SO, in short - the OP-1 Field is f--king incredible and everything I hoped it would be. Yeah, that sounds sappy and corny, but holy sh-t! After all these years of wanting to own an OP-1 and then an OP-1 Field, I'm definitely far from disappointed!

The fact I can record directly into a DAW on my iPad makes it even better! My "weapon of choice" for recording directly onto the iPad is Logic Pro for iPad. It doesn't just recognise the USB-C signal. It actually lists the OP-1 Field by name as an input automatically! 😱 Add to that the Mastering Assistant, and I can churn out tracks as fast as I can create them.

All that being said, there are two nitpicks I have with the OP-1 Field. First of all, it requires a laptop/desktop in order to access its internal file structure to load samples, back up tapes, etc. I had to finance a cheap Windows laptop to get the job done, but it works perfectly fine with said laptop.

And the other nitpick is the price. I would say that, while I do consider the OP-1 Field to be fairly priced, it's still f--king expensive. 😂 But I'd be lying if I said it wasn't worth it. Zzounds really is the mutts nutts with interest-free 12-month financing.

The OP-1 Field is definitely not a toy by any means. It is FUN , like playing with a toy, but it is a professional piece of kit at the end of the day. It's also the fastest method (disclaimer - for me personally) I've ever used to get ideas down into audio format. I can't remember the last time I've produced a full six-track EP within the span of a week, let alone be able to create two tracks within the span of a day. Now that I'm comfortable with the OP-1 Field, I can move super lightning fast within it!

All these years I've tried to avoid getting an OP-1 and then the OP-1 Field. I tried to replicate its workflow one way or another on the iPad and iPhone. Sure I can try to impose limitations on myself when working on iOS as well as use plugins like Reelbus and BitJuggler to give me a more Lofi aesthetic, but it's just not the same. Imposing those limitations and then trying to work within said limitations on iOS isn't really all that fun for me, lol.

Whereas the OP-1 Field has that delicious Lofi aesthetic (depending on what tape style you choose to work with) already built in without me having to reach for a plugin (I avoided using the Studio Tape style on the EP linked above since the tape noise isn't really all that prominent if at all).

The OP-1 Field doesn't have any internal MIDI sequencing, which for me is a boone rather than a hindrance. Sometimes when I have a musical idea, I load NS2, then load Obsidian, surf for a piano preset, then create a MIDI clip, and then either lose inspiration or forget exactly what the melodic idea was in the first place. And imagine me trying to wrestle with a MIDI keyboard just to play in the idea.

With the OP-1 Field, I have a piano loaded on synth patch 8 ready to play whenever I need to record a melody. I simply flip the switch to "on", go to my "ideas" tape, and play in a new idea. I use the "loop in" button to set the marker after each idea so in case a new one comes along, I can play it right in no problem.

Stay tuned, because soon I will begin my second EP, and it'll be a bit of a collaborative effort in a separate interactive thread. Cheers all.

  • One other thought I just had - the OP-1 Field seems perfectly suited with the performing musician in mind. I know my way around a piano very well, so the device is very much second nature to me regarding creating on it.

Brilliant! Yeah battery life of ipads etc definitely makes them a lot less mobile than would be ideal.

If there was anyone TE had in mind from this forum when they made this thing, it would be you man. It is a natural extension of yourself, totally second nature to your production and musical capabilities. Tarekith solidified my choice but you made me confident that this thing is the most awesome DAWless synth+drum+sampler+more machine available. Would 32 keys be better for the price, but it would totally change the size, so I have to say it is a 10/10 machine for a 10/10 producer and musician.

This is the coolest diary I’ve yet to see for my Musical journeys online and thanks for sharing so much with us. Your EP is awesome and I hope to hear more; maybe even a tutorial or music channel dude! You’re an OP1f virtuoso Jim

  • Hey everybody, there's a new Op-1field update- 1.5.0 that adds a new effect called Terminal. It's bit crusher sample rate reducer with a "model" parameter. I've been having a blast using the value LFO with a square wave to modulate the model parameter. It sounds fantastic.
Also there is a new feature called merge/drop which I haven't checked out yet, and bug fixes.

    https://teenage.engineering/downloads/op-1/field

  • Nice, thanks for the heads up! I hope merge drop speeds up tape editing!

  • ...that's what she saw. 🤣 Okay, onto the replies...

@dreamcartel Cheers mate. :) Thank you so much.

@abf A new effect? A new way to merge tape tracks?! Looks like I bought the OP-1 Field at the right time! This is mindblowingly good. (Been hoping for something like a bitcrusher and sample rate reducer to subtly spice up the drums. I love that crunch!)

@Tarekith Tape editing is a load of fun though even if it takes a little longer than editing in a DAW. :) I feel like I'm really digging in and editing and such.

