Smells Like Jazz

Can’t wait for the end of it to comment, just a few bars in and I’m already in love. Smooth vibes @Paulieworld .
Damn, it is already the end of it 😭
Thank you, Joseph. From one old hippie to another… Peace!
I’m not waiting… that rhythmic transition in the drums at 1:04 threw me, in a good way.
I’m guessing some “Session Band” app(s) helped provide a lot of the materials.
You betcha! I just give them a chart and they wail. I think I paid 5 bucks and they’re on call forever. Happy New Year, bro!
Tasty. And it does smell a bit like jazz, doesn’t it?😎 Very nice.
Thanks Mac. Happy New Year!
Excellent work Paul! What all are you using here? Some great sounds 🎶
Thank you @HotStrange ! Let me see… I started with a bass line from iBassist. I must confess, I was lazy with that part. It just repeats from start to finish. The drums were either SoftDrummer or DrumComputer. It was a step editor in any case. The drums are pretty basic. There is a simple piano part in the background that I punched in with the MIDI editor. I used an upright piano sound from either ModulePro or iM1. It sounded slightly out of tune and, for whatever reason, I liked it. I usually freeze tracks when I have something I like and I’m not very good at keeping notes. The main parts are from a few of the Session Band apps. I think those are amazing and way under appreciated. All you have to do is throw a chord sequence at it and it responds with some live session players. Just like if I had to hire some. I don’t tell them exactly what to play, and they don’t! The other “vocals” and sound effects are from several Blocs Wave packages. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening. Happy New Year!
I liked it, Paul. A rare criticism…. The drums are too loud in the mix, IMHO. diminishes the other goodies. Bass should be raised, too. Just my take, though.
Thanks Mike. It’s not really jazz. It just smells like it. I thought the look on that kid’s face was priceless!
Very well arranged track. I was transported somewhere there’s a major groove going on.
Welcome friend. Let me take your coat. That groove you speak of, well… that would be downstairs. Tell ‘em Paulie said you’re OK. Say it exactly that way. Happy New Year!
Love it. Wonderful eclectic mix of sounds! I agree that the SessionBand apps are way under-appreciated. They’re so handy and easy to whip up a backing track. I had to play a luau party and did most of the backing tracks in the ukulele SessionBand app.
This is an infectiously fun, unpredictable party. . Happy New Year!
Smooth as a Porsche 911.
Hi Dav. The Session Band apps were a major find for me. I played trumpet in high school concert band, but we never played anything cool. I don’t play horn anymore, but I would like one in my music occasionally. These are the perfect answer. I can’t control what they play, but sometimes it’s better to trust the experts. Have a wonderful New Year’s Eve. Talk to you next year.
Thanks! I’ve never tried those session band apps but I see them go on sale fairly often so I might pick a couple up sometime. Are the IAA only?
Happy new year 🎊
Welcome amigo! Just follow @scrape. He knows the password. Have a nice night!
That’s about as smooth as it gets! I appreciate that more than you will ever know. What a great way to end the year. Just follow those other two cowboys. We got plenty!
I think so, but where there’s a will there’s a way. I’m sure you’ll figure it out, but I’m here if you need anything.
@Paulieworld: Another good source of horn riffs is the “Brass Riffs” library in BeatHawk. Happy New Year to you too!
Thanks for the tip. I will check that out now. Fortunately, these apps are cheap. It’s not like buying a new synth back in the day. Be safe.
Right on, thanks Paulie!
Damn great work!!! frenq
I recently heard an appreciation that musical virtuosity is not solely about technical mastery of an instrument but can equally be applied as a measure of the abilities of someone to select and mix performance sources to create new works.
Couldn’t help but think of @Paulieworld who consistently demonstrates this virtuosity.
And I’m in for anything with jazz in the title, even if it smells.
👍🏻👍🏻 that kid is you, right? 🤓
Thank you so much. Here’s to a great new year!
Thank you so much, Andy! Mom would be so proud. I was an actual musician for most of my life. Nowadays, I see myself more as a curator. I miss playing but I like getting to bed early now.
Your comment motivated me to pull out something from the archives. It’s a little piano piece I wrote when I was sixteen. I’m just cleaning it up a bit. Hope you can listen. Happy New Year!
Smells great @Paulieworld!
I’ve never used any of those “session” apps. There’s so many of them! Any ones in particular that you’d recommend over others?
I think it’d be nice if they rolled it all into one app. I’d buy it.
