  • I was reading that last night. Great article! I always enjoy reading up on Brian Eno. :) I'm still on the fence whether or not to buy Oblique Strategies or not.

  • I’d really like to see a documentary or well-written article about his time and work in the studio with U2.

Here’s a few nuggets from YouTube. Not all about Eno, but he’s in there 😊

    Excellent! That'll work!

  • Very good article. Thanks!

I’ve always enjoyed this 1974 interview
where a pre-stardom Chrissie Hynde is more than a little weirded-out by Eno:

    Probably Hynde bullshitting.

Either way, the ending is disturbing and that kind of thing wasn’t abnormal then.

BTW @jwmmakerofmusic if you look at the appstore there are a few apps containing those Oblique Strategies cards and at least one is free. Maybe handy to have in app form for quick access.

The whole interview feels like a weird cocktail of art school ethos, drug use, and record label PR probably.

Make it weird and say something shocking. His mate Bowie was an expert at this. The interview is a kind of "performance" in itself.

I remember reading an interview with him where he berated himself for his behavior when he started out in the music industry, and how he did everything possible to make people sit up and take notice of him. He’s a little less combative and weird in his more recent interviews.

Yes, he’s not known for willingness to open up or showing a sense of humor, but I gave him kudos for appearing as ‘Father Eno’ in Father Ted.

MGMT has a song about him called Brian Eno and it’s hilarious. Always wondered what the man himself thought about it. It’s poking fun but in a genuine way with respect to his work overall so I don’t think he would hate it but you never know lol

Good song from my favourite MGMT album.

They wanted him to produce it but he had never heard of them. So they made a song about tracking down a vampire Brian Eno. 😂

It was really brief - he was introduced to Ted at a priests’ convention.

Hence the 1978 ambient album "Music For A Priests' Convention".

Sometimes that’s my favorite album and sometimes it’s their self-titled. It’s been all hits so far though. Stoked for their new album! Due in February I think? The 2 lead singles are great.

I definitely think it was performance by both.
    They were already acquainted.
I remember reading an article from the same time period when Eno, Hynde, John Cale, and “an American cowboy actor” were all hanging out in the studio during the making of the album Fear.
Forever, I was intrigued by the identity of the “American cowboy actor”. Who could it be?
Decades later, Cale mentioned that it was Doug McClure from “The Virginian”
However, for me, McClure’s greatest role was in the forgotten 80s sitcom “Out Of This World”
