Which iPad is best for me ?
Hi, I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm on the right section for my question.
I currently use a windows laptop and reaper for my music but am seriously considering buying an iPad after I found out about loopy pro and also I am planning on travelling and need something small and portable to take with me.
On my budget I have been looking at an Apple refurbished iPad pro and would it be better to get a 3rd generation with the M1 chip with 128GB or for a similar price a 2nd generation with A12Z Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture and 512GB.
Or, would I be ok with an iPad Air ?
How much memory do I need for basic music production ?
Do I need to increase my budget and go for an M1 chip with more memory , or is the A12Z chip more than capable of coping with my requirements .
Apart from running loopy pro it would be great to have some software instruments and be able to run my guitar through it with software amp sims/effects .
Another point it might be worth mentioning is that I have ADHD and M.E so need things to be very simple and easy to use or I just end up being frustrated when I can't work out what to others might be simple problems. Hoping to get some good advice. Mark.

Definitely the M1 Pro, way, way more power on offer and will be future proof for longer.
Always get the fastest, newest version with as much storage as you can afford. The M1 chip is a good choice.
And ALWAYS get AppleCare+ coverage. You never know when a little accident will happen, which could lead to very expensive repairs.
iPad Pro M1/1TB ✅
The best iPad or anything is usually the most recent one you can afford without having to sell a kidney.
I like* (love) my Ipad Pro 11/ M2
And their refurbished models are sold at a reasonable discount but with a new battery and guaranteed just like the new models.

I was given an iPad 9th generation for Christmas. I didn't want it but am now happy to have it.
I especially like that it still uses the lightning connector and still has a headphone jack. I kind of wish it was compatible with Stage Manager, but tbh I bet I would almost never use it. All in all, I think it's a decent choice. I don't feel the need for MX / Pro performance.
I have a M2 Pro. It is very powerful but the battery life is very poor compared to my 2017 Pro.
Power at a cost.
Thanks for all your advice. I'll buy the best I can afford !
Hi,
May I add to this thread? I am currently looking into buying an iPad for use with mostly Loopy Pro (as for myself). I am just jamming/looping a bit for my own fun and am on a rather tight budget. Over here in Austria (not the one with the kangaroos, rather the one with the exploding trees) for around 200 bucks I can get something like an iPad 6 with 128 GB oder something like an iPad 8 with hardly more than 32 GB.
Besides Loopy Pro my wife and I might use the photos app a lot, some math apps for my children, YouTube-Kids-Streaming, perhaps take it with us when travelling for Google Maps and similar apps, and some occasional surfing and stuff for which our M1 MacBook Air feels to big and our iPhones too small. But really, it would be an add-on we would feel we need not much were it not for Loopy Pro.
Which one would you go for? Newer iPad with less HDD space or older iPad with more HDD space?
Thanks for any advice![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

The year 2010 I bought my first iPad, generation 1 - was extremely happy then.
Almost 14 years later and around 14 different models of iPad, I’m still extremely happy!
If money is a limited thing for you, buy an 2018 iPad Pro and probably you can have some money left for a bunch of great apps to your "new” iPad…
Good luck!
@maksibec
There are iPad 9th gen (64gb) for 289 on the German eBay as direct buy from a seller. Single core performance isn't far behind current models and at least double of the 8th gen 7th gen. Loopy doesn't do multi core, so it's almost as good as it gets for this.
I bet your account and the world would be twice as happy if you stretched them a year longer each. I really don't see the use case for this purchase pattern other than "new & shiny". I'm curious for real as to the motivation behind this.
Getting the most expensive you can afford isn't too smart with apple. Not updated on the new ipads, but the most power per cent among the Macbook Pros is the M1 that is still sold new, the price hike to the newest one isn't comparable to that much better in the long run. That said, Apple are (evil) geniouses with their pricing ladder.
I have bought 14 iPads just because I’ve gotten the money, and, three of them is still in house…
The rest have I been giving away for free to grandchildren and near relatives…
I never do tobacco, never drink alcohol and never ever use/buy drogs - a smart way to live that generates some savings for a bunch of new electronic stuffs every year…
Just seems extremely wasteful, the stuffs being made out of rare earth metals and all. But you do you, of course!
Hail Greta!
Okay boomer! Was really interested in the technical reasons for gearing up at such a rate, just extremely different. Your personal reasons for giving away stuff is not relevant in the least, bet you are one popular granddad. Sorry for OT.
Loopy Pro doesn't do multi-core TODAY, but I wouldn't rule it out for the future. When buying a new device, I think it wise to keep the future in mind.
Small correction; the 9th gen is listed by Apple as being 20 % more powerful than its predecessor. Not twice.
Yeah sorry, twice compared to the 7th gen and 25% more than the 8th gen according to Geekbench single core benchmarks:
Apple devices are easy to upgrade though because of the stable second hand market and the actual transfer process, especially true for the iPad. The bluetooth data transfer between two iPads is one of the nicest user experiences I've seen.
Macs also became easy to reset to defaults since Ventura.
That's why I'd always buy for the current need and only upgrade when necessary.
Apple is rumored to release new IPad in March and the price are also rumored to go up. They seem to have sale right now in many places. Might wanna look into that.
I just started looking at upgrading too. I have iPad Air 4 (2020). It works well, but my latest project struggled on playback in Cubasis with DSP spikes with 18 audio tracks (fortunately the mixdown was ok).
Does Cubasis improve with faster multicore?
And I think AUM is multicore already isn't it?
I have a ridiculous project there with 130 nodes (not tracks), and I want to add more but Dsp is getting high.
So what stat helps me there? Singlecore? Multicore?
Yes.
No.
Bypass nodes that you aren't using. Consider "freezing" tracks to audio file, bypassing the plugins, and looping the audio files with a file player node.
Loopy Pro can make the process of temporarily or permanently committing to audio a little easier, either as a plugin inside AUM or as an alternative host.
I have an iPad 9. gen with an big hdd.
I like it and it fits my needs.
An M1/2 Pro would obviously be preferable if you can afford it, but to be honest I was thinking about getting a current model iPad Air when I give my 2020 iPad Pro to my daughter one day soon. For a company that builds its offering around obvious product differentiation ("good, better, best") the differences between the Air and the Pro are a bit hazy to me right now.
So far I'm impressed with how the 9th gen handles Logic Pro.
Their is a huge difference with the multicore. On my 2017 Pro in single core Zenbeats I could get 4 instances of butter synth. With Cubasis multicore it was 8 instance.
On my new M2 PRO it's 8 for Zenbeats and 20 for Cubasis.
Nothing against Zenbeats, I quite like it as a DAW.
Weakest point of AUM, should have proper freezing of nodes.
Wise words!
