This probably isn't considered real prog, and not particularly rock, but I really recommend watching La Planète Sauvage, a trippy French animated science fiction movie from 1973.

    The whole movie:

    The soundtrack:

Somehow I had seen that movie as a little kid and then experienced recurring nightmares about it for most of my life until I finally asked people about it online. They confirmed it was a real movie which existed around the time period I described. And then I re-watched it online and that helped to surface and finally end my recurring nightmares. I know that sounds strange, but it's a true story. Absolutely not a movie for kids.

You won't believe this mate, but this happened to me too, except with "Eraserhead". I used to have nightmares about a "screaming monster baby" all the time.

Then in my 20s, I Googled "screaming monster baby movie", and when I saw the image of...whatever the fuck that thing was (in the movie it was a deformed baby), my heart sank into my gut and my jaw dropped. I found the source of my nightmares, watched the movie, and haven't had a nightmare about it since.

I have a feeling our own experiences are more common than we might think! Things which may seem mundane or funny to others as adults may leave a lifelong impression on a kid.

Exactly! But strange as it is, I quite thoroughly enjoyed "Eraserhead" the second time I saw it (first time as an adult). I like the strange and bizarre. 😃

I saw Eraserhead as a teenager with a college student crowd and that still gave me nightmares, but Lynch became one of my favorite directors.

  • You also asked for some Synthwave. So here’s a couple. I already told you about Gunship.

Kavinsky - Nightcall in the movie Drive was a lot of people introduction to synthwave.

Kristine was one of my early favorite.

Dance with the dead adds metal guitar to synthwave. Their synthwave as a strong EDM flavor.

Carpenter Brut is one of the original. Amazing video. Warning : The video maybe too much for some.

Last one! Deadlife just because I love this song. It is so original. I have never heard a song that starts slow and just keep picking up speed as goes.

  • I'll be definitely checking all these out. I just downloaded iM1 on my iPhone. 🥹 I'm a happy boy. I can wait for the others, but Darwin was the only thing I missed from iPad Gadget.

I realised I could use Gadget as it can vary time signatures and BPMs per scene. I also have the Gadget ecosystem all on my iPad Mini. Okay, that should solve that then.

Woah, had no idea! Hmmmmm.... ...

I just wish I could do the sideload thing of iM1 and other iPad-only apps to iPhone Gadget, but ever since version 3 I've been unable to. However, I am certainly not lacking of sounds in Gadget, and I still have 100gb of 256 left on my Mini 6.

    I...just don't want to use NS2. 😂

    Great news, iM1 is now AUv3 👍

Definitely not Space Rock, Prog Rock or Heavy Metal.
    Quintessential Classic Rock though. 😎

Embalmed Ringo creeps me out a little in this vid, but love the jam.

Exactly! I didn't think he was Prog when I was listening, but I dug the music anyways.

Okay this is a nice summary of Prog Rock. Maybe a bit too generalised, but succinctly gets straight to the basics.

Anyways, when I'm ready to make my first song or album, I think I'm going to notate some melodic riffs and motifs and chord progressions, write a short story, and either make one very long song or an album. 😉 I'm currently writing notes and journaling on my ReMarkable 2 tablet.

What I have so far - the premise of the overarching story is about a zealous woman who holds bigoted beliefs but is guilty of her own "sins". It could also serve as a broader criticism of certain topics in general. I don't have a fleshed out plot nor short story just yet. I'll work on those tomorrow when I'm awake.

I do know either one of the songs, or the album name, or both one song and whole album will be titled "Sister Mary", given the name Mary is often associated with the subject/one of the subjects I'll be criticizing.

I may also use some of George Carlin's routines as inspo for some of the lyrics. Now there's a philosopher who could stitch together words like a true poet who also so happened to have a sense of humour.

Of course I'll resort to vocoded vocals, but that doesn't mean I'll always use a sawtooth as the carrier for the vocals if at all. 😏 The spirit of Prog as far as I've grokked it to this point is all about experimenting and doing things in a non-traditional fashion.

