What’s your favourite Gadget IAP and why?

I’ve just bought Stockholm and might stretch to one more gadget before the sale ends. I have Reason 6 so know what to expect with Stockholm, what’s cool and fun about that Korg IAP you love? Thanks

  • Bilbao.

Very versatile even with its short sample playback limits.
I can get beats, synth sounds and samples into it from outside sources. It can be a drum machine with imported drum samples. Or a sample player of synth stabs, fx and vocals.

I've taken full beats out of other apps, broken them down into shorter sections evenly and imported them across a number of Bilbao's trigger pads to rebuild the original beat or to mix the beat up in different orders.

I've made samples of individual guitar notes, including bends and hammer-ons in certain keys played from the sampletank guitar library and imported them across a number of Bilbao's trigger pads to play good-sounding guitar lines in Gadget tracks.

Another example was getting an acid bassline loop into Gadget from Troublemaker. I recorded a couple of bars of Troublemaker precisely timed in AUM first. Then divided them up shorter and evenly in Audioshare. Then imported them across a number of Bilbao's trigger pads for rebuilding the original loop or mixing the order for variations.

Bilbao has been the most important gadget for me since day one. With some cunning and a little effort, you can get all manner of sounds and loops into Gadget from outside the box. This is great for me as I love to work in the Gadget environment more than any other DAW.

  • OdysseI (Lexington). Imo, it is the best iOS virtual analog. Like the other hybrid standalone+Gadget it isn’t AUv3, yet.

I am curious what people think about Madrid.

  • @scrape : Are the individual Krog gadgets on sale ? They seem to be goi g for $9.95 each. Is the regular price $19.95? I’m having trouble finding info. Even when I Google it I’m seeing a sale only for the entire app .

  • I think they’re on sale. I already have all the IAA synths available for the phone from previous sales, all are really good. I’m after one more of the gadgets you can buy within the app and they‘re currently between 6.99 and 9.99 in the UK.

  • Thanks for answers so far. I had Bilbao at the end of my list but I can see now it’s crucial for getting samples in. Lexington is indeed very nice.

Yep, bilbao is more or less the only (simplistic) sampler that lets you use more than two samples at the same time. Stockholm goes beyond that but it needs desktop software to create sample sets.

The new Sydney gadget provides 6 sample slots.
But indeed Bilbao is also one of my most used from the IAPs. Sometimes use Abu Dhabi - if I need to chop a sample and need control over attack (Sydney provides attack too). Vancouver for chromatic samples.
And of course all the gadgets from the standalones: iM1, Wavestation, Module, etc.

  • I’ve been messing with the Sydney audio unit in Nodes - it works great for repitching and time stretching samples. I haven’t purchased it yet but oddly the Au works in AUM and Nodes.

  • My personal favorites are Otorii and Ebina. I love classic video game 8/16-bit sounds but those 2 kinda take it to a whole other level and can be great for experimental and industrial stuff.

Also the samplers. Abu Dhabi and Sydney are excellent.

If we’re talking apps that exist outside of Gadget though, I’d have to give that to iWavestation. It’s in contention for my favorite iOS synth period.

Funny you should ask. I was just mulling that over last night. It has a wide variety of bass sounds and it's easy to find something close to what I'm hearing in my head a track needs. That said, there's something thin that's less than satisfying to me. I decided to replace Madrid with a similar style PureSynthPlatinum / Bassalicious 2 patch in something I was working on last night. The difference was like night and day.

So, for me, it's good for composition because it's quick, but ultimately not super satisfying without a lot of tweaking.

Strictly speaking of only the AUv3 ones, I like them all. It's been fun revisiting such very different ones as Kiev as AUv3's.

But ... I have to say, Tokyo is the most satisfying of the new AUv3's for reasons I really can't put a finger on. It just makes me happy. 😎

  • Bilbao,Glasgow,Marseille,Kiev,Stockholm,Sydney,Lisbon are my favourites and most used.

  • i-MS 20 and M1 because they are classics

Dude! I’m with you on Tokyo .. I can’t say what it is exactly, either, but when I saw the update that’s the first gadget I thought about .. it’s like the perfect seasoning but more than just that .

  • Ms20 for running audio from
    Other gadgets thru.

Darwin/M1 just because i can alter the sounds alot and its jampacked

  • Hard to choose just one IAP mate. They're all amazing to me. 😅

  • Very hard to choose, there really isn’t a bad one in the bunch, Bilbao is definitely great. I definitely love that one. I think maybe Abu Dhabi. Sure it’s a slicer but the way the arp feature is implemented gives you some really cool results when holding down multiple notes. Along with the sliders for repeats/pitch/etc… great slicer. I like Gladstone a lot too. Also all the ones that come with Module.

What’s peoples take on Kamata? Don’t have that one but interested.

Glad I’m not alone here. As soon as I heard the update my eyes got wide and my brain thought “Tokyo in AUM!!” 🥳

  • I’m currently swithering between Gladstone and one of the chip tune ones. I’m very likely to come back for some others during the next sale though. If I end up using Gadget more than I have been, which is looking likely with recent developments, then Bilbao’s going to be pretty necessary too.

  • @wim Regarding the 'thin sound', I got used to adding EQs on basically every track in Gadget.

  • Kids, I'm really on the fence in regards to Gadget (not owned yet). Milpitas (iWavestation) is the synth that is making me keen to dive in however paying $30(aud) for Gadget and then $15 for the IAP is a tad hefty. A question though - when I look at the Gadget listing in the app store, Milpitas is not listed as an IAP? Have I got it wrong and it's actually included in the base Gadget?

No, it is not in the base Gadget app.

    You have to buy it.

  • Not counting the synth apps that you can also use in Gadget, I’ve gotten a lot of use from Madrid bass and Gladstone drums.

  • It's hard to pick one. So happy with the update. Still a lot of things I'd like done but, heading in the right direction.
I really like Rosario, though I can't recall if it was an IAP or not.

    I use Gladstone a lot.
I have to say, there isn't any Gadget's I don't like. Big fan of them, and Module Pro, fwiw.

No it’s not included but you should only have to pay once. If you buy the standalone all you have to do is restore purchase. Unless you’re talking about buying 2 different apps?

Don’t I have to buy Gagdet then buy the wave station IAP?

Nope, owning iWavestation app will unlock the associated Milpitas gadget automatically. No extra purchase required.

Ok so it’s standalone if one doesn’t own Gadget. Does that standalone purchase still offer auv3?

No, but in the footnotes for the Gadget v3 release, Korg allude to the standalone apps becoming auv3 in the future.

If you buy iWaveStation you can use it as a stand alone app without owning Gadget.

If you buy iWaveStation you can also use it as an InterAppAudio app in things like AUM.

At the moment it is not AUv3.

Korg has said that some other apps will become AUv3, but we don't know what ones or when.
