Not me. Unless it comes with a Sting haircut too.
@wim It does, but it’s an IAP🤣
Good demo, can hear that spring reverb better now. What is your opinion about this reverb?
I think it's too aggressive of a reverb so I will probably leave it on 0%.
Ok, I see.. and overall as the whole unit compared to Outer Space, is it going to add something extra if you already own it?
Funny, I'm about to buy Outer Space 2 later. But I already tried the demo version on desktop and it's great, very versatile. I think the Outer Space one takes. But I hope to test them 1:1 and if I see no one is a true winner (as in, the 501 does have some points over OS2) - I'll post it.
Ok great, thanks!
I have paired Outer Space 2 and this with my Juno 6 and they definitely sound different. The 501 has the same controls as the original unit, which is good. To my taste the intensity and feedback is much to harsh and quite useless when it’s getting into the self-oscillation-territory as it only distorts very digitally. The Outer Space 2 is more controllable feedback-wise. But having a knob from a midi controller mapped to the intensity and limiting the maximum it to 60-65% works very good.
Also the chorus sounds great.
I guess you just have to be careful not to drive it too hot as the distortion or clipping sounds not as good as the Outer Space 2.
After the first jam today I really like it! It’s a great emulation!
@Slush and anyone else interested, I Just made this right after getting Outer Space. First, I tried to find the best settings to sound like the Default preset of the 501, and just ran with it.
Knowing OS2 from testing the desktop demo version of it - it has a lot more knobs that makes it more fun to play with.
Great comparison! Thank you very much. Hard to tell the difference between the 2, but like you mentioned OS2 has deeper control. For now I’ll pass on the Nembrini unit, but nothing much wrong with that and the Chorus is a real bonus.
@DblU Thanks for your feedback!
Reposting from the other thread.:
Bought both nembrini 501 and outer space 2. Also have Re1, K7D and Gs 201. Having had some models of the original Roland space echoes for a long time, IME the nembrini 501 sound very close to the original 501, just keep in mind that the original 201 and 501 are very different sounding, the 501 having companders have way less noise and it’s very stable, that’s the one I had for longer time. The original 201 is dirty in a great fashion specially for guitars, but I always prefer the 501(and the Korg stage echo!,) for synths. Each 201 I’ve played sound differently, the one I owned resembles the sound of Gs201 more. Outer space is great for the large amount of control, but it eats A LOT of cpu cycles, more than 4x nembrini 501 and almost 17x Gs201. I’m attaching a picture from my iPad Air 4 with all the echoes hosted in AUM. I hope audiothing can optimize outer space because for now is useless in my current projects… 🥲
Flo never dissapoints
Thank you @Synthi for your CPU load comparison. Is this table embedded in AUM or is it some general tool?
It's part of AUM; you tap on the DSP icon, then Node Statistics. It really has to be part of the AUv3 host, since it can measure the time taken by the plugins.
Hearing this demo it sounds very much like the guitars in The Chameleons, which I love. Also Echo & the Bunnymen and the like. Sort of cheesy but the tasty, good cheese…
Am I gonna get this just for that?. Probably. Will I remember this in the future and actually use it?. It’d help if the app was called “Cheddar arpeggios”
Edit: just googled it (link) and the Chameleons guitarist used a Roland 301 which also had a built in chorus. From what I’m reading the 301 is like a 201 with added chorus, noisier/dirtier than the 501 which is cleaner. So I guess adding a chorus (FAC chorus, always) + the Outer Space (201) would get you there. But I already bought the Nembrini 501. I guess I dig the “all in one” aspect of it, with the integrated chorus, delay and reverb.
Update on the Sound on Sound for those still wondering. It’s more like a longer 4th echo head that you can switch on and off independently, than a true quasi-looper sound on sound. Still nice to have, but not quite like the original that would let you build little phrases that turn into slowly fading soundscapes. The delay time on it is just too short for that. There is a switch that lets you select whether the echo function has a single repeat or many, and this also applies to the sound on sound head. On balance, it’s still a nice addition that adds yet more flexibility.
Outer space has 16x oversampling on by default if I recall correctly, that’s a lot of extra CPU use, but it can be turned down. And sometimes should. E.g. in Loopy Pro on 48kHz sample rate 16x oversampling is redundant, as it just doubles the rate/speed, so 8x is max. in terms of quality and anti-aliasing.
Chiming in to say this is a really good thread. My reference plugin on the desktop is GSI GS-201mk2 which veers into 501 territory. Thanks for all the insight and the Andy Summers. From what I understand via the below interview, he used flanger > echo > compressor. His flanger is famously touted to be the electric mistress. Makes sense the echo was a roland.
I didn't see a glimpse of the pedal board, but I'm sure a picture or two is out there. They do catch a demo of the Roland GR-500 (also featured in Hot Chocolate's Every 1's a Winner).

As always useful demo , thank you. Both apps sound great to my ears.
Beautiful, really shows the potential of this delay, love the relaxing guitar noodling.

Agree, that SOS on nembrini is nothing like the real thing, too short at 3000ms or 1 bar… in the original it takes all the tape length for recording, that’s more like 20-25 seconds, I used the SOS quasi loops lot of times in the past and wanted this effect again, maybe is time to contact developer
@Synthi are you sure about that, or perhaps mixing Re-501 with Re-301? I don’t have any hardware experience, but from reading I got the impression that 301 uses all the tape length for SoS but the 501 only uses a short length after head 3 (as I mentioned earlier in this thread). For instance this comparison: http://www.interruptor.ch/php5/dubboard/viewtopic.php?t=1227
Interesting, looking at the schematic the sos head is at the right of the 3rd echo head…. I’m pretty sure the long sos loops I used the 501… but maybe it was the 301? Or the korg? I had lot of tape echos in the past and may e my mind is playing tricks on me!
Anyway, I’d love to have a way longer SOS in NE501
I was lucky enough to briefly own a 501 years ago…the SOS was shorter than the 301 model, but still longer than on this plugin.
I wrote Nembrini to request they extend the SOS length and they said they are working on it!
We are so lucky to have both this and Outer Space on iOS! They are both great in their own ways!
That’s good and interesting news!
This really does sound good! The chorus & echo combo is so bright, slappy, springy. I’m not even a fan of chorus generally but I love it. And definitely instant Police sound. Anyone been trying to dial this sound in with combos of other apps? Would be curious to hear what you have used and how close you have got. I’ve just started experimenting with getting the chorus sound from something else I have, but so far can’t quite get it.
You said it!
I wrote nembrini yesterday about the SOS lenght too, and Just received the reply that they updated the plugin to 30 seconds!!!
The update is already out for the desktop so I think iOS update will follow