Maybe once this song and/or album is complete and I get a good feel for creating Prog, I may reach out here to the forum for collaborators on the next project. :) But first album will be all from me.

With that said, later this week I'll start creating everything on my iPhone in Gadget (now that I have Darwin on my iPhone and the fact Gadget can do seperate bpms and time sigs per scene). And I will master it all in Logic Pro on iPad.

If I get really stellar at creating Prog and writing fake guitar riffs, and once my OP-1 Field is paid in full, I swear I'll buy a decent midrange guitar and take lessons. 😉

I kind of associate that with a different era, but there were still some prog-like bands during the 90s, particularly indie bands - Muse, Radiohead, Supergrass, etc. all recorded long, meandering songs with extended instrumental breaks.

Porcupine tree, Opeth and Spock's beard all did great work in the 90s.

  • Gnidrolog… short lived but different.
Focus.. Hocus Pocus has to be one of the greatest singles of all time… Akkerman is such an amazing guitarist.

  • Since you also mentioned Synthwave in your opening post @jwmmakerofmusic here some of my favority Coldwave (sits somewhere in between prog rock and synthwave) discoveries of the last years:

  • Thank you all again so much! So here's what I got so far on "Sister Mary".

    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/lrf7dg3wog0ya4sa586bo/Peculiar-Web-2-converted.m4a?rlkey=js9rqs9nf4bnwmsiptu2c76ei&dl=0

Note, this is just a "piano & drums" sketch for now. The first 8 bars is an instrumental, no inst solos nor vocals. The next 8 bars is either a verse or chorus (represented by the melody piano). Then.....chaos! Instrument solo. Keys keep switching. Imperfect chords.

Once the piano sketch is complete (it's not even near being complete), then it's onto fleshing out the instrumental. The song needs an intro for starters, and then more at the beginning. Right now this snippet nugget is basically somewhere in the middle of the song. 😂 What comes after Idk yet.

If I'm making EDM, I usually skip the piano sketch stage. I do make piano sketches for more complex music to capture the vibe first rather than worry about what instruments go where. Don't put the cart before the horse.

Hope you enjoy this. It was 100% made in Gadget on iPhone.

  • Sounds like a great start. You have a lot packed in there in less than 2 minutes! I like the change up to what I call the galloping section.

  • Big inspirations on me - some synthwave, and the spacey rock is more neo than classic;

Me too. :) That galloping section will probably be the climax of the song to be honest. I can't believe Gadget, once again, proves to be the "forgotten gem" I needed to structure out this song with simple piano and drums.

I think I'll keep the drums as they're good and punchy enough. The pianos I may not keep except for reference and copying notes from the melody to either a guitar, a solo instrument(s), and/or a carrier that will be rendered separately so to vocode my vocals.

Yes, I plan to vocode my vocals except for some speaking parts. My singing voice is out of practice, and quite frankly I can't be arsed breaking the rules of my flat (which one of the rules specifically states "no singing", lol). And I sure af consider it a sin to autotune my vocals for a Rock song, no matter what genre of Rock it is. (Sheesh, for as much flack as Nickelback gets, I don't recall them ever using autotune. Then again it's been a long, long time since I last listened to them for a couple of laughs.)

I'm not sure I'll reach beyond 6-7 minutes with this particular song, but that's okay. I'm producing a new style I've never done before, and I'm sure I'll create longer songs after this one.

Not sure if this will be the "Sister Mary" song either to be honest. I want that song to be more conceptual and longer. This first Prog song of mine is more about experimenting with different time signatures and tempos. Might even spark a collaboration or two. :)

Although many classic Prog songs are often quite long, Prog tracks don’t need to be. There are even some that last only a few seconds!
Either do they always need vocals. The important thing is to enjoy what you are doing.

If you need any real guitar adding, I would be happy to give it a go, once you have finished or got a bit further. 😉
