“Handsome Pedro” - post-punk, political track done on Logic 4 iPad .
Hello friends,
I just finished a track I’d love to share with you. It’s the first track I finish 100% on Logic iPad.
Would love to hear your comments. Thanks for listening and being such a supportive group! 🙌
Geek stuff:
Recorded, mixed and mastered on Logic iPad.
Cigar Box guitar and bass with Tonex amp sims (user contributed tones).
Drums are my first go with Logic drummer: Drum Machine Designer triggering a Drumdrops “GlamRock” sample library. I got a nice groove out of Logic drummer which I then turned to drum patterns for final tweaking. I think it’s a very natural result.
Mastered using Logic’s Mastering Assistant: what a pleasant surprise!. It sounds good!. The eq makes the track sound clearer, louder and punchier without overdoing it. I’m using the transparent setting.
Lyrics and video theme:
“Handsome Pedro” is Pedro Sánchez, Spanish president from the socialist party. He is handsome as hell and the far-right bloody hates him.
There were recently demonstrations against the recently re-elected goverment where they went full-throttle and exhibited all sorts of fascist claims and behaviors. The Franco-era fascist eagle flag (bird flags…) and callings for a second civil war to overthrow the goverment. Exactly what happened on 1936 and led Spain to a dark 40 year long fascist regime. Sounds similar to the Trumpist attack on the capitol?. Obviously, same shit.
The right started calling him “perrosanchez” which means “dog”. But in a brilliant move, Pedro embraced the dog metaphor and became “perrosanxe”. Thus the dog theme… Note I didn’t even vote for the guy but we’re talking about bloody democracy.
Some people think you shouldn’t mix music and politics. Fine by me, don’t do it. I think it’s a great way to get stuff off your chest.
Comments
Good stuff, love the vibe and the choice of sounds, the guitars are great. Your vocals are excellent, and very clear in the mix.
A lot of effort also went into the video, which turned out really well.
Thanks Richard!. 🙌
It’s actually just one CGB guitar. It’s usually tuned open G (g-d-g) but I tuned it (c#-g-c#) which made it sound interesting, a bit Sonic-Youth kind of. I’m really digging Tonex, very fast to try different amps.
I recorded some random stuff in Logic using the clips/loop view and then arranged it into a song. I love recording in loop mode, it’s liberating, really glad Logic incorporated it.
@richardyot if I recall correctly you’ve been using Logic/GarageBand drummer extensively. Right?. Silly me I thought it was some gimmicky thing and had always avoided it. Maybe because of the cartoonish characters on the desktop version… Turns out it’s actually great, has a very natural swing to it, feels more like an actual drummer playing,
@tahiche I've been using the Drummer since it was first introduced in GarageBand back in 2016. I probably use it on half my songs, and the other half I do the drums myself. Sometimes the Drummer is perfect, but there are times when I need more control to get exactly what I want and that's when I'll look to doing the drums myself. When the Drummer is right for the song though, it's really good and saves a lot of time.
Nice one! Cigar box sounds great.
Don’t care for any political stuff, but the song is really good. Another one that makes me 30nyears younger. All is great, the voice is excellent, the sound is super good, not in you face. I especially love the drums. I have no clue how you could 8mprove this one, it is perfect as it is.
Feeling lucky to have been one of the first to hear this one few days back! I already gave you my opinion, but will repeat here: Loving the songwriting, the production and more importantly the theme and tone of your lyrics and obviously your stance. I am 200% behind you. Hoping @sevenape will have a listen, I am sure he will relate to the theme. Great video !
Can't wait to hear (y)our next release 😉
Oh, wow, you shouldn’t have. But thanks 🙏 🤗
How did you know I was handsome? Now I’m blushing 😊
Really cool song and video. I had to rewind and listen again after reading the "geek stuff" and seeing that you used a cigar box guitar. It gave me the idea/inspiration to play around with the cigar box guitar kit that I put together 4 or 5 years ago. It was in the clearance section at Barne's and Nobles for $5:)
Great job! Well done!🤘🏻
Dude. Sounds rad! I’m into it. Nice work! Kinda makes me want to re-explore post punk territory again.
Dude what the hell this is GREAT! I’m a big big post punk fan and this hits the nail on the head. Fantastic my friend 👏
Also all these posts about the mastering assistant is making me want to download Logic again I just don’t have the free space until I get a new iPad.
Oh yes, the mastering assistant just does its thing right. If your mix has some Eq flaw it’s very likely that you’re not aware of it, and consequently you wouldn’t fix it yourself during mastering. So this is like having someone with “objective” ears and it knows that the song is a bit boomy at around 160hz, lacks high end or whatever, as compared to the “standard”.
Thank u for the nice words!.