    @klownshed A great find mate!

I'm reading over at the op forum that merge is possibly buggy. @jwmmakerofmusic

Apparently the merge/drop only works within the project you are working on. But it is going to be very useful for me, mixing a verse, for instance, merge/drop, then mix the chorus down, merge/drop etc.

I think the Terminal sounds excellent.

Eh, that's why bugfixes exist. If a bugfix is released, please definitely post about it here in this diary. :) All part of the experience.

I'm inclined to wholeheartedly agree! Amazing for adding subtle sauce to drums or producing hard electro basslines or...anything else really!

In a few minutes I'm going to open a new thread here (and link to it here) and make the next EP a more collaborative effort. You'll see what I mean. :)

I swear, this EP is so much fun to make, especially since I have you lot to steer my creativity in new directions I've never tried before  , but it's definitely turning out to be one of the darkest EPs I've ever produced. 😨 The first track ( @abf 's) is about AI slowly taking over the world but human creativity persevering. The second ( @chrka 's) was to be Post Punk, and while it is in the spirit of Post Punk, I made a rather juvenile vent song about an ex-friend who, after four years of trying to help him, really couldn't give a sh-t about me. His real name isn't "Elijah", but that's the song's title.

Now I'm working on some sort of experimental Lofi for the third track as per @HotStrange 's direction.

Again, I'm really f--king enjoying myself! I just didn't expect this EP to dive into more dark territory. However, I'm not complaining. ;) I think it's about time I churned out something that isn't so "cheery", lol.

  • So far your OP EP sounds fantastic. It's a lot of fun for the rest of us being able to participate a little bit.

    Thank you so much mate.

Well, I'm having a panic at the moment. My OP-1 Field produces no sound in tape mode, synth mode, nor drum mode. (Strange enough, album mode still works.) I've tried the volume knob both with speaker and with my headphones attached. I've tried loading different tapes in hopes it would work. I turned the device on and off. It worked just fine this morning when I finished @rottencat 's request.

I searched online for an answer and I really don't want to do a factory reset. I don't know what the f--k to do here. I did write TE about this.

EDIT - I'm a fucking idiot. I had Nitro master effect on, and the "lowpass" filter was turned all the way down. Fml, I'm an idiot, lol.

  • Okay, moving past my idiotic blunder, I decided to take a small break from producing the EP! Now I'm aiming for a December 26th release.

Meanwhile, I recently saw "The Boy and the Heron" with one of my besties, and this song cannot get unstuck from my head, so I decided to start a remix of it.

  • The second EP is released, and I'm rather proud of it!

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/58931/jwm-the-audiobus-friends-ep-created-in-the-op-1-field-mastered-in-lp4i#latest

Now I'm no Michiru Aoyama by releasing an album daily, but the OP-1 Field has proven to be the swiftest way of getting the music I hear in my head down into some form of audio, at least for me personally, ymmv, and the other common catchphrases. 🤪

I started and finished the EP in 6 days! Usually a 5-track EP takes me a week and a half in Koala if I rush making the tracks. This is 7-tracks (well, 6 tracks and an intro). Oh and during the creation of this EP, I also did this remix...

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/58894/joe-hisaishi-spinning-globe-remix-on-my-op-1-field#latest

So I actually did 7 tracks and an intro track in 6 days. Just that the remix is of copywritten material and thus I'm not keen to release it on a platform lest I get hit with a copyright strike. 😬

We were at 20°F this morning, I feel your pain. I got the OP-1F just when it was getting cold out and all I want to do is take it places outside to make music.

I don’t have the time to be any more prolific than that. Plus when I get an idea I think I can make into a finished song I kind of go into another music making mode and run with it and work on for ages. Sometimes they come together really quickly but a really quick song will still take a few weeks.

Whoa, and I thought my various workflows were chaotic. 😂 My workflow goes something like this...

I form either a 4-bar loop or 8-bar loop (sometimes 16-bar loop). I take a rest and have a little weed. Then I really dig in. "No! That goes over there you fool (referring to myself). Damn it, rerecord that! Noo damn it! Put that over there! Why did god give me such limited brain capacity?! Jim, can't you do better than that?! Sigh, blast this irritating brain. Wait...I have a new idea! Ooo, this will shake up the arrangement a bit. Oh ffs! How'd you think forgetting to switch to an empty track would assist in forming the new idea further?! GAAAH YOU FOOL, NOW I HAVE TO REDO THAT!"

And under a couple hours later, I master in Logic Pro and voila! I have a new track! It's sort of like giving birth. 🤪😂🤣 And this workflow applies to the OP-1 Field, and Koala, and NS2, and Gadget, and...

 Hi. My name is Jim, and I've been clean for about.....30 minutes.
