The new Ableton mode sounds awesome. Does anybody know if it works with windows, too?
Prism is the only app I’ve ever got a refund for. For me not intuitive at all. Figured if I ever did manage to learn it I’d forget how to use it within a few weeks. I’m sure it’s improved since the early releases.
Oh! I’m so glad to see the option for multi-MIDI out ports added.
I just gave the Ableton Live integration a spin. I don't really use Live other than Live Lite occasionally out of curiosity, but if I did, I'd totally use Prism on the iPad for it. It's great.
[edit] oh heck yeah. Been playing with it all night and it's really great. 👍🏼
With you there. One thing that took me a while to discover is that you now set the global key in the FX mode, rather than SONG mode as it was previously (and still is in the work-in-progress manual).
Not liking the liquid glass treatment on the track selectors, etc. I'm not a fan of liquid glass, but that's beside the point. The contrast is too low. It's hard to tell what's highlighted / flashing. Those are important bits of info obscured between a bit of over-design in my opinion.
The app seems to be rock solid now. I used to get crashes when doing things like modifying drum kit mappings. It's been 100% solid in the several hours I've used it since the update.
Hey @wim .. have you tried changing any of the appearance settings under Global Settings > Device .. not a whole lot there but maybe changing to “bright” might help the contrast? I use dark mode with bright and it’s seems to be the best for my eyes ..
Thanks. Yeah, I have the same settings. I've tried them all, and none improve on that combination.
I mean ... this is just dumb. The only easily discernible color difference is for track three, which is selected, and that really only if you look hard, thus slowing perception down. Look at the lack of difference between track 5 which has content and track 6, which doesn't. Its easier to see blown up like this, but on a full screen from 20 inches away or so, forget it.
I don't want to make a huge big deal about this since the rest of the app is great. But it always mystifies me why so many developers do stuff like this. It's like they abhor the idea of contrast.
Haha, start a contrast-abhorring-devs wall of shame thread. I feel you though, lack of contrast in much ui design is something that really gets my goat
As it happens, the rest of the GUI isn't that way at all - just those top buttons, which don't even show up in more compact window sizes.
I will say that Prism has grown on me a lot the past few days. It'll never be my main sequencer, but it'll be great to have on hand when I feel like changing things up for awhile.
Yeah man .. it’s one of those things I had gotten used to that then became a now-that-you-mention-it thing .. just put a request in for higher contrast for those buttons on discord ..
I’m waiting on Leo @sfm to do a new tutorial video on this, explaining some of these new features.
I don’t know how he does it, but I always learn something (or many things) from his videos.
Apesoft
I’m interested in Prism but then I see the price and remember it’s a non starter for me. I know the AppStore can continue to list in app purchases even if they’re no longer available in the app: are the iaps shown still relevant or does the purchase price now include everything?
I’m with ya man .. there’s something about how Leo @sfm presents even the most complex instruments and their capabilities that just clicks for me.. would love to see some new Prism videos from him, as well.
I’m curious, what new features do you want to see coverage on the most? I’m ready to dust off my laptop and start plugging into Ableton again to see how well the two play together.
Also, I know it’s not a new feature but in my own Prism playing I’ve been doing a deep dive into Chord Blocks, lately .. I don’t think I’ve realized til now just how powerful they really are ..
Those look correct to me.
I'm dying for an undo button. 😐
That might be the only thing keeping this from being #2 sequencer for me. I don't think I'd use it for serious work without that. Very fun to play with though!
Ah well, thanks for confirming @wim, cheers.
@wim —What is your main sequencer these days?
In general - Drambo. I've never found anything that suits me better and is as complete. There are others such as Octachron, Beat Scholar, and Patterning 3 that offer different approaches that I like for drums, but for just laying stuff down out of my own head for all kinds of tracks, Drambo fits the bill.
tbh though, I enjoy myself a lot more if I just lay down midi or audio loops from live takes in Loopy Pro, and don't get all caught up in sequencing. I kind of use Drambo that way too, though the temptation to tweak parts all day is always staring me in the face.
Well, honestly I haven’t tried any of the newer features since the last video Leo did on it, and that was a while back. By the looks of it, tons of things have been added.
When I have some time, I’m going to try reading the manual. I hear it’s written well, so maybe that will shed some light on some of these mysterious features; like the various gestures and such.
Have you posted any music you made with Drambo and other apps?
Nope. Not my thing. I just noodle around for my own entertainment. I don't even share with my wife or kids.
That's a shame. I'd like to hear some of your works someday when you're brave enough to share them.
So, for an Ambient producer like me who likes to faff about in AUM, would you say Prism MIDI Sequencer is a goodie?
Unlikely. It's not out of fear, it's this weird thing where I just want it to be my own thing. I like the freedom to create without thinking about how what I do might sound to others or even feeling like I should "take it to the next level".
It's more like picking up a guitar for a noodle on the porch than trying to finish songs.
I couldn't say. I rarely do ambient, and when I do it's rarely sequenced other than with Waymaker. Sometimes a generative modular patch. More often its just freeform playing, or generative modular patches. Goes in the trash can right away. For me it's the process, not the product.
I don't think of looping clip thingies as conducive to ambient. But you seem to be able to make ambient with things like Koala that I wouldn't imagine would be good for it. So you could probably manage it.
Now I get your mindset a bit better. I love to noodle about, but 99.9% of the time it becomes a full production. Only a handful times have I made something I considered a bit shit that I binned straight away. 😂
After viewing the price for Prism and its IAPs, I think I will hold off until next month and instead go for Piano Motifs. Sometimes I like to play something in and loop that. Other times I want to play in a longer passage of sparse notes. Sometimes I long-press a note after designing a drone, and sometimes I just want a sequencer to do the "heavy lifting" for me.
Like you, I also enjoy the process very much. I'm always looking for new "toys" to play with. I just purchased Musyc2 for instance. (After a quick play with Musyc2, I highly recommend it for noodling!)
Koala Sampler is the ultimate bread-and-butter app for Frippertronics looping on iOS imho. Gauss is great too, and I may revisit that once I tire of Koala. I should use Fluss and record a performance in that into one of Koala's pads as a drone.
Honestly, if you’re making ambient music, I feel like you can make it with anything .. I sometimes lean towards ambient and Prism doesn’t hinder that in any way—it just offers a different workflow—another tool for the box..
As far as IAPs go—yes they’re super useful, but if they’re not needed then there’s still plenty to do with Prism at the base price.. One of the IAPs is for LaunchKey mini mk4 integration—very specific and useless if you don’t own the hardware , so that’s 7 bucks saved right there.
I will say, though, that the IAPs add way more value to Prism than what you pay for them .. but ymmv.
Convoluted obfuscation. You must have to be a Mage to understand it. Sorry, I’m feeling grumpy today.
It helps if you have a nifty wizard hat like in the videos. 👍🏼
