There are some nice features on the AstroLab. The knobs are endless encoders with high-resolution light rings around each knob. As you change from 1 patch to another, the light rings reflect all of the settings for each patch. This is a huge step up from what I get with every MIDI keyboard controller that I have tried.

That's where KK MK3 comes in. It supports MIDI 2.0. The encoders are virtual knobs, with labels and values displayed on the screen. Obviously, that requires software support, but their software does that, and more should be coming.

Korg Keystage has some nice features and I agree that MIDI 2.0 will be a big part of the solution. However Keystage has pots, not encoders (I am not familiar with virtual knobs). Keystage also has no lights around each knob so you will have to turn and "latch" each parameter whenever you change patches.
The Astrolab should have a small display screen beneath each encoder like the Keystage has (especially at that price point).

Sorry. I used the expression "virtual knobs" for the MK3 endless encoders just to indicate that they are automatically reconfigured by the software to perform multiple functions.

  • I really like that multifunction screen on the knob. Imagine having a row of those as part of an editing interface for a full HW version Pigments! — Multi-touch capable for assigning modulation. (drools)

Now THAT would have been worth the price. . A rompler, not so much for me.
It is impressive that all these sophisticated synth engines are running so well in HW though, but I’m still holding out hope for a product with full on board multi-engine editing. Waldorf needs some competition :)

  • You can get KK MK2 for around 250€. Thrown in a micro PC without a screen for a few hundred more. Set KK software to Autostart and you got yourself super affordable alternative to astrolab. Just boots up a bit longer.
