I've had a couple of apps I paid for go subscription, with a free version + features behind the pay wall. But what they did, and what I think they should have done with MD, is let everybody keep the features they paid for via IAP permanently in the new app. So there would basically be three tiers; Free, Free + the features previously paid for and Subscription which gets all the features.
That way you get to keep the app, don't have to pay a sub, but the app gets maintained. And if it improves enough, you can always subscribe if you like. But you don't lose what you paid for.
One example of this I can think of was Castro, a podcast app. This is how they did it:
https://castro.fm/blog/release-week-castro-3-and-castro-plus
A snippet from that blog post:
They basically made most of the features from the previous version available for free and added a load more features to the "Plus" version via subscription.
It's the first time that I see that app and....OMG it's ugly to the infinity.
I downloaded the new version thinking it was just an update... @#$%&*^##!!!
I have since bought TouchOSC MKII. This is so much easier for me to use! I've already made several templates... don't think I even finished one on Midi Designer Pro.
You don't have an unlimited length of time to request a refund from Apple. I suppose you could submit a complaint to Apple if you felt you were cheated or treated unfairly.
Everyone absolutely must bury that POS in 1 star reviews on App Store. It’s honestly the only leverage we have.
Just request a refund from apple and you’ll get your money back. Apple originally represented this as a purchase on their app store, not as a rental or subscription and they profited from that representation.
They and the company they represent can’t walk back that sale and now call it a rental or subscription as contract law regarding the provision of goods or services doesn’t work that way.
Apple is fighting really hard to keep their extremely profitable app store out of the hands of regulators and if they permit behavior like this they will lose.
They will also open themselves up to endless court battles as customers seek recompense for all of their purchases as well as damages based on showing Apple intentionally misrepresented and profited offering claims of ownership at the time of sale rather than declaring clearly possible future forced conversion to a rental or subscription model.
What would be the best route to do that? I think I actually will try to get my money back
And this is why I never used it. Not visually pleasing at all. I don't think I even installed it on the iPad I got 2 years ago, probably bought it like 5 years before that.
At least there is surface builder now, more than covers my needs.
It’s always been a turd. Dan is probably going to use the subscription revenue to finally hire a designer that’s not blind.
There were a few pretty niche things it could do, but yea, now there’s much better AU alternatives.
Just go to the product page on the App Store, scroll down to “report a problem”, choose “I’d like to” then choose “request a refund”. They say it takes 24-48 hours to get a response.
For reason state that they forcefully and with no notification converted your purchased product to a rental/subscription model. As you do not agree to nor consent to these new terms and/or conditions you are requesting a full refund for the purchase price as well as any included iap/in-app-purchases.
None of that is true. The developer set the terms and price for their app, not Apple. Apple created the tools for programmers, the platform for hosting apps and is the distributor of apps and provider of the marketplace. If a developer changes how their app is sold or supported, that is their decision, not Apple's decision.
I'm ok with it but then I never really use it now. I can see your point, Wim. Afaict, it's the same app but with a subscription model bolted on. I guess that we could ask if the dev will allow owners to revert to a pre-subscription version.
Apple and their app store are exclusive representatives for this product and contract law requires that they honor their representation of product merchantability.
Sounds like they may be walking back the subscription requirement for owners of the previous version. I saw this just now in their forum:
Apple does not prevent developers from changing their business model. That's up to the developers to communicate to their users. If a developer engages in fraud, that's a different matter. Did this dev engage in fraud? I'm not sure they did. Did they guarantee users unlimited use of their software forever without any changes to their terms of use? I seriously doubt they did.
It's unrealistic to expect that anyone would litigate over something this ambiguous, of this little value, and of this small a customer base. So argumentation over the legal merits of such a case and who would be the target of such litigation (both probably) in such a fantasy case is just that ... pure fantasy.
I also wrote them and got the same positive update. Yup, as someone called it, they are walking it back. I suggested they look into the Loopy model as that’s pretty much fair for everyone
Their response:
We have heard your feedback.
We will be updating our subscription policy to honor commitments to prior purchases.
However, Dan is off the grid this weekend and enjoying some time off from the big push for Pro X.
Standby for an update next week. No subscriptions should be charged for prior users before that point as prior users originally had a free year.
I would imagine they have done damage to their brand by this move, so hopefully the response is a learning experience for them.
I dunno. I respect people that listen and are willing to change direction almost as much as people that never make a bad decision.
Standing by to happily update the thread title and OP if and when they follow through.
Yeah I got the email too, it looks like they listened.
I guess I won’t be upgrading then. I’ve also cancelled my Logic subscription.
Good to hear the update
Customer here. My 1-star rating text is ready. Waiting a few days for a resolve. If we allow only one such steal they all will do it.
Literally not
You have a couple of fun years ahead... We'll all own nothing and be happy. That seems to be the way things are going.
That is the way, but only if we do nothing, but what they don’t state is that rule doesn’t apply to themselves.
Thank you all for the honest conversation and for using MIDI Designer Pro.
We heard your disappointment, and we want to correct course.
Today, we are making some changes (coming soon in our next version of MIDI Designer Pro X). Everyone who purchased MIDI Designer Pro 2 prior to our switch to subscription on January 25, 2024 will have lifetime access to all existing features before the 10.0 update.

That’s great news. Thank you for listening!
That’ll work for me
@wim: i think it is time to update the thread title
Updated to reflect pending reversal. Will further revise when the changes are released.
