I suppose this means Dub Station won’t come to iOS (although you say it was completed). Very sad about this, because it was the one plugin I was really waiting for. No way to “rebrand” it like you have done for this dub filter and release it anyway?

Technically, we have the expansive equivalent on iOS with Springs, Outer Space and Dubfilter!

  • @audiothing Now I need to pull out my Ernest Ranglin LPs after that demo!

But…as people are saying that DubFilter is not the same as other filters (it has its own character, it’s the port of Tubby’s Big Knob,…), same is valid for Outer Space not being the MCI 2 on which Echowuk is based and Springs not being the Fairchild on which Spring Bling is based…😏

You either want the full Whaterhouse experience or not…😂

Otherwise I wouldn’t even need Audiothing: I’m full of delays, springverbs and filters (maybe even too many ☺️)

Speakers is very slept on, it can be used as a customizable filter with different saturation and noise options, and mic/speaker emulations to change the timbre of the filter itself. It lacks an LFO but you can map values to the LFO of a host.

Maybe you're misunderstanding, but Dubfilter is the filter that was in Dubstation, improved upon.
And Outer Space, Springs and Dubfilter would be expanded equivalents to Dubstation's stripped down versions.

I’m not misunderstanding (and I own Dub Station).
What I was saying is that while DubFilter IS the filter that was in Dub Station (reproduced from King Tubby’s Big Knob), Outer Space and Springs are NOT the equivalents of what was in Dub Station (reproductions of the MCI 2 for Echowuk and the Fairchild Sprin Reverb for Spring Bling, both also devices from the King Tubby’s studios in Waterhouse, which originals are now in Alborosie collection of vintage devices, since he bought them).

Outer Space is a reproduction of Roland Space Echo RE-201 and Springs contains a lot of emulations, but not the Fairchild Spring Reverb.

Not to add that King Tubby even modified the 3 vintage devices himself, therefore even other devices from the same line are not sounding exactly as the ones he owned

  • Correct, the echo and spring sections of Dub Station are different from Outer Space and Springs. You can get close (the Spacexpander model for example), and achieve that dub sound, but we'll not be able to include the modified Fairchild in Springs.

That sounds quite ridiculous, given how many free spring reverb and filter IRs are floating around.
    Well, lawyers...

  • @audiothing Ya man. Thank you guys for this. AT and a few other developers are the reason I still mess with my iPad. You folks make making music or experimenting on an iPad super fun. I love the heck outta the whole catalog.

    Thank you for confirming
What about my original question? Is there a possibility?

    @audiothing said:

On desktop we decided to give it away for free to previous Dub Station users, so it's going to take more time than usual to recover costs. We don't like to discontinue products, but unfortunately, we had to end the agreement for that plugin, and offering Dub Filter for free felt like the right thing to do.

I would also like to thank you for this very honest move. Unluckily, already owning Dub Station, it means I also already own this Dub filter. I suppose we must be happy anyway, since this new version is a little bit expanded.
But…I was guessing…since we already have the previous version on desktop…is there any chance we could have the iOS version instead? Or at least some kind of discount? It could be even better for you, since instead of giving away a 59$ plugin you would give a 10$ one. And it could be a way to show some desktop users the possibilities of iOS music making and leading them to be interested in your other iOS plugins, instead of giving them a duplicate of what they already have.
A no as an answer could be understandable, but don’t think it’s not possible because of how the AppStore works. Other developers can do it, so there is a way

Let me clarify, I meant THAT modified Fairchild reverb. If we can find another Fairchild spring reverb, we can include it in Springs of course, but it won't be King Tubby's modified reverb.

Sorry, forgot to reply. App Store purchases are completely separate from our store. Apple doesn't provide any way to link external purchases. It's also not possible to offer any targeted or personal discount on the App Store (afaik). They only allow 100 codes per version to give the app away for free (usually for reviews, beta testing, etc...), definitely not enough to offer Dub Filter in the same way as we do on Desktop.

I get receipts for app purchases, couldn't those or screenshots be sent to a dedicated AT address and maybe OCR bot putting the data into a "elegible for discount" database? The effort to fake those would also be hight for the amount of money that could be saved, making fakes kinda nonsensical.

I already own most AT apps including DubFilter, was just trying to help. First person was just used as an example..

While it may be impossible to verify those claims, even if we choose to trust the users, this approach would significantly increase customer support costs anyway. Moreover, and to be fair, it would mean pricing the iOS apps the same as the desktop versions.

It'll also be impossible to go the other way around, as we cannot offer more than 100 free copies per version.

So, the only real option would be to offer a universal product on the App Store that can be installed on both macOS and iOS. This means an overall increase for both iOS and macOS users, as iOS users are going to pay desktop prices, and we also have to account for Apple's share (which is higher than our current payment processor).

Thanks for your suggestion, but we receive messages like this all the time. We spent several months preparing for the iOS market, carefully evaluating all possible scenarios in terms of distribution and pricing. Right now, our model seems to be the best compromise for us.

Wouldn't this work for discounts of desktop versions for owners of the same iOS versions? I mean users will still pay a substantial amount of the desktop price and iOS users would become part of your main sales funnel and email list.

I'd be surprised if there isn't a way to automate the process after users submit a web form.

The iOS prices are more than fair, but if the iOS prices could be deducted from the desktop versions of the same plugins I'd get some of those too.

  • @kirmesteggno AudioThing plugins are very fairly priced and affordable with regular sales both on desktop and iOS. I don't think they need to divert time to creating a cross platform discount scheme. in my opinion.

A solution could be just a plugin install away in Shopify or Woocommerce. But yeah don't listen to a webdev.

Yeah, I’m glad they do what they do and I’m sure they don’t need to increase their workload for less income.

And then it would not be fair if you buy the desktop version first and expect a discount on/free version of the iOS app.

Also, the time spent on developing and maintaining such a system is significant...

I'd love to get my hands on one of these! They are becoming really expensive. There's a "remake" made by Soundgas that sounds promising, but not sure. We'll see ;)

  • It’s just awesome that there are such developers on iOS as audiothing, tal and fabfilter. The trend is quite clear and in the future everyone will be here, but I appreciate what we have now

Good point, but people who buy desktop plugins might be more tolerant to spending extra, just a guess tho.

Honestly, building your own spring reverb is no rocket science and a fun project keeping you away from the screen.
You get a wide choice of springs with different lengths and diameters on ebay and mixing them in different combinations, including stringing up different lengths and diameters into one, then playing with actuators and pickups will give you a variety of spring reverb sounds that will put the spring reverb police to shame.
Oh and while you're at it, consider building an oil can delay too 😃
