Expression pedal as MIDI device?

  • Hi. I have the Chocolate, and it works for me. But, my impression is that the USB port is only for charging, and possibly for configuration from a computer. Data is only via Bluetooth. You make the BT MIDI connection with the BT control in an app like AUM. In AUM, it's in settings, or on the header of the MIDI routing matrix. Good luck sorting out your system.

  • The Zoia shines in this capacity.
Not a cheap solution, but a fine and very flexible one.

  • Oh man, I hope it's just a temporary fluke @SkillipEvolver. I've had such things once or twice in the past. Never a lick of problems with the Chocolate.

You might try turning off the iPad and letting it sit for some time. I think that got my wife's iPad out of a similar state a few times. Another, I had to set it into recovery mode then hook up to my MacBook.

  • @uncledave - the USB connection can be used for Data with iPad or iPhone as well. It appears as SINCO, which is confusing, but it does work. And yes, you have to connect via USB to use the CubeSuite software on desktop, it doesn't work over BLE Midi.

The USB port transmits the midi data and isn’t just for charging. I use the chocolate wired when I need minimal latency. I use a USB-C to A adapter as my hub isn’t USB-C

  • Ok. Yeah.. I mean... I'm currently just lost for words, though I appreciate any contact on this.

It's very gutting to spend around £50 (expr. pedal + Chocolate), only for that gadget to seemingly cook the iPad.

    It's really angers me.
There is only 1 thing I can think of which is different in this scenario, compared to times in the past:

in the past, I can say that every gadget I've tried to use (usb-wise), has been minimal (electrically).
ie passive. (The AKAI MK III, my OrcaPad (48pad gadget, M-Audio 69key).

The only thing I can think of, which I didn't do from the outset, is charge the Choc fully before first use.
But I still don't believe that should cook an iPad. 👎🏻

-----it just seems highly suspicious, that iPad port only stopped working after trying direct connect from Choc to iPad... 🤔 (that and the fact that MidiWrench was reading random blip midi messages every few seconds).

-has anyone ever heard of lithium batt-based products buggering things up like this?

-at the very least, the random midi messages are a bit sus, right?

  • I'm gonna take my iPad to a fixer today..

I realise my last message was a bit long, and full of frustration more than anything else
. So thought I'd reach out again.

In short, directly connecting gadget to iPad's USBc port seems to have damaged the iPad port ❌

--The Chocolate has a lithium battery induced:
has anyone ever heard of lithium batt-based products buggering things up like this?

--when connected simply by BT and opening MidiWrench, it was firing occasional messages without any interaction.. this seems malfunctional to me... Would you agree?

    Hi all,

    Got my chocolate through today.

    Just checking it connects ok...

I connected it to my hub.
(which is connected to the iPad with usb-c).
(It was mentioned that this can be connected to iPad via cable, forgoing Bluetooth).

Bluetooth light on Chocolate blinks... (it's putting out signal)
Opened up midi monitor, noticed that it's occasionally sending messages (without touching it)...

I thought this was odd, so I then made sure the Bluetooth was connected. (Settings on iPad, connect etc).

I noticed in MidiWrench, that it shows up under the name of SINCO when cabled, and FootCtrl when connected via Bluetooth.

I found that odd, but not a problem as such..
    Is this normal?

I was keen to get rid of these random messages coming in.

--however, even when connected to the hub
(USB-C from Chocolate, into USB-c port on hub), AND connected to iPad via Bluetooth... Tthe messages remained.

I didn't know at this point whether it was a real problem..

So next, I tried connecting from Chocolate gadget, directly to iPad
(USB-c from gadget into USB-c port on iPad).

---nothing. Failed to pick it up. (Aggravating at this point).

To cap it all off, I wanted to check my USB-c port on the iPad... So I plugged in the standard apple charger from mains sources.. and just like shit all magic.. iPad no longer charges...

I hate to say it at this point...
But I am extremely suspicious (and quite suddenly pissed off) that this Chinese gadget has buggered the iPad USB-c charging/function 😳

I powered the ipad off and on, no change,
tried a different plug socket, no change,
the charger charges my phone no problem.
I highly suspect the problem is now the iPad 🤦🏻

No wonder apple never confidently promote musicianship with these things.. 😩

I can no longer even use my hub.. which funny enough means I can no longer use my M-AUDIO keyboard.. this day just turned to s**t. 👎🏻👎🏻

Christ sake, who would even think.. that plugging a USB-c gadget into an iPad could damage the iPad... 😡

Video from the moment before the iPad no longer accepted anything USB-c ... 😳

Oh damn, that frigging sucks. Maybe @uncledave has a suggestion.

  • @SkillipEvolver : sending sporadic messages sounds like a possibly defective pedal.

Was your expression pedal connected when you were getting the sporadic messages?

If so. were the messages the the ones tied to the expression pedal?

Did you run CubeSuite to configure the pedal to see if that resolved the sporadic messages?

After configuring the pedal, I’d check to see if the behavior changed. If you still get sporadic messages, I’d return the pedal as defective.

  • I ordered the Audiofront MIDI Expression, the one with just one port. It took three weeks and cost me an arm and a leg with shipping and customs fees it got way over BUT the M-Audio Exp pedal is very cheap and now that all is working ... it's worth it.
The sensitivity and all work great and I'm super pleased. Finally I'm being able to wah-wah with my guitar, so fun.

There was another one recommended, from Amazon, that were a lot cheaper (can't find the post after a quick glance). I read the reviews on Amazon and ran..

  • Good to hear. .... I'm still in fix-up world of pain since the Chocolate decided to futz my iPads USBc port... ,😕

    Soooo frustrating

Is this the same iPad you've been having USB and charging issues with since Feb 2023 and have had repaired by a third party unsuccessfully, with a macbook charging IC?

  • Well... Only partly true...
1st attempt fix, they used a MacBook salvaged usb-c module. Didn't work.

Second attempt they used one from 'another macbook', which worked ok.

It lasted for about 13 months ...
Quite annoying that they offered 1yr warranty and this only happened 6 weeks after that period lapsed :-(

they also made an spoon of the re-assembly, losing a good amount of touchscreen sensitivity in the process (finger). And using the pen was almost a non-starter...

however, I'm told that it may have been put back together without enough care and attention (well duh....)...

But we'll see...... I'm not gonna believe it til I see it sorted.
