  • As someone who had the M1 iPad, the 6th Gen iPad, and the 9th Gen iPad, I still love my 9th Gen.

How is the battery on the 9th gen iPad ?

I have to say the battery in the M2 is nothing to write about. It about as good a the 7 year old battery in my iPad pro 2017.

Brand new the 2017 pro battery was way superior than the M2 battery.

  • This has all been very useful. I think my strategy will be to wait for the new iPad lineup in March. If affordable and impressive specs then I may bite, otherwise hope to catch the wave of folks (or Apple) selling 5th gen iPad Airs at a discount to replace my 4th gen iPad Air. The 5th gen model is a little bit faster single core, and much faster multi-core, and while Apple doesn't publish Ram stats it apparently doubles the ram to 8gb too.

Honestly, great. I've left it in the car for the past 2 days at 80%, and it's currently at 43%. Granted, it's winter at -3 degrees Celsius, but it's great.

When I had the M1, I'd have to worry about consistently charging it. The display was absolutely fantastic though, but I prefer useability, more than a fancier display.

I thought I'd open up to USB-C. But it still very much has the apple esque trade. I need a headphone jack. Bluetooth doesn't cut it for audio, even with the new Air Pods Pro.

  • I'm happy with the 9th gen that I didn't really want but got for Christmas anyway. Battery life is very good, though I would think anything is good after my tired old Air 2 with about two hours battery life. It seems like the good old days when the Air 2 was new. I especially like that I can stick with my Lightning cables and accessories and it has a headphone jack!

Generally my philosophy is wait until you absolutely have to purchase something new, because there will be better or cheaper options by then than there are now. But, I have a suspicion that my well meaning gift-givers, ended up making a better decision than I would have in this case.

  • The 9th gen is plenty powerful for my needs, including intensive AUM/MiRack sessions with plenty of effects and external ins and outs. That said, I only use my iPad for making music, and I limit the number of installed apps, so there isn't a lot of bloat to slow it down.

The headphone out is really useful for making music on the couch. I mostly use an audio interface, but I feel like I'll really miss the jack when I eventually upgrade.

The fact you can still get these new for a really great price makes the 9th gen a no-brainer (if you don't care about having the highest specs, that is).

Upgrading from one generation to the next isn't worth the money or time, we are talking sub 20% improvement. Better to wait two-three generations if your current unit does what's needed. Or get a used Pro with the bigger screen is what I would have done.

I was given an iPad 9th generation for Christmas. I didn't want it but am now happy to have it.

I especially like that it still uses the lightning connector and still has a headphone jack. I kind of wish it was compatible with Stage Manager, but tbh I bet I would almost never use it. All in all, I think it's a decent choice. I don't feel the need for MX / Pro performance.

3 Cheers for a headphone jack!!!

  • I have a 2017 iPad pro 12.9. Looking to upgrade or go a different direction and get an MPC Keys 61. I use my iPad for a guitar rig but when I start adding some pianos and pads, I have to turn the buffer up to 256 to stop the glitches. I can get an MPC key 61 for $32 a month with guitar center and 10% cash back. or I could wait and see what apple unveils in march with the iPad lineup.

I use my iPad every week at church for guitar and some basic looping when needed but just started wanting to play keys a little more, which is when I started getting some bottle necks with my current one. Great discussions so far in this tread.

I personally don't find the lost of headphones port so difficult to live with. You buy a couple of those usbc to 1/8 dongle, one for each of your headphones and you move on with your life.

Yeah, the headphone Jack can power my Sennheiser HD25 II without problems, leaving even more headroom than the headphone out on the old Air 2.

I was considering the ipad Air 5 but the combination of the battery life (M1 needs more power) with the missing headphone jack kinda cemented the 9th gen as the best current deal.

I hope they add another port to the Pro version, or ship iPads with a H2 chip for low latency wireless (and offer a receiver dongle with h2 for third party headphones).

  • Battery on my 9.gen iPad is good. I don’t use Bluetooth devices and switch on the low battery mode.

Does low power mode end up decreasing performance for audio apps? I would think it would because of CPU throttling, but maybe low power mode doesn't do that?

  • Doesn't seem like low power mode would affect anything with audio apps, unless limiting "background app refresh" applies. I don't see any mention of CPU throttling :
