    I have many tracks in the tubes but didn’t have the time to complete any for this month so I am sharing a track I originally made for the Audiobus collective charity Halloween album

    For those interested, the whole album is available on bandcamp and is full of amazing music:

    https://abfmusic2.bandcamp.com/album/eg-e-sung-a-horrific-compilation-album-from-the-audiobus-forum-collective

    Some people told me it could be part of a Christmas tale so might be a good time to share it here.

    Happy creepy scary Christmas everyone !

  • @JanKun thanks man; I tried :smile:
    For me the hardest part was trying to mix and “master” - I’d suggest listening to the remastered version where I did exactly what you said and boosted both mid ranges effectively with GF2

    I love your Scary Christmas song , even if it was meant for Halloween my favorite Christmas and Halloween movie is nightmares before Christmas

    This had a Danny elf man type of mood; but it didn’t sound like him. Your composition is excellent. Your arrangement is probably the best I’ve heard on here yet. How you interwove all of those sounds together cohesively without stepping on your own toes and then the classical elements are so well placed and used

    It is a great piece - truly amazing work, and I don’t say that lightly

    Good stuff. Theres a lot going on, will take a few listens to get captured by the hooks. I like how it keeps changing up and particularly like the woodwind runs/flourishes.

    Has a feel of the Dance Macabre to it which is always a good thing.

    My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Without you what’s left of me?
    Without the things you help me see
    And all the way from a to b
    Well there is nowhere I’d rather be

    Without you
    The world won’t spin
    There’s just a void
    Inside my skin

    What you know the things you feel
    And what you show what you conceal

    Well here we are, what’s left to say?
    Without the tears to wipe away
    And all the problems in our way
    Will have to wait for another day

    Without you
    The world won’t spin
    There’s just a void
    Inside my skin

    What you know the things you feel
    And what you show what you conceal

    I'll simply describe it as the perfect "Yot" vibe I grew to love over the years on this forum. This song sums it all.
    I enjoyed a lot the samples and sound choices made to create intricate soundscapes during the transitions. But what shines the most on this track is the quality of the vocals. First the melody itself matches your vocal range perfectly, so that each slight nuances in your vocals inflections is able to convey emotions. I had goosebump listening to this in my headphones... Sonically, The texture of the vocals is also really warm ( Sm7b sound signature? ) which is extremely inviting to listen to your words which are btw, a great love declaration.
    One of your finest moment for sure.

    Thanks for the nice review, it's much appreciated. The vocals came out well in this one, although I'm not quite sure why, I was probably just having a good day when I tracked them.

    It's beautifully cinematic, and so varied and expressive. I love all the different moods that are conveyed, and when listening to it you just can't help playing a movie in your head. Incredible work.

  • @JanKun thank you! It’s definitely the most layered track I’ve made, my iPad was barely holding on lol but I’m happy with how I managed to bring it all together :)

    Your song is beautiful. I think it’s really compelling and inspiring. The melancholy is so on point. You already know how much I love dark music 🤭

  • @JanKun listening to your track I can clearly see a Tim Burton movie. 🍿 Great stuff!. Very solid and intelligent arrangement. Specially love the little twirls and choirs.

  • Nice! I'm often on ABF but never saw these discussions, I like it! I actually listened to all tracks while working and enjoyed them a lot :)

    @richardyot I really like your voice :D Nice atmosphere of the track, chilled and also perfectly mixed (at least on my crappy headphones).

    @DavidEnglish beautiful! It grows just a bit too slowly for my taste but it's a matter of personal preference. Superb sounds!

    @klownshed listened to your track on my Soundcloud feed, killer violins around half of the track!

    @dreamcartel nice shredding, especially around 3:00! I don't like much the mix tough, seems a bit too flat. Like, I know the instruments are there but you can't really hear them clearly.

    @morrismorris amazing track, very deep, a lot of variety and a great mix. Beautiful singing too.

    @RonnieOmelettes very enjoyable! Great bassline and keys, I love how they pair with the background office sounds. A bit too long maybe, as other said.

    @JanKun wow, great work! An impressive arrangement, a lot of variations and you perfectly nailed the spooky theme! This is the kind of stuff I would like to create at some point, very inspiring.

    Thanks man. Yes the mix ruined the “sound” but luckily not the whole song. Appreciate it.

    This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Nucleus for the English horn, violin, and cello; Solo for the bassoon, oboe, and flute; Dolce for the basses; and Omnisphere, ZebraHZ, and Alchemy for the other instruments.

    After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Dream.

    Lovely sounds as usual. I think your stuff is very consistent each month. Always slow, contemplative and evolving. The sort of music I've tried to make before. And failed.

  • I don't have much time lately to compose so I need a lot of time to complete a track. This one ended up being pretty nice, it is a very calm and relaxing piano/synth/guitar track:

    It was also a chance to preview some Cubasis 3 HALion presets. I'm not sure I'll use the synth ones since I have a ton of other software (and hardware) options but some of the string and brass instruments are absolutely amazing. The guitar pizzicato arpeggio at the middle of the song is a HALion instrument.

