounds and playing @klownshed … what did you use for this?
Fine shredding @dreamcartel , sounds like you’ve been playing for a while…
Thanks :-)
All the strings are from Spitfire Audio Abbey Road 2 Iconic Strings on the Mac.
New to the forum and I thought I should say hi and share my music with you! Besides my friend’s guitar and my theremin, everything was done in Logic for iPad. I can also share the lyrics if anyone’s interested!
@richardyot I really enjoy your track! I’m getting a retro hazy jazz club vibe, the lush velvety texture is beautiful. The vocal synth is cool as well. I personally like a bouncy bass that moves you (Peur des filles by L’Impératrice is a good example) but I also love how delicate it is in your track
@dreamcartel I used to be into metal (mostly black and death) and I think your track rocks. First verse killed it, but the second verse is still cool to me. I’m sure if you sing or work with vocalists but I feel like vocals would be awesome on this. That’s why I think the second verse is good, I can hear a good vocalist filling out the section
Welcome to the forum and to SOTMC, thanks for posting
This is a dense and multi-layered track, I love the dark vibe provided by the guitar lines and the whispered vocal. Musically there's a lot going on, with all the background elements weaving around the bass, drums and the vocals.
The guitars, synths, and the theremin provide a lot of textural interest, and I love the way they are all bought to the fore in the loose ending, when the drums and the bass drop out and leave just the more textural sounds in place.
Throughout the track there is this great interplay between the musical sounds provided by the bass and the guitar and the other more abstract sounds that create the gritty atmosphere, it's a cool concept.
@GeoTony Thank you man. Its true, i began the art of shredding a long time ago
@morrismorris great song man. As Richard said it’s multi layered, and it has a lot of genres going on. I agree with mostly all he said, so i wont try to out expound that. FWIW, my favorite part was at 2:45 when it all kind of came together very subtly, and then it ramped up. lotta talent (BTW IF you wanted to do some vocals, we can collaborate on that, and you can also add some synth stuff, if you see some spaces, lets talk), but thanks for the nice words and compliment.
The SOTM club idea was an amazing thought @richardyot , good on ya mate as i think they say, i dont know if i used it right
Thanks, and welcome to the club, which has been running for almost 9 years without skipping a month
Something different for December. Tried to keep it raw and gentle - doing less is so hard.
Nice interplay between the beat, the bass, and the keys. The melody is catchy and the bassline weaves nicely around it.
It's probably a bit too long as it stands, if I was the producer in this session I would either shorten the track by a couple of minutes or maybe introduce another musical idea/chord progression/melody after the break.
The patches are nicely chosen, especially the bell-like Rhodes, and the lilting beat gives a great laid-back vibe to the whole thing.
Dynamic drums and a sweet melody! Less is usually more.
Definitely has a dream like quality. Beautiful piece!
I'll simply describe it as the perfect "Yot" vibe I grew to love over the years on this forum. This song sums it all.
I enjoyed a lot the samples and sound choices made to create intricate soundscapes during the transitions. But what shines the most on this track is the quality of the vocals. First the melody itself matches your vocal range perfectly, so that each slight nuances in your vocals inflections is able to convey emotions. I had goosebump listening to this in my headphones... Sonically, The texture of the vocals is also really warm ( Sm7b sound signature? ) which is extremely inviting to listen to your words which are btw, a great love declaration.
One of your finest moment for sure.
Thank you! I’m glad to be here 😄 It’s quite incredible how you’ve run this consistently for over 9 years. Really admirable
@dreamcartel thank you for the kind words!! I would love to maybe work on something together one day. Gotta see about me doing vocals though, there’s still a lot for me to learn
Very beautiful timber and textures choices. Very meditative and introspective track as usual. Listening to it, I dreamed you would be visiting Japan and that we would go take a Raga lesson class with Terry Riley!
Great piece, composition and production with loads of tension (hardly resolving which I personally like 😉). I love the solo instruments especially the unison around 2:22 before you take the track to another direction.
Now that's a hell of shredder here ! Great playing and technique.
I agree with both @richardyot @klownshed comments:
1- the track could benefit with more dynamic contrast. that would give you the opportunity the use your playing technic in different contexts and use everything you got on your guitar colour palette.
2- the mix as is a bit muddy very likely because of overcrowded low midrange. Some cut there could help achieve better frequency separation and more clarity.
Not an expert in this style, but obviously a lot of work had been put in here !
Very busy and interesting track. I could here so many references to dark wave, dark ambient, and even goth rock in a way. Overall, I felt like the shadow of Trent Reznor was flying all over the track. Great production as well. Keep them coming!
I like the atmosphere of the track and your taste for blending few elements that can make the track stand. I must agree with Richard that as it is, 6:00 is a bit too long if you don't bring more variety (either different dynamic or different chord progression or different instrumentation). The first part stopping around 3:30 is perfect as it is.
