Upgrading to iOS8
As you probably know by my recent postings, I just started out with iOS music last week. I just spent a lot of money buying lots of great music apps. I want to upgrade to iOS8, but I'm not sure after reading some of the recent postings to this forum if all of my new apps will work. For those who have made the plunge, is it worth it to upgrade now? I'm using Cubasis as my main DAW, along with Gadget, Guitarism, Drum Jam, Korg synths, Autria synths, and others. Also how is AudioBus and IAA working in iOS8.
How's the weather out there?
Comments
Wait. Or do it. Seems it's unsettled either way. I'm mixing my album in auria now and have no desire to make any sweeping changes. I haven't had any issues with auria or any effects I've used on 7.1.2. I'd like it to stay that way so no music related updates for now for me.
@mrufino1 Looking forward to hearing your new album. :-)
Korg synths do not work yet. Some of the Arturia ones don't - so - you cannot use those with AB in iOS 8 yet. So, don't update to iOS 8 yet. :-)
There is an ongoing issue with 7.1.2 that seems to have developed also over the past couple of days in that it now appears that AB will only work with 7.1.2 with no wifi on. But, with that being said, it does appear - for the most part - to be working still with that workaround in place. There was an issue with Cubasis AB sidebar transport controls not appearing however. That appeared to have been fixed, but is now broken again. 2nd workaround - switch between apps with the AB sidebar. E.g. start Cubasis recording, switch back to the sound source app - synth or whatever - and start playing. Switch back to Cubasis to stop. I need to re-report this to Cubasis as broken.
Transport control issue thusly reported to Steinberg again.

You can hear the one we just released, www.shutterwax.com, also on iTunes, cdbaby, spotify, etc. the album is called dig me a well and was mixed entirely in auria. I believe there's a video or two on YouTube as well in our channel. There's a reason I'm the bassist and engineer and the marketing is left to others in the band! Thanks for your interest, enjoy it! (Anyone else too).

Just listened to it. Great music!
@MusicInclusive Sounds like iOS 8 is a bitch. Thanks for the heads up. I just bought a bunch of apps. Thanks for saving me the headache!
I also have a question about upgrading. I'm on an iPad 2 for the next few months, and reports about performance with iOS 8 seem to suggest sluggishness among other things. I've already updated many music apps but stopped updating them when it became clear I shouldn't update to iOS 8. My question is can I continue to update apps without updating to iOS 8? I'm still updating apps for my son on my 3rd generation iPod touch without any issues. I'm pretty sure that device is running iOS 5. I'm assuming I can update the apps, but you know how assumptions can go. Thanks for any help on this. I don't want any significant changes to my workflow.
It seems there are dangers in upgrading apps that have been adapted for iOS 8 and the latest Audiobus while remaining on iOS 7. The safest course is to stop updating anything you rely on and wait until everything is sorted out in a few months...
@PaulB I noticed that if you update a App that is iOS 8 ready and also has the new AudioBus SDK and you are still using iOS 7 you could run into some issues.
The whole App system between iOS 7 and iOS 8 is buggy at the moment.
Yep. It's going to stay that way for me too. I'm sticking with AB1 on iOS 7 on an iPad 2...

Yep, too late for some of my apps. The challenge is when an app has some bugs and the update cover bugs solved and iOS compatibility into the same package.
So the "russian roulette" concept is a perfect image for what is happen right now.
As others said, better to stay put until things start working again as they should. If you're using one app at a time that might not be an issue but if you have established configurations of apps upgrading = trouble. I see you're just starting so you are probably gonna be ok either way. Just check around whether the apps you're intending to use work on ios8 and with AB/iaa. I'm on iPad Air but honestly have no reason/desire to update whatsoever.
There's a nice DM1 update available but seems like I can only get it if I update to iOS8. This sucks!
Yup. I just figured that out about DM1. Irritating, but my guess is that in about one or two weeks, enough stuff will be working on iOS 8 that upgrading will make sense. It shouldn't be too long to wait - unless you rely on one particular mission critical app and it's taking a long time to get there.
Yes DM 1 update is iOS 8 only. This is not good at all. I have no intention of updating to iOS 8 any time soon - plenty that I use regularly isn't there yet - and some may not be for quite a while if at all. DM1 is one of the ones I use a fair amount. Already commented on their FB page with a request for 7.1.2 compatibility.
The sound in DM1 latest update on iPad Air w. iOS 8 is completely trashed (others w. Air also got this). Kinda like the sound in their Musyc app is completely distorted/trashed on iPad Air/iOS 8. So a new update for DM1 is a must, and hopefully they'll restore iOS 7 compat. in time for that update. Seems weird to exclude all other iOS versions but the latest anyways
Somehow I doubt anyone who went the route of requiring iOS 8 is going to add iOS 7 support later on. Interesting decision though, I'm sure it'll save them tons of support load.
DO NOT UPGRADE to ios8. Audiobus for some reason(maybe my fault, maybe not?), doesn't recognise the coding in ios8 and unless a back up was saved into a computer(not the cloud!), you will not be able to go back to previous ios(7.1.2 in my case). So save yourselves the heartbreak of losing the ability to REC using Audiobus and wait until Audiobus get busy codifying for ios8.
Beethovens Ghost...now Unemployed!
These combined issues with the iOS 8 update - apps no longer supporting 7.1.2, apps not ready for 8, 7.1.2 not continuning to work as expected - are making me seriously consider quitting iOS music making altogether, selling most of my iDevices and related gear and returning to the desktop entirely. Seriously. Not happy this morning with the above factoring in as well.

