Disable automatic updates, do not upgrade your apps and make backups via iTunes. Then only change if you're sure you need to change anything. Also: have a test device ready that is just a mirror of your production device. That's how I'd do it if I were doing contract work as an iOS musician.
Also: Jail break the living out of your devices so you're able to downgrade whenever necessary. But please don't tell me and then ask for support.

Not sure if you are reading what Derek keeps saying- he has NOT updated to iOS 8 and is having problems with iOS 7.12.
Not upgrading works, but is IMO risky (or very risky for PCs) when it comes to a device that is connected to the internet. iOS8 contains important security updates and fixes in components that cannot be upgraded separately from the OS e.g Safari.
Anyway, I actually don't have any problems myself, was just making some observations. :-)
The only solution I can think about pro musicians is trying to buy/hire iPads running on iOS7 and restoring a backup on it.
Maybe not the best solution, but still a quick one.
Has anyone here upgraded to iOS8 on ipad2 or ipad3? From ios 6 to 7 my ipad3 responds fine, but I fear with iOS8 (actually I'll wait and update to 8.something) ,it will not catch up....
@Korakios![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
iPad 3 here on iOS 8. Works fine, and I have a feeling it is slightly faster
Well, after doing some tests, here are my results about apps upgraded to iOS8 on iPad4 running iOS7.1.2
Nave looks working OK, through speaker or recording to Audioshare (even with AUFX effects). I had to reinput Nave hwn I changed the output.
Nlog Synth Pro looks working OK, both Input and Effects slot, speaker and Audioshare recording. Sometimes, I get no sound, but it came back restarting AB. Harder than Nave to work with.
@Korakios I wouldn't do it. Every (other) report I've seen says it slows down iPad 2 and 3.
This weekend I tried iPad3 (from my brother in law) on iOS8 and told me it was a little slow, but I think it depends on the configuration. Try to go to Adjust and disable all unnecessary stuff running in the background (wich is a lot).
Two iPad2 more at home, and I'm affraid they will stay on iOS7.
I updated my daughters 4s to ios8 at her request. It seems to run fine. But she's not using it to make music. I'll get ios8 soon enough, but ios7 taught us to wait a bit on music production related stuff.
I also think it's important to remember that apple didn't build the iPad as a music device, and I think music production happened in spite of apple's intentions. In the early days of computer music it wasn't a whole lot different I'd imagine, but it has had a while to mature now.
I'm not saying that it doesn't suck to have stuff not work right away, but I am saying it will work eventually and anger towards developers is not going to help. Especially devs who do this for the love of it, and entitled angry attitudes may change the love of it. Any business relying on any machine better have a back up plan because machines of any kind will break. On sound gigs, we always have an extra power amp and a small behringer mixer. Worst case if everything broke is we'd run vocals through that into whatever speakers we had and the day doesn't go to crap. To me, the only thing that makes someone a. "Pro" is making things work no matter what, be it plan A, B, or Z.
I upgraded my iPhone 4S to IOS 8 immediately and it seems to work pretty well. I'm sure whenever I get an iPhone 6 I'll see a big difference in performance but it's definitely acceptable to me and I'm really finding several of the new features and enhancements very useful. I don't really do anything music related on my iPhone 4S though. I also have an iPad 3 but I have not updated that yet for many of the same reasons others on this forum are holding off.
@Zymos @Korakios Agree, as long as you don't need any iOS 8 specific feature, or an app you can't live without becomes iOS 8 only, don't update to iOS 8
@Zymos not to be talking down at anyone but he must have done something to mess up his ios set up. Yes it is not an ideal situation and yes Apple screwed it up but places like this forum and ios musician facebook group are there specifically for people to get informed before they end up in those kind of situations.
Patience and peace people. Or a large Jack and coke and the love of a good woman. Or soup. Soup is good. Or go find your grandpa (or a suitable stand-in) and ask him how he used to seduce girls with just a washboard and four broken fingers.

I've been dealing with the same thoughts myself. Hardware, if taken care of, can last 30 years. However, iPad apps have a risk EVERY YEAR of going incompatible or being abandoned. I LOVE the portability and price of iOS stuff, but I'm seriously considering a couple of solid hardware synths (or possibly going back to my laptop VST plugins) as back-ups. I've been planning on getting the new iPad Air 2 when it comes out, and I probably still will, but I'm getting weary of the yearly compatibility / app-abandonment risks with the iOS platform. The extreme portability is what keeps me hanging on. :-) I'll be watching carefully to see what happens....
Well said @audiojunkie. I feel the same way, the portability is worth almost any trade off for me. When it's not, then I'll go a different route.
There's a fresh security issue affecting Safari on iOS 7 which can lead to hacking the browser and accessing its memory (possibly more). A proof of concept exploit is also freely available, so I would be careful with browsing on non-updated iPads/iPhones.
Well, this hole has been there for almost a year, so...
I have been reading some webpages, but I couldn't clarify it. Does it work iFunbox + iOS8?
IFunbox works with iOS 8 (thank god). Just tried it this morning.
Well, some security issues are in the software for a lot of years before they are discovered and published. What matters is that it's now out and reasonably easy to exploit, I mean you can download the exploit code from the internet...
Wise words @JohnnyGoodyear and for those who live in fear of security breaches just don't go surfing stupid places and open stupid email attachments and for most part you should be ok. It's not like Apple updated their security every day anyway.
Update your idevices to iOS 8. The grass is greener on the other side. Pinky promise.

Yesterday, I emailed the PDFExpert dev (not an musical app, of course) , and app that doesn't exist anymore (right now is called PDFExpert 5), asking him for iOS8 updates, and he answered "no", and the app won't work under iOS8. He invited me to buy the new app.
Well, my brother in law is under iOS8 and the app works fine, so the grass is greener except where is black.![:( :(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
@ChrisG you're the first person I've seen who recommends switching to iOS 8. New features worth the headaches?
this may help...

Interesting approach.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I'm definitely sticking with the integration stage.

I was joking.
I'd say no it's not really worth it just yet. Give it all a few weeks and see where things are at then.
