Teenage Engineering and the Rabbit OS R1

  • Oops… it’s Perplexity AI that is partnering. Here’s the terms of the partnership as explained by Perplexity which also covers their unique added value… they provide answers based on current search data for one:

Rabbit, the company behind the AI gadget Rabbit R1, has announced a partnership with Perplexity, a company known for its conversational AI-powered answer engine.

The Rabbit R1, a $199 device designed by Teenage Engineering, is a standalone AI gadget that has already sold through 50,000 preorders.

The device features a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a scroll wheel, two mics, a speaker, a rotational camera, and a "Push-to-Talk" button.

The collaboration between Rabbit and Perplexity will allow the Rabbit R1 to receive live, up-to-date information from Perplexity's AI 'answer engine'.

This means that unlike other large language models (LLMs) that can only reference data up to a certain date in the past, the R1 will have a built-in search engine with live, up-to-date answers.

Perplexity will be providing these up-to-date search results via Rabbit's device without the need for any subscription
    2
    .
In addition to this, the first 100,000 Rabbit R1 purchases will come with one year of Perplexity Pro, a plan that includes access to newer LLMs like GPT-4 and normally costs $20 per month
    1
. This advanced service adds file upload support, a daily quota of over 300 complex queries, and the ability to switch to other AI models, though these features don't necessarily apply to the R1's use case
    2
    .
The partnership between Rabbit and Perplexity is seen as a fusion of cutting-edge technologies, enhancing the R1's capabilities and showcasing the potential of AI
    4
. The integration of Perplexity's advanced APIs into Rabbit R1 aims to enhance the speed and accuracy of the device's responses, and allows Perplexity to gather valuable real-world data through live interactions with users, enabling continuous refinement and improvement of its language models

I was also considering this (if it's a scam). They have a product, a promotional movie but not a single illustration of it's use. 5 batches already sold out. How much is one batch? Even if it's only 1000 units then it's 200K USD per batch.

The introduction video has 5M views, so I guess they have sold quite a lot already ;)

Perplexity AI is for sure partnered with them, and Perplexity is an established AI company with some massive corporate backers. 100% not a scam.

WITAF? :D I think someone has started to believe his own hype. From what I see they are more popular than ever.

  • @Tarekith thanks for sharing.

@Ailerom well said. As much as AI can help people to interact with apps and other internet services, it would rather not help people to interact with each other remotely. For this smartphone would ba always a better choice.

Exactly! And then he goes on about them not being intuitive. Really dude?

At least their promotion strategy seems to work out for some - not all people question what they hear and see 😊

In this case I think some of it may be that. But, honestly they made it cheap enough for people to buy one to see what it’s all about. I’ll give them that…it’s relatively inexpensive.

My question to the man who you quoted..."can I produce an entire music track on this device? No? Guess I'm not tired of my iPhone just yet. Bye." 😆

Am I the only one who honestly doesn't want something like this to make accomplishing such mundane things any easier? Honestly, this has NO appeal to me at all. I'm already feeling like my sense of self worth, challenge, and accomplishment are so diluted by how easy it is to find out and do just about anything today.

Sure it's convenient to ask my phone to find the name of that pasty dip made from garbanzo beans that couldn't remember just now. But, uh, I wish I had taken the effort to remember it on my own.

No thanks! My brain is atrophying too fast as it is. That thing is the last thing I want in my life.

Dude, if your not part of the move toward physical and mental decline then you're part of the problem. And that means, the AI is gonna git ya.

I am just curious what are the security implications. If you tell Rabbit to play music on Spotify, it has to operate your mobile device, simulate your taps and in fact has granted control over your device. It's basically a remote control program taking over your phone / tablet. So it can do EVERYTHING.
This amount of trust I would only give to my wife.

    Great point!
If you don't have a trustworthy wife, let a rabb1t fill the gap.

Automation frees time for other more interesting things imo. There's only so much information a brain can store, and why not store more of the stuff that matters to you and less of the noise.

It’s not about storing things. It’s about preserving going through at least a little bit of mental effort to do things. Keeping my mind sharp matters to me far more than talking to some cute little device to get answers “in under 500 milliseconds”.

I don’t expect everyone to get that or anyone to agree.

I get what you mean because I had discussions like that with family members who are quite stubborn about this as well, and won't even use password manangers for example.

Thing is your brain can't memorize an infinite amount of procedures and ways to do things. Wouldn't it be better if your brain is filled with procedures you really care about?

I don't think I've communicated my thoughts very well. I'm not anti-technology. I'm anti - laziness. WTF? I can already order a friggin' Uber, look up whatever I want to know, entertain myself, make music, control my robotic vacuum cleaner in two seconds from my phone ... I don't need some cute little gadget to pull all that together for me "in under 500ms". 😂

I don't begrudge anyone else by being attracted by it. I just personally think it's a ridiculous little gadget. I feel the same about iWatch. That's just me.

I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade. You really don't need to try to change my mind. I'll be just fine and I've said all I had to say. Y'all can go back to enjoying talking about it.

  • yeah…it’s not a necessity…but it would be helpful…basically an assistant…

    how busy are you? 😅

All those things add up though. 500ms here, 500ms there, lol. Maybe you still have it too good where you live, German bureaucracy made me an automation fanatic.

  • Whatever you do, don't get lazy

Scam after all... But some of us suspected it of being one

  • I think they sell these at the lions den 😎

What's the tldr? Scam in what way? Just not living up to the promises or something else? Cheers

  • There's nothing in that product that couldn't be replaced by an app on an iPhone.

It's using Chat GPT and a web automation platform under the hood, so basically like predicted in my first post, but unfortunately not well executed. The founder has a history of underdelivering with his projects as it turns out. It's safe to call it a scam.
