Help me build my next OP-1 Field EP!
Okay, so I'm ready to start my next OP-1 Field EP, but this time it'll be a "collaborative" effort in a sense! The first six "entries" will be the basis for the EP, where I'll create the intro track myself, and then six other tracks in conjunction with your answers. Here's what to fill out per person...
- Key
- Scale (it can't be a microtonal scale since the OP-1 Field, afaik, doesn't have that feature (yet, we'll see what firmware will be released in the future).).
- BPM (can't be lower than 40bpm nor higher than 220bpm as that is the max range the OP-1 Field has)
- Genre (you can be specific, vague, or "whatever you want". Also note these tracks will be instrumental.)
- 4|4 time, or 12|8 time
- Anything you want to add, thoughts, ideas, etc.
Your name will appear in the track listing as "JWM and (insert username) - (insert title)". And remember, this is meant to be good fun, not serious. Let's have a bit of fun!
Comments

Lol! You definitely gotta answer the questions above mate. Got three so far. 😁
Thanks @abf @chrka and @HotStrange . I'll get to work after my piano gig tonight!
This is such a fun idea.
Key: Bb
Scale: Locrian
BPM: 101.5
Genre: Dub House
Time Signature: 4/4
Extra: You can only record when you are stoned
OK.
Okay, I'm home, I'm high, and it's time to answer some great folks here.
@abf Oooo, I like "making things spooky". This'll be a fun track to build.
@chrka Oooo, Postpunk sounds fun. I'll raid op1.fun for guitar samples.
@HotStrange Excellent, although I don't think "F# Maj7" is a scale but rather a chord, but I can definitely do the scale of F# Major.
@pfrf I do love to have fun. ^_^
@michael_m Hehe, I am right now as a matter of fact. This strawberry shortcake sh-t is stronger than the tangy banana. 🤣
@rs2000 Bro, lol. You're only answering one of the six questions mate. You have to answer all six, lol. Christsake, are you high right now mate? 🤪 I want whatever you're toking, lol. (I'm being facetious.)
This last one is default operation mode for Jim I think, no? 😂
Pretty f--king much! 🤣 Rofl!
Wasn’t answer number 1 for the key? I don’t think I said it was a scale. I think we’re misunderstanding
F# is a key, major is a scale but F#Maj7 is a chord. It is not a scale or a key, that's what he means!
Oops you’re right, I mean F# but major scale or to use f#maj7 in some way bc I think it sounds nice lol
Yeah, FMaj7 for the win!
It’s the diatonic I chord in F# Major when you look at it from a jazz perspective.
Am I too late?
If not:
g harmonic minor
60 bpm
ambient jungle
4/4 with kicks on the 1,7 and 13
Does the Field offer the option of variable lengths per track? If so, put a couple snares on an 11 bar loop.
Does the Field offer a chance option per track? If so, put in a bunch of closed hats with a 20% chance of triggering.
So far, I have @abf , @chrka , @HotStrange , @michael_m and @rottencat . Room for one more request!
Thanks Bianca. You're my sixth and final. Just to clarify, what is "Yo" for the scale bestie?
Yo Scale
The Yo scale is a scale used specifically in traditional Japanese folk songs and early music. It is often described as a “bright” sounding scale because it does not contain any minor notes.
The Yo Scale Formula: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
You should do an ambient album, I’ve heard that’s popular here.
I will take my chance on a possible bonus song
Key : A
Scale : Harmonic minor
BPM 180 Bpm
Genre : Neo classical
Ah now I see. I may do a collab with @JanKun or at least pick his brain a bit since he lives in Japan and knows the music better than me.
@Tarekith We shall definitely see after this EP I'm forming.
Oh lol I missed this earlier. We posted at the same time. Just got home. Sure Neo Classical may be good for an introduction sort of piece.
Looking forward to hearing your EP.
It’s 50/50. 50% make it and 50% hate it 😂
Hi Jim ! While it's true I have been living for quite some time in Japan already, I would never dare to see myself as an expert in Japanese traditional music. So, I am afraid I cannot be of any help for you on this one.
If you want to get familiar with the way the Yo scale was used in Japan, take the time to listen to some Gagaku or Shōmyō. These are two very old musical styles from the Heian period, making intensive use of the scale.
I am not that much into this kind of challenge, but if I was in your shoes and had to work with the Yo Scale, i would first try to immerse myself into the scale for hours with all the instruments or sounds at my disposal. Then once feeling comfortable, I would start using it to create melodies / riffs / hooks (imo that's were pentatonic scales shine) as a starting point for the composition. From there, my approach would be at all cost to avoid trying to sound anything like Japanese. So I would forbid myself to go for Japanese arrangements or instrumentation in order to develop something very personal. Just my personal approach, so pinch of salt etc... etc...
Good luck !
@ecou Thanks mate. It'll be a good one for sure.
@HotStrange Lol! 😂 I'll make it more "listener-friendly" rather than "challenging" material.
@JanKun That's some excellent advice. I'll see what Gagaku and Shōmyō music sound like, but will try to apply the scale in the genre Bianca requested (which luckily is not Traditional Japanese music, phew). ☺️
There’s inspiration all around.
