A Good Day To Die (Riffler Flow)
This is my first project with Riffler Flow. It’s pretty cool. I ran into a few things that I didn’t like, but found a few workarounds.
@McD I found that if I start the audio in Cubasis, then toggle over to RF, it works just fine. It presented a few timing “opportunities”, but I think I was able to make it work, sort of. I got around the glitchy loops by overlapping 4/4 measures at the 3rd quarter note. I think it worked out pretty well. Thanks for the heads up on RF. I’m sure I would have stumbled across it sooner or later, but sooner is more better.
Heghlu’meh QaQ javjam!

This is really great Paulie! Are the drums from Cubasis’s loops or another AUv3?
Glad you’re liking it, I’m enjoying it a lot myself and have a track I’m also working on that uses it (and Jazz Drummer).
The OG Riffler is very good as well if you haven’t tried it.
The drums are from a Blocs Wave pack, plus a few bits that I input in the MIDI editor from the default Percussion sounds in Cubasis. I really like the original Riffler. I used it quite a bit in Mr. Fusion. Thanks for listening. Have a great night.
Same to you 🙏
Nice one @Paulieworld ! I love both Rifflers. Even as a guitarist I find them very useful and useable!
Nice! Another new arrow in your quiver…
That arropegiated guitar sound reminds me of Andy Summers with the Police… lots of relay and reverb to make a
power trio sound bigger.
I saw them in 1979 at Northern Illinois University. They were driving a station wagon with a trailer. They did a great show. Sting was a good bassist, but Jaco was better.
You're right. Strong Andy Summers vibe here. I like it.
He did some great stuff. Here’s one of my favorites…
Great track bro. Very inspiring.
Recently I had been going over old Police albums and really appreciate the layers of sound he added to the group.
+100 😊
That is a good use of Riffler. Very nice track
❤️
The Rifflers are the first generative apps that produce what I consider usable results!
And thanks for posting your track. Insta-listen 😉
Those chords made me think of a great Bruce Cogburn album with mysterious guitar and lyrical content:
I went off and tried to create Cm-major 7th chords in Riffler Flow… I settled on D# Aug with C in the bass. The voice leading in the arrpegios is crucial to get close to Andy Summers or Bruce Cogburn. Thankfully, Riffler Flow lets you manually input the TAB for the notes and with enough effort you can get there.
This, Piano Motifs, and Beatly are truly a cut above the rest. Nothing else comes close, imo. With Riffler being the top dog for sure.
@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr @cuscolima This latest version of Riffler is a lot of fun to work with. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thank you very much!
Thanks for posting this. I was not familiar with Bruce Cogburn. I really enjoy this stuff, i.e. spoken word over a musical background. It allows me to concentrate on the words rather than the music. In Chicago we had a guy named Ken Nordine who had a program called Word Jazz. In addition to being thought provoking, it was often very funny. I would love to try something like this some day. I’m not much of a poet, so maybe somebody will offer.
Superb Paulie!
I was very reluctant on getting Flow but could not resist in the end, I'm not very happy with it to be honest but at least have learned to add my own chord progressions, so that's something. To be continued ...🙃
I encountered a few “issues” with it, too. It forced me to try a slightly different approach. I just blindly dropped some Flow patterns into Cubasis, and worked around them. I’m still not sure if I like it, but it’s growing on me. Thanks for listening.
I dont know what these apps are or do but you make them work. Great track. What is it that changed in your workflow ? Or are you just mentioning that it’s a new app you tried?
Cool title - native?
Yeah, I see what everyone means about the Andy Summers vibe. Great track 👍 You're full of musical surprises and very prolific, mate! I never know what's about to start when I click play on your uploads, but it's always interesting and engaging. Thanks for the share.
Another hit. I really enjoyed this one. But I also enjoy all your work.
There is a sens of elegance here that resonates with me.
It didn’t change all that much. I like to have a few “parts” in a song. I like to have them mostly complete before I start arranging. Riffler Flow doesn’t seem to like background audio, so I ended up just throwing in stuff and hoped for the best. About halfway in, the key changes from C to A. That was not intentional. I adjusted the tone and tempo but forgot to check the key. Dopey me! I just decided to keep it since it seemed to fit.
The title comes from the Klingon expression - Today is a good day to die. I changed it slightly since I didn’t want to scroll down to T. I’m lazy. I’m pretty sure the writers at Star Trek got it from a Native American expression. I don’t know which nation, so I’m guessing Comanche. They were hard core warriors and probably a lot like the Klingons.
Thanks for listening. Have a good one.
I think Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland created their “sound”. Sting was a decent enough bass player and had a good voice, but I think he was mostly eye candy for the young girls. When he went solo, he once said “I prefer to work with Black musicians. They have more “soul”. That sounds a bit racist to me!
Thank you for the kind words. It means a lot to me. Now stop reading and get back to work!
Thank you Joseph. I dig your music, too. I have found that making my own “music” lifts me out of dark places, at least temporarily. Keep on creating new music. It helps.
Yes it helps a little, temporarily.
If you’re referring to Riffler Flow, that’s the app name.
Very interesting, Paul. Good energy, too. Could you pls have Hamlet holding up a ping pong paddle instead of a skull. Better for these ambiguous times we live in.
I tried a few AI art apps. I typed "Hamlet holding a ping pong paddle". Apparently, AI doesn't seem to know much about Shakespeare. I'm not surprised, though. Neither do I. Oh well, I thought the picture was sort of amusing. Thanks for listening.
Sounds great @Paulieworld. I get the Andy Summers vibe too. I had to try some AI Hamlet with a ping-pong paddle and with a little editing got this.
