ios backup icloud

hey guys,
this is a general icloud question.
i have 12tb of icloud space, did a complete backup for my phone and ipad.
for instance, i have 30gb in use in my iphone, the icloud backup of this device is only 8gb big.
but i want all my samples, documents etc in icloud too.
do i have to copy the one by one?

thanks

  • Hi. The backup only includes the data. Not the apps or the system. If you ever need to restore the backup, the apps will be installed from the App Store. Does that seem to explain the numbers?

  • not really. i have put all my samples in the cubasis audio folder.
that's the only important folder i wanna have backuped in my icloud space.
    how to do that?

Maybe you can use the Files app to copy the files to a folder on iCloud drive. iCloud Drive should be visible in the sidebar of the Files app. You might need to zip the files first. Note that this will not be automatic, and iCloud Drive will probably buffer the files on your device.

A regular iCloud backup will include that data, but you can only recover it by erasing your device and restoring the backup. So an iCloud backup is really only useful as a last resort means of recovery.

  • Any Apple Music or movies on your phone won’t be backed up, I believe photos don’t count towards the iCloud storage limit as well.

    They do.

This is how I would do it too. I’d rather keep a dedicated iCloud folder than have the files as part of a device backup.

  • so it's impossible to keep my content synced automatically.
then icloud+ doesn't make any sense.
    bye bye subscription

  • all i wanted is my cubasis folder being synced all the time.
    iphone/ipad/mac/icloud.

can't believe you have to do that manually.

What do you mean by impossible to keep your content synched? Synched with what?

  • i wanna have the same content on all devices.
when i do a change on that folder, it's changed for all devices and in icloud.

contacts is working too, when i make a new contact in my iphone, i have it in all devices and i icloud.

  • i think that feature is a big point to decide using apple at all.

i just want it to work, im not a it freak or windows specialist or whatever

I stand corrected. Apple actually DOES offer 12TB of online storage ($59.99/mo.). Wow. That is a massive amount of storage. I’ve never even generated 2TB of data in my entire digital life.

For this to be automatic, you would need Cubasis to allow its data to be stored on iCloud Drive. Then it would be the same everywhere. Without direct support from Cubasis, this is likely not possible.

  • What I do with Logic Pro for iPad is to work on an external drive that I can move around as I wish
Very unfortunately Cubasis will not let you chose the folder and drive to work from.

that's the point. it would be lso super easy if ios would allow alias folders.
then i could just have my samples in icloud drive.

With the Apple Shortcuts app you can set up specific folders to back up to iCloud or elsewhere. Shortcuts can be set to run at scheduled times. But not wanting to be a it freak or windows specialist or whatever, maybe that’s not a good solution for you.

( I am an IT freak and windows specialist or whatever, so wouldn’t mind helping if you did want to go that route though. )

Unfortunately this isn't as clean as I'd like, and setup on your device will have some learning curve. It's worth it though to get familiarity with the Shortcuts app. Here's a quick working shortcut on my device:

[edit] If I remember correctly, you may have to enable some permissions in iOS settings > Shortcuts for things like this to work. I forget what they are though.

It's pretty self-explanatory. It reads in the contents of the Cubasis folder, filters out the Trash folder from there results (optional), and then saves all of it to a folder "Backup" I created on iCloud in a SubPath "/Cubasis LE 3". Overwrite if File Exists has to be on or each run will make new folders with "-1", "-2" etc. appended.

    To create this

    1. Decide where you want to back up and create a folder for that. Note, if you're backing up to iCloud, the whole tree will sync to iCloud each time, so beware of data restrictions or costs. You don't have to back up to iCloud if you know how to do things like back up to a USB drive or to a network share. Generally you can back up to anywhere the Files app can reach
    2. Open the Shortcuts app and hit the + button to start a new Shortcut.
    3. The easiest way to find modules actions is usually just to use the search box.
      • Typing Get Con was enough for me to quickly find "Documents > Get Contents of Folder". Tapping on that adds it to the shortcut.
      • I elected not to save the "Trash" folder so I added a "Filter Files" action.
      • The next action is trickier - you would think it would be called "Copy files" or something, but it's called "Documents > Save File". Searching for "copy" does find it though.
    4. Note that when you added these actions they automatically got input from the previous action. Sometimes you have to manually set that, but we're lucky here, so I won't go into that.
    5. Now for particular options:
      • Tap the grayed out "Folder" word to browse to the Cubasis folder on your device. Then tap Open.
      • Tap Add Filter, then change File Size to Name, and type Trash for the name.
      • Next to Save, tap the ">" icon next to Contents of Folder.
        • Turn off "Ask Where to Save"
        • Tap above now after "To" and browse to your backup folder. In my example I browsed to "iCloud > Backups" which I created earlier.
        • Set the sub-path if any under. In my example, I typed /Cubasis LE 3, which I had made under Backups earlier
    6. Shortcuts will create a name for the shortcut, but this is a good time to rename it by typing the name at the top left and selecting Rename from the menu. You can also add an icon to the Home Screen to run this shortcut if you like.

    That should be it.

  • To make this run on a scheduled basis, tap Automation in the left menu bar of the Shortcuts app, then pick New Automation if it's your first automation. Then tap Time of Day and set the appropriate options. Pay attention the the Run after Confirmation and Run Immediately (without confirmation) options. Lastly pick the shortcut you created.

  • Wow! Thanks a lot @wim .. I appreciate it!

I don't know. It may be that iOS copies all the files or that it only copies changed and new ones. I don't know of any way to determine which it does.

  • Shortcut worked as advertised but I do have a question for ya @wim ..

What happens if, after running the shortcut, I delete the files from the original location and run the shortcut again?
… Will the backup folder be empty then, mirroring whatever the contents are (or aren’t) of the original location at the time of running the shortcut?

It would be empty with the shortcut set up in the way that it is.

got it, you can choose the behaviour

  • shortcuts are not necessary at all to have cubasis incl my samples folder backup'd
its done automatically when you make a standard icloud backup of your device, just enable cubasis to be synced.
sorry, the whole tread was not necessary at all.
at least i learned about shortcuts.

keep in mind that to restore from an icloud backup, you have restore the whole device.
