Who here has never has an actual computer or a laptop? Only iPad ?
Am I the only one here who’s never owned a desktop or laptop of any kind? I’ve got a 256 gig M1 iPad Pro and an iPhone but I have 71 yr old eyes and even w reading glasses would never do music on my phone, unless it was perhaps GarageBand.
Comments
I used to own laptops to use FL Studio on. I went 7-8 years without a laptop or desktop of any kind. I'm strictly iOS.
That said, I recently bought a nice cheap Windows laptop simply to access files on my OP-1 Field and nothing more than that. I tried FL Studio on there and froze up. I like my multi-app workflow on iPhone. iPad as well, but my iPhone has more storage space. Wish my Mini had at least a 512gb option.
I haven’t had a laptop in over 10 years. I think I’m going to continue what I’m doing:
I started on an iPad, then got an iPhone. I use the outdated iPad as a controller for finger drumming the Phone. Phone is SE2, soon to be replaced, probably with an iPad, or maybe instead, a newer base model phone free upgrade type deal and use the money towards an SP404mk2 instead.
@HotStrange has a 404 himself. He loves it a lot. So perhaps a newer base model phone and a new iPad and get the 404 through zZounds.
Cool. We’ll see. It seems I’m one of few people who don’t mind tapping on glass though. I’m somehow more accurate with my iPad to phone through a BT connection than hardwired with my Launchpad X pads. I think it’s cause I’m not a heavy hitter. I get note repeats/retriggers with pads. Well, at least Launchpad. Never owned an MPC or SP. But I do enjoy the workflow of hosting Koala inside Drambo.
I don’t use or want a DAW. So it IF I were to get hardware, SP seems more conducive, from what I’ve read, to a live performance tool, rather than MPC, which seems more studio orientated. Am I wrong at @HotStrange?
Been iOS-only for years, ever since I started making music. Actually the iPad started it all.
I haven’t used a desk- or laptop until a few weeks ago to test stuff. It’s driving me crazy having to find a flat surface and use a mouse, not happy at all. Back to the couch and my iPad as soon as possible..
🤪

Not at all! The 404 is much more like an instrument. The MPC is more of a DAW-in-a-box and since I already have an iPad I ended up simply never using the MPC I had. It’s like the iPad but even more clunky and annoying 😂
The SP has a sense and feeling of discovery and fun like a new instrument does and I love that about it. And it sends and receives audio AND midi over a single usb-c cable which just makes things so much easier. It’s a blast and I truly cannot recommend it enough
I think the sexiest thing about your picture is, just one cable. I forgot those run on batteries. I knew about the audio, but I’m just learning it’s pretty capable of handling midi both ways.
So when you interface it that way, I’m guessing you plug your headphones into the 404 to hear whatever your iPad is doing?
Thanks for sharing @HotStrange , and thanks for letting me hang out on your front stoop, @Telstar5 . I’ll clean up the beer cans before I leave.
Interesting! I wager you may be the only one on this forum. (PS. I am 49 and never had a drivers license but I have owned three cars.)
Never recorded on a lap or desk top. iOS only.
i bought M1 Mac Mini to run Drambo on desktop
There was a time starting 2016 I tried to not own a computer and just an iPad. It didn’t work out.
Although I have an great pretty new 16” Macbook Pro, my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro is my primary device to almost everything.
In the same time, if I wanna get stucked I have an dedicated 25” external screen 4K that I connect to my iPad thru a USB-C cable.
Then I got some desktop experience, can use mouse & keyboard on the iPad, and, thru Stage Manager I got real fullscreen picture on the external screen…
If I had to choose between my $3500 Macbook Pro and my iPad Pro M1, I would choose the iPad all days in the week! Such an incredible device!!
Yes. I ditched the desktop and laptop a few years ago. Everything I needed those for can be done with my iPad instead these days 👍
Drambos sequencer doesn't work though, AU's/AUv3's can't send midi on desktop. Another blow is that Drambo desktop can't use the iCloud documents folder if you have enabled it in your iCloud settings (you can deactivate it whithout problems though).
Most older people I know hate touch and prefer the desktop, could be a German thing because having a home computer was quite common for most people.
for those who never tried using a laptop or desktop i highly recommend them.
Today's best irony!
Are there really people out there never used a desktop/laptop computer?
Maybe in the deep forest somewhere I South America or perhaps some part of Africa...
I’ve owned tons of PCs. I actually hate macs in terms of useability and what you can do, and just the whole ui.
But I love iOS and I ditched all desktops or laptops and just use my iPad. For like fifteen years now
I think we've all used a desktop and/or a laptop at least once in our lives, mate. 😂 In my case, why do you think I ditched using that environment for creating music?
And in my case, all I was able to afford regarding mobile music creation were Windows laptops. That meant having to subscribe to an anti-virus software and anti-malware software. That also meant having to meander through various methods of license keys and unlocking plugins and shit. (With FL Studio and other Image-Line software being the most user-friendly to unlock since they didn't ask to repurchase your plugins after activating them on five devices.)
That meant having to use mostly subpar free plugins (although there were a few decent gems in the rough) since the paid ones were pricier than on iOS. (Less than $200 for the FabFilter Bundle on iOS which costs about $900 on Desktop/Laptop.)
So yes, Danny, I also highly recommend using a laptop or desktop if you also want to deal with the headaches that come along with using the environment and/or have deep pockets to afford all the top-end plugins you can get on iOS for a fraction of the cost.
