DM1 update

    Hi everyone,
this is Pascal the lead audio developer of Fingerlab. The latest update of DM1 is iOS8 only. We are aware that some of you will be unhappy about this. Unfortunately we have had to make a choice because of iOS8 revised audio engine. We have spent a lot of time on trying to keep DM1 compatible with iOS7 but we couldn’t reach a satisfying result. Other music apps are indeed compatible with both iOS but you need to understand that each app has its own complex audio internal architecture. Very sorry for the frustration but please be patient as eventually all music apps will switch to iOS8 in the forthcoming weeks. All the best.
    Pascal

I know they are workin to fix all the distorted sounds and stereo issues on the iPad version.

Source for this? From the above email it sounded like they were ok with it.

  • It sure sounds to me like they abandoned ios 7 users indeed. So much for the consumer huh. It would be a lot of work to fix it no doubt .

Same source as the above message from Pascal. That was their response to the iOS 8 only criticism btw, not the issues we're having. Scroll down a bit https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fingerlab/292088420802006

  • Latest post from Fingerlab on their official Facebook:

"To all DM1 and Musyc users! We have had some trouble with iOS 8 and our latest updates. We have read carefully all your posts and we have identified the issues. We are happy to tell you that DM1 will be compatible with iOS7 and iOS8 and all bad sounds and stereo problems will be fix soon. We need to make some important change on the audio engine so it will take few weeks to do it right. We hope to put it online around mid-October. Thanks for your understanding."

Besides being on top of repairing all the damage courtesy Apple, it also looks like they will be able to restore iOS 7 compatibility as well.

  • that's good news, makes me happy

  • Good they're 'fessing up and owning it. Imagine it will be Christmas.

  • Nice/ Glad we are not being abandoned.

hope they fix the now broke Dropbox sample import.....so much for beta testing..

  • The latest update is rolling out "with brand new audio engine for a better cleaner, crispier sound. Compatible with iOS 8 and 7."

  • Posted this up just this second, beat me to it telecharge, if your in the u.s can you check out the new fx app, pops up after you first launch it, post updating.

  • The new fx app did not pop up for some reason or other. Let me check the storefront though.

  • Oh and this DM1 does in fact sound much better.

  • Hmm not in the us store yet under fingerlabs at least.

  • Can anyone comment on the quality of the MIDI sync on this updated version ?
(When receiving from external MIDI clock)
I wanted this for some time, but have heard the old version had pretty flaky MIDI Sync.

  • It seems better - but I think it's still off. I had it synced ok with Loopy (to my ears anyways it sounded in sync). I recorded a 2 bar loop and when it started playing back in Loopy it was off a little - had to adjust start point a bit early.

  • @Tritonman2

Thanks for checking, I noticed that it sounded slightly smoother thought it was just me, I do like some of the grit though, although some of my breaks do sound slightly better, just glad the distortion is gone.

  • I'm on 7 and the update is ok for me. Haven't checked sync yet.

  • So, another update, now with a new MIDI engine.

Hmm, the OHH pad is not working for me. Strange...

  • Cool hope sync is better in cubasis.

Excuse the foolish question, but... @all what does a 'new midi engine' mean to the most of us? And @yug the OHH seems to be working over here (Air 1/latest iOS)...

I tried a heavily syncopated track I had in Dm1 to Drumjam and sent it thru AB by way of The Might Magellan to Audioshare. I have latest IOS on ipad air.

  • Hooray! Timing is so far better. Was having an Acid party on my own with Bassline. Now, going to add some Fx, then start a virtual trip............. The only thing, is that when I add more midi clock, ie: Patterning, or DrumJam, it starts to fook up the timing on my iPAd Air 1. Never mind. Suppose slowly progress with Cubasis.

  • Yep!..... Only two apps at a time baby. Still better than it was....

  • @juanconcho - hard to believe the DM1 I knew and kind of liked had anything to do with that VERY cool jazzy beat. More songs should have that kind of beat. Nicely done, thanks for sharing :)

So to be sure I understand correctly, this was sequenced in DM1, which then served as a master for Drumjam and out to AB through Magellan's FX?

  • Thx eustressor yes that's the flow. I tried less syncopated beats with drumjam and I thought it sounded steady.

  • @juanconcho Thanks for example....very interesting. I still love DM1's big buttons :)

  • Anybody lucky syncing Cubasis via AB? I don't manage to startstop DM1 with Cubasis (Air1/iOS8).

  • DM1 works for me as an iaa instrument in cubasis and syncs well-ish for a while but it does lose it over time for sure. not as solid as patterning. I have yet to try it with AB

  • Here's the same song from Dm1 driving DJ (different kit) and Animoog, which allowed me to use the x/y pad to introduce arpeggiated notes. I fiddled with the frequency and res and drive and all the goodies. Remaster in the effect slot for AB.