BTW it was @JanKun who mentioned the term “post-punk” first, it hadn’t even crossed my mind. And I thought “hell yeah, that’s a great compliment, love that reference” so post-punk it is!. A mate of mine even said it reminded him of Sisters Of Mercy which I think is bonkers.
Total success on this one. Listened and watched twice.
I liked this too. Coincidentally, I have recently finished reading (actually listening to an audiobook) For Whom the Bell Tolls, the famous Hemingway novel about incidents in the Spanish civil war. I was pretty wrapped up in it and the parallels with our current time are unsettling for sure.
Thanks! I wonder how it does with more noisy and experimental music? Only one way to find out I reckon haha.
Do you have more music posted anywhere?
Sure, there are some iPad-made songs on my YouTube channel. https://youtube.com/@tahiche.?si=7Rj-gcOWdaCgafuH for some reason I think making videos to go with the tunes is a good idea although it can be distracting and opinionated…
Then I have a Spotify album : https://open.spotify.com/artist/08F12d7DvvfuH2XsEGAeJV?si=OY3t8sJbTCG4_tu69-f3iA
I need to open a Distrokid account but can’t settle on the name. What do you think of “Mig Buff”?.
Need to get me a distrokid account as well. I’m only uploading to SoundCloud now but my new project is gonna go up on Bandcamp (and eventually other services).
Just subscribed to your YouTube channel! Some good stuff on there. I’m trying to get better at making videos to my music as well. Do you edit them on the iPad as well?
Also that’s a fantastic name!
Oh, I need to thank everyone!. You people are the best!. To receive feedback from colleagues is so rewarding 🙌🤟🤟
And it’s soooo fun to play. Just takes the brain out of the equation, it’s like pure gut!. 🙌 @Dham do play around with your CGB, you’ll love it!.
Thank u so much, means a lot!. I’m very happy with the drums so very glad you mention. Like I said it’s Logic drummer mostly and and excellent “GlamRock” sample library from Drumdrops. Worth checking out.
😂😘
Morale boost! . You’re a sort of legend around here!.
The Spanish Civil war is tragic and fascinating. People forget, even more so in Spain, that it was a coup d'etat. Specially the right, they purposely bend the truth and present 1936 as 2 factions or sides that went to war. Total bullshit, a democratically elected goverment was military overthrown which caused a devastating civil war. Europe and USA let it happen, they were so worried about communism that anything else, including a fascist regime, sounded like an ok idea. Inevitably this led to letting nazism grow and the Second World War.
Sounds familiar to what is going nowadays?. When you don’t like the outcome of an election, just say it’s rigged, the fake media is corrupt, that they’re communist puppies… whatever bullshit comes to mind. Following that “impecable” logic, If democracy is rotten, we’re better off without it. Bring back some order and decency, Make Whatever Great Again. Oh man, it’s exhausting…
I wish I could sing in Spanish, these right-wing nuts don’t understand English 😂 . But I hate how I sound singing in my native language!.
Keep it between us. I just blatantly rip-off YouTube videos and do a collage kind of thing. Given my public reach it’s very unlikely I’ll get sued, will be good news if it happens!.
Nowadays I use LumaFusion but I’d recommend CapCut, it’s free and it’s got some really cool effects. There’s also Glitch Clip, Glitch Studio… to make shitty videos look shitty 😂
Very nice. The vocals remind me of Frank Black, going back and forth between singing and speaking.
I have JamCam which is also good for that kinda stuff. I have CapCut too but I’ve never used it. At least not yet.
Frank Black is the G.O.A.T. When people argue about Beatles vs Rolling Stones I don’t even listen. Pixies are the best band ever. Big full stop.
Wanted to say the amazingly talented @JanKun and myself worked on a song together which is 99% ready and I’m very excited about. I knew I wanted to collab, as doing it all yourself can be limiting, but the process and result exceeded my expectations. It was so fun!. And the result is so rewarding.
So let’s do more collaborations!.
Fantastic song and video. I really enjoyed it (not only as a dog owner). The topic is also very important and a good reason to worry about
I like the song a lot, and the music video even more, it’s brilliant. 🤩 But I don’t like the politics in the song, of course, there is nothing against others doing it. Especially “Another Brick in the Wall" and those endorsing pacifism.
This is outstanding! Super catchy little tune and expertly produced. Quite hilarious, too. It reminds me of the first time I saw Devo on Saturday Night Live. I was sure what I had just witnessed, but I liked it.
I also make shoegaze and post punk in Logic for iPad so it’s great to hear your track. I love it! The outro is so post punk-esque it’s amazing.
And of course, music has always been a great political tool 😉
Now I'm not one for politics, but I really like this song.
Love how it sounds, how it's sung, how it's mixed and mastered. Yep, I love LP4i's Mastering Assistant. Somehow it gets everything juuuust right.
Are you using only stock Logic instruments? Got any links to your music? I love both genres so I’d love to hear 🤩