The question was if you have never owned one.
Ok 👍
Because you're using a PC for work and want a different feeling for your free time hobby?
That's the thing though, laptops are almost as portable as iPads these days and they can feel like hardware if the DAW takes advantage of the computer keyboard as midi controller and to control stuff inside the DAW. Ableton is quite good in this regard and is more comfortable to use than a DAW in a box like modern MPCs imo.
But many can't make the switch from work to hobby and simply won't open the laptop lid until the next work day.
Same could be the case for younger folks who grew up on phones and touch. They may seek a "professional" environment like a desktop operating system and DAW or hardware instead. Because it's quite crazy that the're so few music producers on iOS considering the amounts of iPhones owned by especially young people.
@Telstar5 , you should take your question and pitch it to Steve Harvey as the premises for one of his show segments. This material would be ripe for his style of subversive insults. Maybe you can go on to score another multi-million viewed video 😉
My favorite part was Steve’s response to your particular instruction regarding picking a rapper for you to impersonate.
Telestar5: …but it’s gotta be someone who looks like I can’t do.
Steve Harvey: Clearly, you don’t look like you can do any of them!
I have an iPad and a Surface Pro. I'm never going back to laptops/desktops.
Sorry mate, but music isn't my hobby. Creating digital paintings is my hobby.
Ableton is pretty baller I will admit.
The iPad and iPhone are professional environments too when used by professional musicians. "It's not the tools you use but rather how you use them". (I know @michael_m "That's what she said." 😜 )
This is the same old strawman argument that used to be used against FL Studio main back in the 00s. "It's not a real DAW." "You're using a toy to create music instead of Cubase/Protools?" And other such rubbish.
I've went through many laptops, including all the headaches and expenses that came with such environments.
And strange how there are so few music producers on laptops and desktops considering most everyone under the age of 80 owns a computer of some sort.
Just because iOS is more accessible and music plugins are more cost-effective on iOS doesn't mean it's not professional. 😉 Cheers.
The idea of using a computer keyboard as a midi controller is hideous haha I can’t think of anything less musical with less expression. It would be a really amateur setup. But I guess if all you’re doing is triggering loops
Laptops are t as portable. They depending on what is you’re on take much more maintenance. I find windows unusable now, I do have a cloud vm but if I leave it a few weeks it takes forever needing to restart installing security. It’s ridiculous how patchy the os is to need so much - you really realise it if you take longish breaks.
I’m a writer. Laptops don’t give me any option for which keyboard I use or distance from the screen or arrangement. I don’t think I could ever go back to that restriction
iPad has daw much cheaper soft synths now a really expansive set of modelled and sampled orchestral and acoustic instruments. I’d be stepping down in terms of professional quality to a more amateur setup on desktop or laptop. If you aren’t absolutely loaded you have a better pro setup on iPad as you can buy an awful lot more. How much is swam desktop…
Also the touch screen is an incredible MPE device. It saved me probably around a grand. And I use the pencil a lot for drawing animation
It’s just an amazing device for me really natural and all in one.
I love being able to write and plan in scrivener, organise index cards elsewhere, switch to sketch something or paint a design in procreate, check the net for research, edit a music video in Davinci and then back to logic or playing around with instruments and velocity keyboard
This isn’t even mentioning watching films on a nice uncluttered screen, reading comics, books on a smaller iPad… i was reading war and peace in book form earlier this year and had to switch to iPad as its just so physically unwieldy.
Respect for using mostly an iPhone to earn your bread with music!
People like change from ordinary things though, it's about maximizing fun for most (hobby musicians) and not productivity. What I wanted to say is that the business laptop escapism for one person could be the smartphone escapism for another one.
MacBooks/MacOS is a different beast for music than Windows laptops. You can use any non professionial soundcard including onboard sound and get "professional" (🤣) ASIO like playback performance.
Because it's complicated for non techy people to get started. Even FL Studio is a giant clusterfuck if you have never used a DAW (just saying, not fronting you as an ex FL user). Compare this with iPhone apps..
Dude, don't get triggered by this professional/hobby stuff! Independent of how you or me think about it, other folks may see hardware or desktops as more professional because it's used my most professionals. Search for any [genre] [tutorial] and all you see are desktop DAW tutorials!
Honestly I thought folks here were over this iOS = toy inferiority complex.
I agree with everything you wrote.
One thing though, I don't need key velocity if I will experiment and randomize it inside the DAW anyway. For me the magic keyboard is more enjoying to press down on than those stiff MPD pads on midi controllers. Some MacBooks like those produced from 2016 - 2019 are shit though.
I still have an Akai MPD, APC and Korg Padkontrol packed up and just use the computer keyboard instead.
Now this is a Huh? moment for me. Driving is fun. I don't get it. I wish I still had nice cars but even with what I have, I still like driving. How can you have cars but not want to drive them?
He never said anything about not driving them. How has he managed not to get caught? Or maybe he didn’t drive them after all? Car for the spouse? Children?
Heh, driving where I live is horrible. I don't even like being a passenger. It stresses me out. If I was still in the town where I grew up I would probably have got my license though, mainly because the closest city with decent music stores was over four hours away. Where I am now it is much better to just hop on the train and get places with less stress. Even better still is to work from home and not even have to do that which is what I do now, plus walking.
Yes, the Mrs has a license and used to drive... want to buy a car with a tank likely full of jelly? Its been sitting in the parkade for years now.
