I'm too paranoid to upgrade to iOS 8 or to upgrade any of my apps. It's driving me crazy!

The title says it all. I am seeing tons of app updates, and i'm too afraid to update any of them, and I feel like I'm missing out on bug fixes and new features.

It's really bumming me out. I thought it would be healthier to express my feelings here rather than attempt to numb the pain with drugs and alcohol.

  • Opposite here - no interest in ios8 at all - things are working great on 7 - still have apps I want that are on ios7. I have everything I need and more - lots to explore and play with. I only updated to ios7 about 6-7 months ago. I'll probably stay with this until early-mid 2015.

  • Not feeling the pain but my phone and iPad are basically on lock down. The little red circle with "87" in it is definitely menacing but I'm happy to have the option to ignore it for a bit.

I'm actually looking forward to the upgrade but I'm not in a rush.

  • Haven't updated anything either, and everything's working nice and smooth. It's probably a little easier for me to resist as I'm still working with an iPad 2.

  • iOS 8 is the worst update in my experience. Lots of bugs and nothing improved for music making. I strongly recommend you don't update to iOS 8 until much later. So just forget it for now.

  • @johnfromberkley It's funny, same here. It's hard not to be up to date ;)

Just turn it off in the notification preferences and it will stop haunting you!

iOS 8 burned down my house and flooded my neighborhood. Don't install it!

I'm loving ios7 no paranoia here at all.

Hide yo kids, hide yo wife!

Seriously though: take it easy, just wait a few months and then make an educated decision if you want to update or not.

  • Few months????!!!!! :O

  • In a few months IOS 9 is coming out! ;)

  • I don't feel the urge to update to iOS8, not until most apps have been reported to work flawlessly with iOS8.

That said, you shouldn't be afraid of updating your apps. Whenever I fear ruining an app because of an update I'll make a backup of the app with DiskAid (now iMazing) to my computer.

It works wonders. It extracts an installable .ipa of the actual app you have installed on your device, together with its data and settings, something iTunes just doesn't offer. And it doesn't require you to jailbreak your device.

  • I have an iP5 and an iPad Air. The iPad is the most critical music making making device for me. What I end up doing is updating my phone first. I always wait until the dust settles to a certain level of stability.

I decided to update my phone to 8.0.2 yesterday, wired, not OTA. The core set of apps I use on the iPad are almost all on the phone as well. So far so good. I've been opening up and testing apps and haven't encountered failures or weirdness yet in app and inter-app functionality. I did notice a bit of app launch weirdness: A momentary black screen when launching a couple of apps. Performance is close to iOS 7, a pleasant surprise.

I'm still going to wait a bit before updating my iPad to 8.

But if you are paranoid you should definitely update now ^^

  • The new IPad Air will come with ios8 so hopefully everything will be good by then. Also I was paranoid to upgrade Animoog (I'm on IPad Air 7.12) but I accidentally hit the update button and
I'm happy to say that it's working fine with Audiobus, Cubasis etc.No lost presets or anything.

  • I made the plunge and updated and what I have noticed that the Apps that are not working with AudioBus work with IAA

No paranoia or urge to here: I don't update to ios 8 and I update all my apps. I don't update to 8 because I don't have enough space for it to install and because of all the bad reports. I just update my apps and there is no problem. I have the latest ios 7. Why update to 8 if it gives trouble?

  • @janogarcia thanks for the tip, that app sounds iMazing! Pretty darn handy for a 16gb iPad

  • Simple, dont update yet, the only thing your missing out on is a pain in the arse the size of Jupiter

  • Just now got the notice for iOS 8 for my iPhone 5, and I am ignoring it even as I type!

  • Not updating here. I'm gonna get the iPad Air 2 or whatever it's called when it comes out, so no rush. Hopefully enough bugs will be ironed out by then. I will wait for 8.1 for the iPod unless something ugly happens.

  • Updated and I'm still alive....phew....some apps from lazy developers don't work....that's life I guess....

  • Yeah, not sure why you'd feel compelled to upgrade unless there was a specific feature you're looking for. I upgraded but I knew what I was getting into. It's depressing how many apps just don't work right anymore. Samplr being at the top of that list for me.

  • I'd at least like to run the most recent iOS 7 versions of all the apps, but even that is in question, right?

  • The thing is that the only thing added to many of the latest versions is iOS 8 compatibility/fixes, so there's nothing to be gained. The only exceptions I've seen for the apps I have is Alchemy and JamUp Pro. I'm sure you have apps I don't have, so I recommend looking at "What's New" and seeing what's there. If an update interests you, do a little research or ask to see if anyone is having problems with it.

  • The most significant yet under mentioned is iCloud drive which is now supported in mitosynth. It still needs some development but it's way cheaper than drop box for managing large sample library's in the cloud.

If you're happy with how your apps work, turn off automatic updates. Only update if you feel the need to. That actually should be the default setting for any musician.

Yes. A few months. That's how long some developers will take to update their apps. It's actual work and some developers aren't working on their audio apps full time. An update to an app which includes significant changes that iOS 8 requires will take weeks to be ready - if the developers know what they're doing and it's their main gig. Development is one part, then there's testing, then there's the review time by App Review.

    So yes:

Wait a few months before you update. Months. Give people time to do decent work. You won't regret it.

5.0.1? You may want to update that just for security fixes and such! My 4s is still on 7 but will get 8 eventually. My daughters 4s is on 8 and running fine.