I fully understand. You might want to wait a month or so before selling your stuff. Things can only get better.
According to the cogs at BareBones studio wher I live, I am the hardest working musician on the planet. In less than a year my soundcloud account is full, Dropbox is stuttering and my iPad air is creaking at the seams with audio that I can't store elsewhere. So I am prolific. My writers block lasts all of 20minutes! So this problem of ios8 is killing me. Any ideas which could get me using Audiobus with Cubasis, Thor, etc...would maybe really be a lifesaver. This has depressed the hell out of me. And it's not as if I can practise my acoustic gtr to stuff already written because that's already Ben done. I can get no better with guitaring to the projects as I've reached the optimum in that regard. I need to be writing...NEED!!!!
Beethovens Ghost (on Soundcloud) if anyone wants to hear just how stunning the iPad(with apps) alone can be. But not anymore.
Maybe some day I'll have resources to get a PC. Then I could do what I was born to do. But until then, I'll happily work with iPads.
Thought of selling IPad for PCs/Mac myself but.....
@Sebastian :-) It's not been a great weekend / week start :-)
I know you guys are obviously keenly looking at things. Thanks. Just not expecting some of these specific issues to happen in a row.
I hope it'll get better, but, apps not yet ported concern me - beyond the ones we know are already in the process of being (I've contacted most of the devs of apps I use regularly via the form - and had replies from most but not all). Some of those are apps that I use my iPad specifically for :-/ - independently - but even as part of a larger music rig.
The world is not ending. Unless you just lost a ton of work because you can no longer get the music in for the TV show you're scoring by 11am this morning that can only be composed on your ipad using IAA and audiobus and then you lose your house because the mortgage payment depended on that check from that TV studio are things really that bad? These issues will get solved.
And why would one assume not @mrufino1 ? Had this happened some weeks back I would have potentially lost considerable money - yes. For some this is a business - not a hobby.
I understand, but if it is a business, surely there are backup plans? I am a bassist and have a backup bass, in case there's a problem with my main instrument. If my ipad stopped working, I'd mix in reaper on my 7 year old Mac. Or book studio time. Or, if my business relied on my ipad that much, I'd have it in airplane mode and not touch an update of any app or so until the project is done.
A musician I work with regularly who does a ton of session work from his studio is still doing it on protools 8 (I think, may still be on 7) on snow leopard, with no intention of changing. In fact, he just went to snow leopard a few months ago so he could sync his ipad, was on leopard before that.
I'm not trying to start any fight, so let's not, but it is not a new idea to avoid upgrades (any upgrades) if you have major projects going on. I understand your point, which is different than some, that you stayed on 7.1.2 and apps are not working with it, but if they were working before updates, then they would still work now had the updates been left undone (anytune has not been updated in a while on my ipad now so I can retain the function I bought it for). I updated some apps too before I saw your posts about it not just being ios8 causing issues (thank you for that) and have since stopped updating any music apps that I may need for the immediate future, but if one I updated doesn't work then I'll have to find another way to do what I need until it's sorted.
I'm happy I'm just doing this for fun, as a hobby because otherwise I would be pretty pissed with this situation.
The iOS8 betas have been out for a while, I'm curious what the excuse is from devs for not supporting the new OS or even worse, dropping support for a one year old OS.
I think it should be pretty clear at this point that if you're serious about music you absolutely cannot rely only on the iPad.
And how about, just for one moment imagining that nothing has changed in the ios world. That there's no such thing as io8 and we can keep enjoying the super stable ios7. Aaaaaaah, it's great isn't it, to see everything working as it should
All this reminds me of a bunch of kids around the table with a box of out of date chocolate in the middle. Mummy said 'don't touch the chocolate or it will make you sick'. Ah well. Hopefully not too late for some, you can still stick a hand in your mouth.
I never worked in a studio that upgraded ANYTHING that was working unless there was a really compelling business case to do so (like, someone wants to book two weeks but only if we have the newest version of Protools). Actually, I've never worked in any business that updated anything unless there's a compelling reason.
If you make money from your device, and it's working, why in the world would you mess with it? Especially something like an iOS update where roll back is known to be a total mf?