    Hope you enjoy!

    Very nice meditative piece, I especially like the appropriately wet water sound effect. The guitar is mixed very low but adds something to the music.

  • @unlink thank you for the comment! I’ve only been singing for a year with no training at all so it’s great to hear I’m not killing anyone’s eardrums hehe

    I love your track! Very different from what I usually listen to but the instruments sound great. I was thinking some soft, free form vocals a la Mojave 3 would sound beautiful on this.

  • Thanks @richardyot! You mean the guitar is a bit too low in the mix? The water effect was actually an happy accident with FLUSS but hey, this happens lol
    @morrismorris noted and thanks!

    Overall very enjoyable, calming piece.

    If I was the producer of this track I’d probably want to change the piano sound (unless there was an additional element) as it’s a a bit dull in tone to carry the piece or alternatively duplicate/transpose the upper notes an octave higher (or maybe transpose the entire piano other than the bass an octave up) . It is the kind of sound I’d use for the piano if there was a lot of higher frequency content above it to prevent it clashing. An additional melody line in the upper registers to carry the tune would have a similar effect.

    Minor stuff though.

  • @unlink I like it, very calm, awesome sounds , just really pleasing palette - soothing. Good work on the mix too

    @JMcM thanks man; not to be boring with my comment but it was calming, very simple and effective to chill the mood.

    I like minimalism

    Gorgeous, love the sparsely played chords, the spacey melodies, and the drone that sits behind it all.

    Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment :) I really wanted the piano not to carry the track but I can definitely see your point, taking note for the next tracks!

  • Thanks for the feedback and suggestions guys. I frequently fall into two traps 1) doing 4 bars of this, then 4 bars of that, then 4 bars of this and that, 4 bars of this and that dropped out, 4 bars of everything . . . etc., and/or 2) introducing instruments sequentially - usually in the order I added them to the song! I definitely need to spend more time arranging before I start cleaning everything up, but it's so tempting to just move on to the next shiny idea.

    Nice piece. As usual I like your ability to create evocative soundscapes with sparse and well chosen elements, leaving space for the mind to wonder. My ears might have been formatted by years of listening to post rock, but to me, this could be the prelude to a big sonic/electric storm à la Mogwai or Sigur Ros.

    Hard to find anything bad to say about this. Perfect piano ambient, in terms of structure, timbers, atmosphere and even track length.

    Listening to it, I dreamed you would be visiting Japan and that we would go take a Raga lesson class with Terry Riley!

    I love that dream. That would be a perfect thing to do in dream life or real life.

  • @richardyot
    Upbeat opening with a smooth ethereal-mechanical feel. That opening nicely contrasts with the lyrics by establishing a happier with you baseline. I especially like the stuttering music and extreme echo effects. The various elements fit together really well.

    @klownshed
    Cool dreamlike opening sets the stage for a very interesting string-section piece. Pulls you in with dramatic and emotional melodies, along with a back-wash of musical currents. Most excellent!

    @dreamcartel
    Powerful, almost over-the-edge song with a driving beat that keeps your interest throughout. Rousing guitar solo.
    Not for the meek or faint-hearted.

    @morrismorris
    Eerie feel with intriguing lyrics and tone. Really like how the singing voice sits on top of the music, much like a sports announcer’s voice piercing through the crowd noise.

    @RonnieOmelettes
    Has a strong old-style nightclub atmosphere to it. A very chill sound with a relaxed no-worries approach.

    @JanKun
    You captured the Halloween mood right from the beginning. Quickly moves to a circuslike atmosphere with an almost-drunken swing and sway, much like a spinning out-of-control merry-go-round. (All this in the first minute!) The superb orchestration highlights the various instruments and choral voices. You make it easy to visualize familiar Halloween-themed scenes, as though they were musically illustrated. It’s all nicely compact, but briming with musical exploration. Amazing work!

    @unlink
    Love the piano sound with the long reverb. It perfectly sets the stage for the more eclectic sounds that act as a musical and sonic counterpoint. It all gels together nicely.

    @JMcM
    Calmly meditative. The piano and pad-like sounds blend especially well. It’s music that rolls over and through you at the same time. Excellent pacing and melodic variety (within the self-imposed ambient constraints).

  • Thank you @DavidEnglish

    And happy new year to everybody in the song of the month club. Hopefully I’ll be able to come up with at least one tune for next year :-)

    I can’t think of much to add to what the others have said, minimalist and calming are the two words that most obviously spring to mind. Anything that can evoke a feeling or emotion is doing its job :-)

  • @DavidEnglish thank you so much . I haven’t logged in since Christmas so sorry for the delayed thanks but I appreciate your words. Especially because your compositional skills are without equal!
